I recently visited Converse Basin Grove in Sequoia National Forest.
A little over a century ago, a lumber company cut down roughly 8,000 giant sequoias here, nearly wiping out one of the greatest sequoia groves on Earth.
What remains today? californiacurated.substack.com/p/giants-fal...

I'm camping near North Bay, ON and there are so many cool fungi. Lots of Amenita muscaria in different stages. Anyhoo here are a few cool squishy bois.

This is the "sand" on Glass Beach. It's all beautiful, smooth glass. I posted a video earlier. This is unsifted, I simply scooped my hands into the beach and this is the result. A big beach full of this. Tumbled by Mother Nature for decades. More in alt txt.

I know that for some
Halloween
begins on September 1st,
but as you hang spider webs
and put out the giant skeleton
please be aware
that Halloween candy
is currently being recalled
in 13 states
due to undeclared allergens,
so this spooky season
is off to a scary start.
Do these agencies
have a responsibility
to issue recalls
of contaminated food?
Yes, these agencies
have a responsibility
to issue recalls
of contaminated food.
But more than that
these agencies
have a responsibility
to prevent these recalls
from ever being necessary.
When does graffiti become a mural. House near me has a huge bougainvillea bush. Outside on the fence someone painted the bush spilling over it with hundreds of blooms
Nobody ever damaged despite graffiti on nearby fences
Beautiful colours of the Blue-Throated Barbet 22cm
Native to high altitude Himalayas and SE Asia
Male and female blue-throated barbets are identical in appearance.
approximately less than 50% of all bird species are sexually monomorphic, meaning males and females look virtually identical.
As the week begins
new recalls are being issued
for tofu
contaminated with ink,
for mangoes
contaminated with salmonella,
for white rice
contaminated with foreign material,
and I must admit
that lately my appetite
for information,
is making me lose
my actual appetite.

I sent the historian an article
about how Nazi ships have been emerging from the Danube
as extreme heat
causes the rover to shrink, and the historian replied that these days there seem to be Nazis emerging everywhere.
Mobile queen conch hatcheries strive to help the species, engage Caribbean communities
International demand for queen conch meat and shells has led to severe overharvesting, while habitat degradation, pollution and warming waters add further threats

My Russian sitting distafff. I'm trying to stabilize areas of paint loss, and slow down further damage. I suppose I should stop taking it to workshops, where I inevitably drop it on the floor when I forget I'm sitting on it, and stand up without holding onto it first.

Amazing what a bit of rain can do! Just spotted this slime mold called Scrambled egg slime! So bright and yellow! Also known as Dog vomit slime or Flowers of Tan (Fuligo septica) #fungi#slime
I sent my aunt, the doctor,
a study from “Circulation:
Population Health Outcomes”
which found “ominous” evidence
of “artery damage
in nearly 8 in 10 young adults,”
and by way of reply
my aunt sent me multiple studies
on how Covid-19
causes lasting damage to arteries.
🧵Spotted on a Rainy Day in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A tiny human (2?) is marching down the footpath with a fist full of daffodils. Holding them out in front of her like a magnificent talisman to ward off the grey of the day. (1)
Eurasian Scops Owl (Otus scops): 21cm (8.3in). This small owl is aka the European scops owl or just scops owl. This species is a part of the larger grouping of owls known as typical owls, Strigidae, which contains most species of owl. Beautiful photo taken by Luca Vignati in Italy #scopsowl#nature

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A woman (80s?) who is small in stature, with a vibrant personality is standing in the biscuit aisle of a supermarket. She says to a passerby: "The problem with biscuits is that I eat all the biscuits! I never regret it. But I DO eat them all." (1)
I sent, my friend,
the scientist an article
titled “Why scientists
see AI leaders
as false prophets,”
and she replied:
it’s because they
are false prophets;
so I sent, my friend,
the computer programmer
the same article,
and they replied:
their profits
are false too.
Upon a temporary wall
at the art museum
a simple sign explained:
“The
Gallery of
Conscience
is
CLOSED
for
construction”
so if you are wondering
what has become
of our conscience
just know it is a gallery
that is closed for construction
though hopefully it will open soon.
