Libraries make us a harder target for authoritarianism. Equal access to info, ideas, and space that doesn’t require a purchase to belong. Also: using the library means money stays in your community instead of streaming out to Amazon. 📚 What’s checked out on your card right now?

Want to focus on someone's untimely death today? I'd focus on...

James Talarico@jamestalarico.bsky.social

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was murdered by ICE. His three sons called him “El mundo entero” — the whole world. They watched as their whole world died in a video posted on Facebook. Lorenzo was our neighbor and fellow Texan. He deserves justice.

ends justify the means? lying and misrepresentation by SCOTUS judges is appalling and cowardice. make a valid and honest argument... but you can't bc it doesn't exist!

Kevin Morris@kevintmorris.bsky.social

I am unspeakably angry about this turnout gap figure, and it gives insight into the whole ballgame for gutting the VRA. Alito points out that Black turnout exceeded White turnout twice in 5 elections. The argument is garbage 1/x

effectively malpractice. not informing the public.

Hassett: "If the war were to be extended, it wouldn't really disrupt the US economy very much at all. It would hurt consumers, and we'd have to think about what we'd have to do about that, but that's really the last of our concerns right now."

again lowering standards, like DHS, not because of DEI but due to the opposite...excluding talented people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. If DEI was the problem where are all the folks that were prevented by the policies? apparently not making the grade even without any competition?

SCOOP: DOJ has waived policy requiring newly hired prosecutors to have least a year (more often 3 years) experience practicing law. As DOJ struggles to replace mass departures w/ qualified applicants, this move allows hiring straight out of law school. news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/...

A victory for Trump, Putin and Netanyahu. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov: “To be honest, I don’t even understand now how anyone can call on others to follow the norms and principles of international law. In fact, it no longer exists.”

The US govt mixing video of real violence in a war it started with a video game scene feels like crossing a(nother) line. I’m not sure what to say. I don’t think war is a game. And even when I think military action is necessary, there are real human beings on the other end, not pixels that respawn.

I really appreciate this TikToker with Tourette syndrome, Shay, for taking the time to educate so many of us (including me) about her disability and coprolalia in light of what happened at the BAFTAs with John Davidson when Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage. I learned a lot.

(11/11) In this new normal, costs are individually adjusted to a consumer’s maximum threshold and wages to a worker’s minimum floor. The next time you see a price, know that it may not reflect what the item is worth—but what the algorithm believes *you* are worth.

Please read this long but important thread from an immigration defense attorney. If this administration is permitted to scale its current abuse, neglect, and inhumane treatment of immigrants to the breadth and scope for which they’re currently planning, we’ll all be witness to mass atrocities.

I don’t really know what I expect in posting this, but maybe some people see it and can learn from it. I’ll call it “lessons from an unwilling immigration attorney.” 1/

Black farmers are getting shut out by the Trump administration. John Boyd, president of the National Black Farmers Association, says the WH told him, they are “moving away from DEI and small farm issues, and they were focusing on large-scale white farms… because they produce the most food.”

Highlighting the speaker who stood in front of the Surprise mayor and told him to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf must’ve thought before he died by suicide: “He might have thought ‘how is this my fault I had no jurisdiction over this’ maybe he said ‘this site was not subject to local zoning.’”

Three rules in FBI firearm training: 1. Always point your weapon downrange 2. Do not point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot 3. Don’t put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to shoot Guns are not for threatening compliance for unarmed people doing things you don’t like

happening this morning in Minneapolis -- ICE agents drawing guns on observers. I reiterate again that it is only a matter of time before DHS kills more innocent people in Minnesota. Congress needs to shut this shit down right now.

I think what people who decide to oppose an available option b/c they decided ahead of time that it would fail actually want is to give themselves some sense they can control outcomes. Knowing something will fail and not even trying is failed. But at least it is an outcome, and you controlled it.

I go back to game theory and the Prisoner's Dilemma across multiple rounds. You can't have one side always choosing "cooperate" while the other side always chooses "snitch" and expect things to work. Optimal approach is always "cooperate first; on subsequent rounds, do what the other guy did"

Worth noting, I guess, that inside of a year we've gone from administration officials taking selfies of themselves at CECOT and bragging about how it's hell on earth to now getting their horrible little media worms to kill stories about it

Epstein redactions aren't believable, and they are valuable to fascists specifically because they aren't believable. Fascists prefer lies to truth. Believing in a lie is preferable to believing a truth, if what you want is to dominate. Believing lies dominates truth. So they believe lies.

This thread captures an aspect of MAGA I hadn't put words to. The lack of any self-created culture and identity. I would add culture or identity "beyond Trump". And Trump is not creative or even interesting, so there is no there there.
