@chrisbohjalian.bsky.social safe travels and good luck as you start your tour for THE AMATEUR today! Hope to see you next week in Doylestown. It’s a little under 2 hours but so is everything when you live in NEPA.

"83% of LLM users could not quote a single line from essays they had written minutes earlier. When the LLM group was forced to write without AI in a follow-up session, their brain activity did not bounce back to baseline; the researchers coined the term 'cognitive debt' for the lingering deficit."

Oh hell yeah @amnesty.org comes out swinging: "Amnesty International finds that standalone generative AI systems... are fundamentally incompatible with IHRL. As such, Amnesty International is calling for a prohibition of such systems." www.amnesty.org/en/documents...

It's worth your time to call Hilton to cancel your account with them. 1-800-446-6677. Here's why: They asked me if it was because of the ICE thing. I said it was. Then they suggested I wait a couple days to see if they were going to change course. The pressure is getting to them. Let's keep it up.

An associate dean told English faculty “literature with major plot lines that concern gay, lesbian or transgender identities should not be taught in core-curriculum classes…faculty may assign textbooks with chapters that cover transgender identity, so long as they do not talk about the material.”🙃

Deep is a wise and lovely former colleague. When he speaks, listen.
There’s a great and reporting-driven opinion essay by Lydia Polgreen in the NYT about how Indian Americans have found themselves flat-footed after the surge in anti-Indian rhetoric and policy from the right. Here's a few thoughts on how South Asian Americans can toughen up to survive this new era 1/

By any reasonable historical standard — including that of the technology industry! — ChatGPT should be pulled from the market and its product managers and executives held accountable for creating a product that ROUTINELY tells teens to kill themselves. This is a basic, common sense standard.

It's utterly insane, but statistically probably unsurprising, that there was more than one Brown student who had previously experienced a mass school shooting, including one who was actually shot, @miatretta.bsky.social. It doesn't have to be this way.
We sadly know Zoe Weissman because of Parkland. In fact, our families are so close, that she has been there for my wife and I after Parkland and helped with our foundation Orange Ribbons For Jaime. America, are you ok with this?

A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

We have had a lot of conversations in my department about how to deconstruct the idea of an essay as a “product” and reconstruct what we were always using it for to begin with: how to teach critical thinking, audience analysis, support with evidence, research, source evaluation and scrutiny, etc.
I gotta say I find a lot of AI discourse around higher ed very confusing. "if ChatGPT can write your essays is college even worth it?" did people think math teachers were assigning problem sets because *they* couldn't figure out the answers?
