Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

PS -IF YOU CAN, VOTE EARLY There *will* be post-election madness; the more votes banked early, the harder it will be to mess with the results. -IF IT'S AT ALL POSSIBLE, *PLEASE* VOTE/DROP OFF YOUR BALLOT IN PERSON It'll be harder to mess with in-person results. chart via @bittersouth.bsky.social

I can accept the Muppets being in commercials because they’re showbiz people. I cannot accept the Sesame Street Muppets being in commercials because they’re educators.

Amazing. Trump is being awarded Washington Coal Club’s inaugural “Undisputed Champion of Coal” award It's "inaugural" because there will totally be future recipients and it's not just a made-up thing designed to suck to Trump. Like with the "first annual" FIFA Peace Prize www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

The last time he started talking like this, his allies minimized the risks and we ended up with January 6. This time we must take him literally and seriously. These comments are a five-alarm fire for democracy. In a functioning republic, he would be impeached and removed from office today.

Trump: "These people were brought to our country to vote, & they vote illegally. The Republicans should say, we should take over the voting in at least 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting. We have states that I won that show I didn't win. You're gonna see something in Georgia"

The media is still missing the biggest story in the Epstein emails. The emails show Epstein helped Russia blackmail Donald Trump. He was advising Putin's circle on how to control the US President. Trump is compromised. We need to make sure everyone sees this:

Dispatching ICE agents to hit "groups of pre-defined aliens specifically targeted by Leadership for action," the software allows the administration to order up a goon squad wherever they want, at the touch of a button. Like Uber for authoritarians. Let's call it repression as a service.

Nearly half of the databases that the CDC used to update regularly — surveillance systems that tracked public health information like Covid vaccination rates and hospitalizations for respiratory syncytial virus — have been paused without explanation, according to new research.

Just visited with Liam and his father at Dilley detention center. I demanded his release and told him how much his family, his school, and our country loves him and is praying for him.

I'm just going to keep saying this until I die: In a white supremacist patriarchy, you have value only insofar as you serve the white supremacist patriarchy. Kyle Rittenhouse & Ashli Babbitt did. Renee Good & Alex Pretti didn't. On Jan 6, the insurrectionists did. The cops didn't. Rinse, repeat.

Mehdi Hasan@mehdirhasan.bsky.social

The people who spent years defending and even lionizing Kyle Rittenhouse and Ashli Babbitt now want us to believe that an unarmed mother in her car and a disarmed nurse were domestic terrorists who deserved to be murdered by law enforcement.

Can’t help but notice a lot of social media reports of Tik Tok censoring anti-ICE content in its first weekend under Trump-directed US management, and no mainstream news coverage thus far.

If you want proof that Trump is going to try to rig the elections, here it is: In a letter to Gov. 11/ For nearly 100 years, Harvard has been tracking thousands of citizens, figuring out which lives lead to happiness and which to emptiness. And their finding is simple. Careers and money don't lead to happiness. Connection, friendship, and camaraderie do.

My son gave me A Chill in the Air, Iris Origo's Italian war diary, 1939-1940. It's an antifa document in retrospect, but in the foreground it's just a diary. We need books like this now. I hope diaries are not extinct & not every observation or voice of anguish is being spent on Bluesky or TikTok.

I want to take a moment of reflection. I don’t post a lot of threads anymore (bc really who wants to read them) but this seems like a good time to make a few points about wins & losses & surviving & fighting during the Trump administration’s siege on democracy. Especially as 2025 comes to a close.

Deliberation is under threat. Without common facts and shared epistemic ground, public debate becomes everyone yelling in their bubbles, not collective reasoning. The VDA framework highlights this as a structural fault line.
