I've mostly let this live outside of my personal work, but Belltower House is now halfway through its second season of residents and it's been a true joy to help host artists to work and rest in the high desert I love

Everest Pipkin@everest.bsky.social

I couldn't be more excited to announce something I've been working on for a long time - Please welcome Belltower House Artist Residency, a multidisciplinary gift of time in my erstwhile home in southern New Mexico, now accepting applications for 2026. belltowerhouse.org

We’re also trying something new for one session in the spring - a residency to rest and recover for activists and organizers, with a small honorarium and no project outcome expectations.

Would love to host the artists, writers, musicians, activists, friends in your life. Please feel free to share the open calls with those you think might like to see them.

Handcoded in HTML, CSS and Javascript and running locally, Scrubjay is usable for research, collection, game-building, website construction or simply to hold little fragments of digital things, in the same way that you hold a pebble in your palm on a walk.

When colonization came to call in the US, many folks wrote about america as a pristine Eden whose forest were filled with delights and bounty. This was because indigenous folk (Like mine) built up food forest. Things that were razed and destroyed as a part of racist violence. Colonization is ongoing

To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. All for a data center. www.gadgetreview.com/one-of-ameri...

I'm very please to announce a public release of my drag-and-drop bookmarking, game-making, and wandering tool Scrubjay! Scrubjay is a weird website builder that lets you cobble together web elements, images, links, text fragments, etc into a series of nested rooms...

The lineup is so good! I went 👀 seeing that @everest.bsky.social will be doing "a retrospective of video game holes." Their 2023 presentation on gardens is one I still think a lot about. www.youtube.com/watch?v=O78u...

The schedule's out - I'm speaking at the Roguelike Celebration again this year! My talk is titled "The City, The Street, The Lens" and it's about street photography, collisions in time and space and how to think about procedural generation differently. More here: www.roguelike.club/event2026.html

you hear no news; read no gazettes; extras with startling accounts of commonplaces never delude you into unnecessary excitements; you hear of no domestic afflictions; bankrupt securities; fall of stocks

i think i have to take my email off my website because the "ask claude to generate a list of 1000 people to email about my new project" boys are delivering the world's worst takes directly to my inbox

the first thing i read today had the subject line "I built a jail for AI. Thought this might be your kind of weird". it was a pitch for someone's (art?) project where they made a website for AI models who committed crimes to larp with you as if they were on death row

In mid-2025 Alex Spencer did an incredible preview of Big Walk for Edge, doomed to print purgatory. Been thinking about this vignette of Jake's hand-placing rocks ever since. As the slop wave intensifies, it's just a beautiful depiction of a game made by people who care (and have the time to care).

this isn't me complaining. it's easy enough to just delete the submission and move on to the next thing, which is occasionally still fascinating and clearly loved

it just has me thinking a lot... again... about the slipperiness of "tools" as a concept, as if usefulness were the only vector by which their merit should be judged, as if simple efficacy were always the goal and as if ease were always liberatory

when i first started assembling this list of joyful digital tools in 2019 the bulk of it was made of hobby projects- esoteric, semi-broken, sometimes abandoned, and very personal tools. but compelling! sometimes beautiful

now there are at least a few completely interchangable LLM-coded file convertors submitted to the directory every day. you know the type- GIF to HEIC, JSON to CSV, CSS beautifier, that sort of thing. they all look like this and are hosted on a custom domain that will be a gambling site in 6 weeks

the energy costs are catastrophic. the companies you rent them from are destroying the world in multiple axes. they are addictive and cause damaging brain patterns. they destroy community and shared knowledge through isolation and independence.

the software that LLMs write is not software i want to run on my computer. the text LLMs generate is not text i want to read or write. the images LLMs generate are not images i want to see or make. the music LLMs generate is not music i want to listen to or write.

using LLMs violates so many of my morals that its hard to even begin with arguing about it. any one is more than enough to not consider it, that when i see ppl dismissing it all at once, its so overwhelming.

Needs some beeswax to do that. Where'd I leave that beeswax...? I can't. I need to get the beeswax. Everyone's waiting on that beeswax. Beeswax... come on, Oddy, think! Know I saw some beeswax somewhere... Surely I can find some beeswax. Need to find the beeswax first.

Sirens, huh...? If only there were a way I could listen to their song *without* walking into the sea... Hmmm, maybe I could listen to their song *without* walking into the sea... Maybe this rope could help... but how...? I want to listen to their song, but if I do, I'll walk into the sea...

rural facebook is fantastic right now btw. old timers organizing to stall data center construction in the county. hundreds of comments calling flock camera vandals heros. everyone hates AI and loves the post office

Making a period tracker yourself is a really amazing way to take over your digital agency!! I want to teach a workshop where we each make a simple securely hosted (or locally hosted) website (that doesn't rely on large hosting platforms) where you can easily go to and enter your data
