luddites will say AI is useless but they overlook the massive productivity gains that can come from offloading the task of remembering anything at all about your children

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Once again I have spent 3 days trying to cut up to 10 or 15 slides from a presentation and have instead added 6. What is wrong with me and how do we fix it

Sending a note to my students about the course overload policy and accidentally typed the curse overload policy and I truly believe I am in violation of it because I have way too many curses this year.

Nothing I have to say about this man would pass mods and there is no French Revolution emoji, so I will just spit on the ground and keep moving. IYKYK.

Joel Kaplan is out at Meta, in another signal that Silicon Valley is getting ready to court the Democrats, HARD. Don’t believe their crocodile tears. No rehabilitation for the engineers of technofascism.

If you take the suggestion to let it take notes in class, you're likely violating not just the professor's classroom recording policy but also the university's (you would be at my school, anyway).

Dropping off at GoodWill in NJ and someone left this at the donation door and I should clearly cancel my flight home and drive this thing back to IL, right?

Why do hotels in the US have tvs now that don't do anything but ask you to sign in to your own services? Like I want local news as background noise but the tvs are basically just for show.

The dog is extremely furious that I am packing again and she doesn't understand this one isn't my fault. She will only make the judgiest of eye contact.

The number of platforms offering me genAI to write my sister's obituary is more than one and I just don't understand how we got here. Bleaker than PKD ever imagined even on the wildest drugs.

I thought we were at the super intelligence phase, why is the local spa still putting out slop ads with so many fingers 🧐

If I built an AI lab and it went rogue and deleted all student loan information, I'm betting they'd suddenly figure out how to prosecute me.

1/2 🎇 Good news! 🎇 The kind people at Behavioral and Brain Science have made the new collection on "Conscious AI and biological naturalism" #OpenAccess for a limited time: target article, all 50 commentaries, & my response. Go to the link and click 'save pdf': doi.org/10.1017/S014.... Do share!

I completely forgot that when I came downstairs for breakfast this morning, I found the dog sitting at the dining room table cosplaying being human again

The machine did not "go rogue." The machine belongs to and is the responsibility of the people who own it. Hold those people accountable for their goddamn machine.

I can write a eulogy or I can shitpost about AI bullshit at 11pm on a Friday night and I think you know which one I'm going to do

The universe remains full of absurdity in the full Camus sense. My sister died and I was scheduled to teach Camus' Myth of Sisyphus today. Dramatic irony. (I definitely did not teach Camus today but probably it's just what I need).

Don't worry, 6500000 philosophers trying to claim an AOS in AI are asking literally nothing else

what if the AIs don't like doing the fancy math problems? nobody ever asks that

I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.

Handed out my Good Place and Philosophy class's midterms today, inspired by Season 2 ep 12 ("The Burrito"). They are highly incentivized to help one another, because:

More in the spirit of telling people on here when I'm teaching with their materials: Monday my AI in Fact and Fiction class is discussing @samtasticbooks.com's The Rabbit Test in our continuing discussions of data and surveillance!

So I have my AI students do an assignment where they count surveillance cameras in a location of their choosing so we can talk about the ways data is aquired and used, and one student counted 65 cameras in our tiny SLAC library. THE LIBRARY. I haven't confirmed yet but MY GOD.

Me to the dog: should we drug you today so you don't bite my friend tomorrow? Everybody loves drugs! Drugs are great! My tween, without looking up from his video game: you're sending me some very mixed messages right now.

Also on this note, I should mention my senior capstone students just finished @tonychemero.bsky.social's Intertwined Creatures and one wrote "where has Chemero's work been all my life" so I'm really pleased with my students this year, obvs!

I like to tell people on here when I'm teaching with their materials so this is my yearly reminder that my AI in Fact and Fiction class is reading @timmaughan.bsky.social's "Be Good For Goodness' Sake" today, alongside Bradbury's The Veldt, as an intro to our discussions of surveillance capitalism

An interesting side-product of @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social sending US folks to Blackwells online for his books is that I've also discovered Blackwells online will ship overseas to me for even better prices than amazon in many cases (and they have lovely UK editions of things I can't otherwise get!)
