My friend and colleague @justincchang.bsky.social and I teamed up on a newsletter roundup of new releases; I have special enthusiasm for one film in the batch, Eleanor Coppola's absorbing and moving documentary Making Marie Antoinette: links.newyorker.com/e/evib?_t=9a...

One of my favorite movie memories is walking past the Cinerama and noting that Skerrit was sitting for a Q&A on a screening of Alien that day. Bought a ticket on the spot, it was the best (both his stories and watching it on a huge screen).
I believe Skerritt hosted the first private fundraiser in Seattle for then-presidential candidate Barack Obama in his home, along with a couple of book launch parties for local authors. I saw him out at arts events pretty frequently around town. He made Seattle better by being a good neighbor.

Fascinating that as even as other Republicans who long ago sold their souls to MAGA still have enough baseline political acumen to see how poisonous this is, Vance is completely oblivious. It isn't just that he has no principles, decency, or moral compass, he's also really fucking bad at politics.

In 2017, I wrote about my obsessesion with nun cinema for Cléo: A Feminist Film Journal (RIP). With the re-release of The Devils, I thought it was an appropriate time to reshare the essay, which includes many observations on Ken Russell’s masterpiece. cleojournal.com/2017/04/21/w...

I got extremely nerdy with Michael Chaiken, producer of Criterion's amazing new Complete Kubrick set! We talked about restoring Kubrick's shorts, the one shot in Eyes Wide Shut that still drove its DP crazy, and much more: www.avclub.com/the-complete...

montana’s western house seat went for trump by more than 11 points, and in tuesday’s debate democrat sam forstag answered the trans question without arguing about bodies or conceding that trans girls are “boys.” he argued about who decides, then talked about money. i wrote about why it works:

Crazy idea: Democrats should defend immigration and immigrants, run on the idea that immigrants make America great, and stop Homer Simpsoning themselves into the shrubbery every time Republicans try to demagogue it.
New Marist poll of Texas finds 61% say undocumented immigrants should stay in US if meet certain requirements. Only 35% say they should leave. A majority of noncollege white men (Trump base) says stay. Supports my case (see piece/thread below) that Trump opened way for new pro-immigrant consensus

“In a world where ... what queer culture is allowed to exist [is] confined to homonormative models ... watching a Bruce LaBruce film feels like a splash of water to the face." @clintworthing.bsky.social recaps his time at the weekend-long Bruce LaBruce retrospective:

Montana Dem Sam Forstag just refused to throw trans people under the bus in the MT-01 debate: “Keep politics the heck out of it.” He said government has no business in sports or telling parents what to do. It’s the most competitive House race in the country. Subscribe to support our journalism.
