For several days I have been hearing rumors of an ICE detainee death that ICE was not reporting. I've just learned a local journalist has confirmed it and will publish soon. Now I read this and see there are actually TWO deaths ICE is not reporting. www.daylightsandiego.org/ice-detainee...

Tragic news: Curtis Flowers, who faced an extraordinarily ordeal by being prosecuted six times for the same crime by a Mississippi DA over decades before SCOTUS sided with him in 2019, just died at 56. Flowers' case was core to the 'In the Dark' podcast.

The rise of 287(g) programs has meant that ICE is increasingly using local police as a very significant force multiplier, with up to 1 in 8 arrests of noncitizens in the interior now being carried out by state and local police. This is going to have profound impacts on community relations.

Guardian US@us.theguardian.com

But an increasing proportion of arrests have been made by local law enforcement in partnership with ICE, via 287(g) agreements. In many regions, it can be difficult to know when local officers are conducting routine policework or immigration enforcement. In many cases, they are doing both.

The entire Bee opinion staff was let go today. I’m sad for my friends and former colleagues. Robin is a fearless and dedicated journalist who gives a shit. She is well-sourced and speaks her truth. Sacramento is better because of her work. These layoffs are a major blow to journalism in California.

Robin Epley@byrobinepley.bsky.social

Sunday would have been my 5 year anniversary at The Bee. Today I was informed I am part of the massive layoffs happening at McClatchy. I’m Sacramento born and raised, and it’s been an honor to serve my community. I don’t know what’s next, but I know I’ll be ok.

Python coders use Jupyter to get more stupider. R coders use Quarto to get more smarto. JavaScript coders use Observable to get more adorable. Can't argue with it if it rhymes!

GettingOut, the horribly-named messaging tool used by many prisons, jails, and detention facilities to allow incarcerated people to communicate with friends and loved ones, has easily the worst user interface I've ever seen (with the exception of its competitor, CorrLinks).

Until recently, you couldn't even include paragraphs in your messages, but the latest update now sends paragraphs as un-rendered HTML, meaning you get stuff like "<p>Hello,</p><p>How are you?</p>"!

They charge $0.25 to send a message (capped at 1,500 characters, the length of five Bluesky posts), but clearly that money isn't used to pay competent software engineers (or even a Claude Code subscription!!!)

I study lottery winners. They have one habit in common.

Awful news--I don't understand outlets that think laying off their best reporters is the path to financial sustainability

Jessica Schulberg@jessicaschulberg.bsky.social

Today is my last day at HuffPost. After 11 years, I was laid off as part of the 33% cuts at BuzzFeed. My team, the National desk, was cut from 7 reporters to 3, after being cut from 14 to 7 just over a year ago

Theoretically all of these hazards could occur here! For all I know, this person is holding a bucket filled with radioactive chemicals and biological waste while standing in a very hot room. They could slip, get struck by the bucket, be exposed to the sludge, and then die of heat stroke.

This training also says that "personal accountability" is a key means of prevention for fall hazards. Excuse me, I don't think gravity cares whether I'm being accountable to myself and others...

In the Iliad, Homer eulogized "the courage of a fly, who works so hard and so persistently, yearning to bite a human being's flesh because she loves the taste of blood." Well, today, I met that fly. I hope she is satisfied.

I am very itchy, but I have a newfound respect for bloodsucking bugs. Imagine you had to bite a giant who is TRYING TO KILL YOU just to get breakfast each morning. No thank you--I will stick to my oatmeal! Oh, that one day I will perform a feat worthy of the courage of a fly...

I especially appreciate the metaphor, because most of the time when Homer wants to illustrate a warrior's bravery, he compares them to a lion or a boar. But when Menelaus, master of the war cry, stands atop the body of his dead friend, Pallas Athena grants him the boldness of a fly, not a lion.
