You bolt wake in the Casa do Infante, Porto. It is 1417. You are Prince Henry the Navigator, and you have changed your mind. The future cannot come to pass. Your ships must not sail south, Europe must never find the Spice Isles.

i love when they recover some 3000 year old clay tablet and its something totally relatable like “i hope this tablet finds you well but the group project is a disaster…”

Today is July 25th, often celebrated as the fall of Italian fascism. Mussolini passed draconian controls over pasta production which he considered decadent and overly reliant on foreign grain. Today, we celebrate his fall with a simple, defiant partisan dish: 1) Pasta 2) Creamy butter 3) Parmesan

And if 'Nae Pasaran' means nothing to you, google it; amazing documentary about an amazing and very relevant story.

I had no idea about this, thanks for the history lesson, and coincidentally I just cooked home-made tagliatelle with a creamy sauce this evening. Nae Paseran.

“The stadium roars. Shakira's hips defy the indifferent void, a hypnotic pendulum against chaos. Confetti falls like ash from a dying star. I think of the jaguar, watching from the jungle, uncomprehending, and I envy it. This is ecstasy. This is despair. This is halftime.”

I didn't think this was controversial but a basic need of everyone living in NZ is, in fact, to be aware of natural hazards around you and have plans for your household or workplace in the event that there is an emergency and comms don't work. Don't expect to be able to load the website after AF8.

The last bit is actually how we locate each other when lost.

Seconded! If you hear the word "overdue" used for an earthquake, volcano, etc., you're almost certainly NOT talking to a geoscientist. In fact, if you say "overdue" too loudly, a geologist will pop out of the nearest trash can like Oscar The Grouch to tell you all about why we don't use that word.

Been checking out the Bismarck Sea eruption during night shift. Some lovely imagery from the 12th/13th - cloud interfering on more recent images. With and without use of chlorophyll L2 filter:

Can't prove this but maybe the reason for Attenborough's longevity is that whenever Paddington arrives to shepherd his soul on, he fends him off with his powers of nature narration. "The perplexed ursine psychopomp withdraws, his hunt unsuccessful. Perhaps a 1970s bass player will make easier prey."

🔭 A cautionary tale for undergrads (and above!) using AI for #astro plots: our BSc student wanted to make a "quick" HR diagram showcasing M-dwarfs & thought some chatbot could make one and... well... ...extra credits are now offered to students who can correctly find all errors on cursedHR.png 🫠 🧪

Hey hive mind, I almost never do this but maybe someone can help... a few months ago, someone posted a set photo from the 'Alien' franchise I think, showing the gravity on/off switch - think it was stick figures right way up/upside down. Google-fu is weak and now I can't find it! Help? Thanks!

Since early-March there has been an interesting sequence of larger earthquakes happening about halfway between Raoul Island and the North Island of New Zealand. They went on for a couple weeks in March, quieted down for a couple weeks, and then picked up again in early-April. 🧪

It's Trans Day of Visibility, but a shout out to the invisible trans people - the ones who haven't realised, the ones who haven't shared it, and, sadly, the ones for whom it's just too dangerous to be yourself in public. I might not see you, but I know you're out there.

Let me just make a few little adjustments to that title… “How a scientist with a PhD in Geology and 25 years of experience is helping lead California’s earthquake work” Way to devalue my experience.
