Comments due tomorrow (Oct. 13) on a proposed change to NIH procedures that would conceal expert reviewer scores on grant proposals from program officers & PIs and reduce the effectiveness of peer review, part of a larger project to sideline experts and politicize federal funding decisions. 👇

Joshua Weitz@joshuasweitz.bsky.social

The NIH proposal to conceal reviewer scores from program officers, investigators, and advisory councils is ill-conceived, introduces disproportionate weight to small percentile differences, diminishes the role of scientific peer review, and should be withdrawn in its entirety. a 🧵

Excited to share a new minireview from my lab led by @anyawoj.bsky.social and Melissa Shinfuku. We highlight how multiple variants of a single bacterial species can coexist in the human body and how this impacts human health. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/... #Microsky #Microbiome #Microdiversity

journals.asm.orgNo strain, no gain: within-host bacterial microdiversity and human health | Infection and ImmunityThe bacterial world is teeming with diversity, from cyanobacteria to episymbiotic Saccharibacteria to the well-studied Escherichia coli. However, even within a single species, organisms vary in their gene content and gene sequences, leading to significant functional differences across very closely related bacteria. For instance, two isolates of E. coli may share only 40% of the same gene content, allowing different strains to function as human pathogens, gut mutualists, or environmental specialists (1–4). Although this population-level diversity in bacteria has been long-recognized, recent studies have increasingly emphasized that a single person can harbor multiple genotypes of a species at the same time within a single body site. High within-host intra-species diversity can occur in the human microbiota, including in the gut, skin, oral cavity, and vagina. Furthermore, although acute infections are primarily monoclonal, chronic infections can often be polyclonal. Both in the microbiota and in chronic infections, this high intra-species diversity can occur when multiple strains colonize a site over time and when bacteria diversify through evolutionary processes.

Microbiology professors/PIs, would you like to join the microPI slack? Microbiology is defined broadly. This is an open tent. Professor/PI is inclusive to teaching focused roles, or pure research PI roles like a National lab PI. Reply or DM me and I will send you a link.

We've been learning a lot about how Enterococcus faecalis interacts with neutrophils lately. In our latest preprint, @harisantypas.bsky.social describes how lactic acid from E. faecalis dampens neutrophil metabolism leading to NETosis and phagoytosis suppression. #microsky

Scientific journal editor here: If you're invited to peer review an article and you can't do it, please just click "no." That tells me "this person can't do it, I should invite someone else." Otherwise the system waits 3 weeks to tell me that you didn't respond and I should invite someone else.

Going to be a good day at #ASMicrobe Check out two presentations from my lab: Alyssa Hamm is taking about bacterial scRNA-seq at 3:15 in 151AB Grace Heine is presenting poster MECH-SAT-496 on the role of strain- and species-level diversity in microbial interactions

Excited to be in DC for #ASMicrobe! Come find me at poster MECH-FRI-454 this afternoon. Or please reach out if you want to chat about this open position in my lab!

Delighted to see this out in its final form! doi.org/10.1093/isme... We established a discussion group focussed on the history of community ecology and how it informs our understanding of microbiota. This review distils those discussions to provide a guide for microbiologists entering the field

A substantial part (but not all) of this increased investment is multi-year funded grants. My current estimate is that multi-year funding has been used in lieu of ~2400 annually funded grants that could have been made. 2/2
