I would be very interested to know how much money has been spent on these "tools" that no one in their right mind at the Big 5 wants to use, all while there's never any money to market and publicize midlist authors

Adam Morgan@adamm0rgan.bsky.social

For @wired.com, I spoke with Macmillan and PRH staff about AI at the rest of the Big Five. I also spoke with bestselling authors who've gone to "war" with publishers over AI use and are now demanding disclosures and threatening to leave their publishers altogether. www.wired.com/story/macmil...

Let’s not #SaveTheInternet, let’s make it worth saving. Let’s abandon failed internet governance 1.0 which assumed information = knowledge & that increasing information flows was necessarily positive/progressive without regard to rules, norms & accountability. Let’s reject cyberlibertarian premises.

Online spaces are captured by oligarchs and saturated with slop—and they’re exacerbating humanity’s worst impulses. It’s time to start over.

In my book I argue that IP fandoms are a crucial part of the economic model of the current media monopoly landscape, as fan campaigns drive down the value of creative labor via harassment and disposability, scare artists from taking risks with IP, and give execs a direct fan base all their own

Charlotte@fireantprincess.bsky.social

I think a lot could be said about how fandoms are very much structured to be consumerist without any critical analysis of capitalist production, and how this is the logical end result of that.

I’m more upset than necessary about the Marissa Mayer AI thing. I could literally point at -*any random little girl* and say, I sense that she’s empathetic! Creative! and loves animals! And win the lottery. What kind of person would tell this story out loud??

I wasn't going to comment on this but as a parent of three children I just. can't. get over it. What. How. Why. The appeal to "how smart am I" by suggesting she was overwhelmed by "range and complexity" (yes, humans are complex) when it is just basic parenting to know your child. Does she not know?

I only ever received two death threats online. One was from JDA. But that's a fraction of what he did to Paul and many other good people in our community. That's why I'm extremely disappointed that File 770 chose to give him a platform.

If you don't want to "debate trans issues," then don't. Say "girls deserve to play sports with their friends without creeps trying to look in their pants. We protect women and girls by making sure they have equal pay, equal rights, and health care." This isn't hard unless you're a coward.

None of us should forget this. Meta should be subjected to corporate death penalty and permanently broken up into small pieces.

Things have been crazy here this past week not just bc of normal life but because a long-standing, well-respected and ethical preservation breeder of borzoi, had a litter of ten (yes, TEN) puppies snatched from her yard. They're only 5 weeks, and unweaned. The community has been scrambling.

Hey, so, it actually took a lot of people doing a lot of unpaid work for Jon Del Arroz to be properly marginalized from the SFF community, and now he’s back, and in one of the more widely read genre fan columns around. So I just have one question: @file770.bsky.social, what the actual hell?

CD Covington reposted

We need a concerted national project to make this sort of bigotry totally destructive to normal social life. This should be meeting-ending, date-breaking, courtesy-shattering stuff. Water should be thrown in peoples' faces. Customers should be kicked out of restaurants. Make these fuckers pariahs.

Naomi Kritzer@naomikritzer.bsky.social

It really shouldn't require people to debunk this sort of absolute gutter racism but Somalis are strikingly hard-working people and this was noticeable basically as soon as they started arriving. They came legally, they're hard working, they learn English, they make their kids do their homework.

Kobayashi Maru that shit. The whole premise is bullshit. Shut the trolley down. No one needs to die.

CD Covington reposted

Increasingly of the opinion that the correct answer to the Trolley Problem is "fuck you, why are you so fixated on finding reasons to justify killing people?"

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Which is wild, because the answer is, "Do you live in a society?" "Do you use roads? Expect the firefighters to show up if something catches on fire? Want 'those damn kids' to have afterschool programs instead of running loose on your lawn? Want there to be doctors when you need them?"

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Every time someone’s bitching about why we can’t protest like they do in France, I want to stick a bullhorn in their face and yell “FERGUSON.” White liberals in particular have memory-holed what happened in Ferguson and how many Black organizers died under suspicious circumstances afterward.
