You simply cannot be walking around with a ball of keys in your pocket if millennials are going to have any hope of holding onto skinny jeans

The generation that got to buy cheap houses thanks to a postwar construction boom, then blocked new housing construction to juice their asset values is now whining that they have to pay taxes on their unearned wealth. Just breathtaking selfishness.

The wayfinding at El Monte station is so abysmal. @metrolosangeles.bsky.social J line picks up at a completely unmarked stop. On top of that the silver steak heading the same direction is at the opposite end of the platform and you can't keep an eye on both at the same time.

This is a moral atrocity and it needs to be loudly condemned as such. There is a reason that democracies *don't* do publicly televised executions (and why many don't execute people at all): it inculcates and rewards bloodthirst, which corrupts the spirit and corrodes the foundation of the polity.

Imagine someone telling you they live in a mid sized suburb and saying "damn, you must be cool as hell"

This is especially insane given that the related helicopter crash will be fully investigated by the NTSB and based on those findings changes may result, and yet with the car crash we're just gonna say "oh the driver was drunk, better luck next time"

Stan Oklobdzija@stano.bsky.social

This is the six-lane car sewer where the crash took place. The State Senate just killed a bill that would crack down on drunk drivers and the Mayor of LA got a road diet like by calling in a favor with the legislature. California is a pro vehicular homicide state. We're like chud states with guns.

I'm so sick of the free transit thing. As if Metro wasn't burdened enough by it's own wasteful nonsense already, Bass is out giving it more slopulism to carry.

Good morning. Someone is always going to make money on housing. Personally, I think it is better for developers to make money building new homes for people to live in than for landlords and homeowners to continue getting rich off of artificial housing scarcity.

George Coffey reposted

If I'm being honest, the collapse of the post-Cold War international order and the violent occupation of an American city are making it difficult for me to concentrate on housing policy.

AI is the culmination of the instagram culture of "who did this"/"credit on request" stealing of content, which itself was created by the hopelessly long copyright lengths in the US

Just like so many things in the US, setting up a regulatory system where something is artificially over valued creates an incentive for a solution that runs a circle around it

Because someone wanted to own Mickey Mouse for as long as possible it meant using most IP was complicated or impossible, so people started doing it anyway as long as the creator was small enough to not be able to hire a lawyer, now they just make a computer do that instead, but it's all kinda melty

More fundamentally, the political tension in American cities right now is between a faction who exists to protect the rents of incumbent interests and another who is allergic to any idea of trade-offs because they think there's a magic button that eliminates scarcity and only they will press it.

I hate that we’re having to think in these terms, but the evidence seems to be bearing out that steep fare hikes are less damaging to ridership than service cuts.

OK, less contentious post: You've been placed in charge of a movie studio, and have an unlimited budget to adapt any work of your choosing that has never been made into a live-action TV series or film. What are you picking? For me: PC Hodgell's Kencyrath Cycle and there's no close second

The fact that the free market approach to health care has resulted in such extreme levels of tragedy has really scrambled people's brains that it cannot possibly be appropriate to supply other things

Matatoes Lasagna@matatoeslasagna.bsky.social

A fun thing about YIMBY dorks is that they are incapable of scrutinizing the hyper capitalist economic model that treats housing as a service that can only be solved via free market principles rather than a human right that may be at odds with endless profit and rent seeking

People somewhat reasonably assume that the rules governing our built environments are built on careful assessment of the best available science and rigorous analysis of tradeoffs but in reality it's like 85% vibes.

There are people driving around behind ICE honking their horns to warn people, and then there are the people in the replies too afraid to publicly say they went to a No Kings march

It’s extremely funny because the online fringe can’t decide if No Kings is either a terrifying brush with death or a do-nothing wine mom fake protest, and it becomes kind of clear after a while they just feel angst about stuff happening in reality

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

the upshot of impressionable people seeing blowhards talk about attending a protest like they're Neil McCauley planning a heist is "oh wow going to those things is dangerous" which probably gets you off if you consider yourself a "professional" protestor but is Actually Bad Overall

Bass calling Los Angeles a "Pro Housing City" is another level of deranged

Alissa Walker@awalkerinla.bsky.social

LA Mayor Karen Bass is requesting a veto on transit-oriented development bill SB 79, which is headed to Gavin Newsom's desk: "While SB 79 allows for local ordinances as an alternative compliance, it does not provide a viable path for a pro-housing city like Los Angeles"

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

ICE used your taxpayer dollars to trick out a bunch of trucks in new livery, all painted black with "ICE" and a logo printed in gold on the side (and Trump's name in gold on the back window), then shoot a rap video in DC to post on social media. I am not making this up.
