Since 2016, London’s cycling network has grown fivefold, from 90 to 450 kilometres. The results? 1.5 million daily cycle journeys—a 43% increase since 2019—twice as many bikes as cars on City of London streets during the day, and motor traffic in steady decline—having fallen 25% in the same period.

AI can quickly make a budget/forecast but then again so can a graduate who has recently started work. But budgeting is also a process rather than an output. It's a conversation between shareholders, managers and employees to get buy in.

Conceivably, all stakeholders could outsource to AI but later you'd get a lot of people walking swiftly away from their positions if things go badly.

We see no indication from Russia that it wants to end this war, or pursue any form of truce or peace. That's why we need to help Ukrainians get through winter and defend their country. Ukrainians need more air defence. We need to increase pressure on Russia to make it clear they have to negotiate.

Two things can be true: 1. The flying car looks very cool 2. It's part of Musk's ongoing grift (like going to Mars) and he's never going to deliver.

Reminder that the EU had no compunction about banning Russia Today. If anything, Musk’s behaviour is more egregious - directly assisting a foreign enemy's military attack. And this is on top of his support for race riots, Nazis and CSAM! By any measure, a threat to national security.

Steve Peers@stevepeers.bsky.social

It's legitimate for the EU, the UK, Canada and others to support their Ukrainian ally. If Musk is going to (in effect) assist Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine's allies should sanction Starlink, X and Tesla. At the very least, governments (and people) should stop using his fucking site already.

US energy policy in a nutshell: the US wants the free flow of energy from the Persian Gulf but is enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports while sanctioning Russia and trading for its diesel at the same time while Saudi oil/gas facilities are under attack by the Houthis that the US won't help fight

Are there similarities in the hype cycle with Blockchain, Uber, Autonomous vehicles and AI. Feels like an age since someone said that they were experimenting with AI. In 6 months time, I'm expecting the conversation to be around the lines of "But why use AI when this other method is better".

The difference with AI seems to be the huge amounts of physical infrastructure that goes along with it that the other trends didn't have - which were more purely software based.

Anyway - I am still expecting AI to be around for the long haul and will still be useful depending on task. Just the hype will have severely died off and regulation of the environment will slowly catch up. Wonder what the next hype will be?!

In Switzerland, heavy trucks are now more electric than passenger cars. Over the last 12 months: 28.0% of new heavy trucks were BEV 26.5% of new cars A year ago trucks were at 19%, so that's a huge jump. And buses are even further ahead at 48%.

For all those breathless commentators talking about USA stopping its leadership of the international legal order, I wonder how they factor in that US removed its signature from the ICJ in 1985 over being sued by Nicaragua. It's long been the case that US has sought to play by its own rules.

My friend's office is next door, I wasn't sure where she was at the time. Just heard from her and thankfully she is unharmed. What is happening in Kyiv right now is truly horrific. Millions of people are at risk of dying at any time. I'm not quite sure this really comes across, abroad.

very cool! interesting they're referring to the fuel engine in the ES-30 as a "range extender", suggesting they're going the Volt route of no direct drive linkage to the props. i'd figured the "power when you need it, efficiency when you don't" capacity of hybrids was going to be used for takeoff!

NEW from us: India's rapid clean power expansion has kept power sector emissions flat for two years, for the first time in over 50 years, and sharply reduced fossil fuel imports. Oil and gas consumption have also fallen for two years in a row, helping alleviate the Hormuz shock.

Another clear and knowable downstream consequence of letting scammers get rich off crypto was that that money would boomerang back into politics in ways that were highly likely to try to skirt around fundraising laws and distort policy incentives.

7/ Where active cooling is needed, reversible heat pumps deliver it from the same asset that decarbonises winter heating. Solving the cooling challenge this way also solves some of the heating one. The tools already exist.

9/11/2001 I was a freshman in high school in Alabama, I wore a hijab. In gym class my teacher wheeled in a screen. Something horrible was happening. I watched, mouth agape as the second tower hit. We were silent. As that period reached an end, my name was announced on the loud speaker. 1/

A lot can happen in a year. Next week, President @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu will reflect on the past year, Europe’s current state of affairs, and the priorities that will shape our future in her State of the Union address. So, what have we achieved over the past year? Here's a recap ⬇️

An experience that I wonder also applies here. When people ask me about the relevance of William Wallace on today's politics, I tend to mention that Bannockburn was 700 years ago. I am not sure people necessarily appreciate how long ago these events were when first asked to consider them.
