1/17 Submissions are now open for the 2027 Microbial Population Biology GRC! We expect this meeting to be extraordinarily oversubscribed. If you want to come, time is of the essence--apply ASAP!

There's A LOT of ways the Trump admin is currently attacking & decimating American science.
Here's a breakdown of what they are doing, and what you can do about it. 🧵
However, their approach asked how well an experimental model did for a single bacterial species, and we wanted to know how well it did for the community as a whole. We used chronic wounds as our model system, and were able to use our framework to iteratively improve our model.
This is where it got cool! We found this framework also allowed us to evaluate if interactions known to occur in our lab models actually occur in situ! Overall, we think this is a really neat way to better understand microbial dynamics in situ and build better models. We hope you check it out!
We wanted a way to determine how well our experimental model systems captured microbial community physiology in the native environment, building on recent work by @ginalewin.bsky.social and Marvin Whiteley, who used a similar approach using transcriptomics.
Microbiology professors/PIs, would you like to join the microPI slack?
Microbiology is defined broadly. This is an open tent.
Professor/PI is inclusive to teaching focused roles, or pure research PI roles like a National lab PI.
Reply or DM me and I will send you a link.
Remember the current NIH director going on about protecting researchers from government censorship?
Today his people called the police in to forcibly remove my colleagues from their own society meeting for sharing an editorial published in their flagship journal that was critical of him.

The current President of the ADA is Harvard Medical School's Dr. Enrique Caballero. Perhaps he'd like to hear from you if you think the ADA's actions in ejecting Dr. Kahn and his colleagues from the national meeting were wrong

Steven Kahn, director of the UW Diabetes Research Center, was removed by police from a national conference as he and others handed out copies of an editorial.
Going to be a good day at #ASMicrobe
Check out two presentations from my lab:
Alyssa Hamm is taking about bacterial scRNA-seq at 3:15 in 151AB
Grace Heine is presenting poster MECH-SAT-496 on the role of strain- and species-level diversity in microbial interactions
BREAKING:
New proposed OMB regulation, applying to all federal grants, requiring grant reviews by senior political appointees and re-emphasizes that "peer review remains advisory and does not replace agency discretion".
#standupforsciencepublic-inspection.federalregister.gov/2026-10817.pdf
This has been bubbling up for a while.
If enacted, it will formalize the illegal termination of grants and undermine the federal government's role as a trusted partner in accelerating R&D.
How do teams plan, hire, and build over the long-term if OMB builds in punishment as a precondition?
This is a disaster. Science is an international endeavor. Major steps forward happen through serendipity and collaboration. Grants fund science, but people -- Americans and non-Americans, both in our country and overseas -- create science. That makes us healthier, richer, and safer.
NEW: A serious staffing shortage — of the Trump admin's own making — is delaying the agency's ability to send billions to universities around the country, leaving labs reeling in the meantime.
“I thought we were at rock bottom”, a senior NIH official said. “We are below rock bottom now.”
Major update from #SCIMaP, including
* Impact analysis of White House's FY 2027 proposed cuts to NIH and NSF.
* Fact sheets showing impacts in Congressional districts.
* New analysis on how baseline science funding benefits the economy and jobs in local communities.
More via scienceimpacts.org
The White House’s April 3 budget proposal would reduce NSF & NIH funding significantly. Our analysis shows that the U.S. stands to lose $35 billion in economic activity and 150,000 jobs nationwide.

My lab at Pitt is looking for a Research Scientist to help us make phage therapy for patients with antibiotic-resistant infections. Please share and apply! cfopitt.taleo.net/careersectio...

Looking for sources for a @nature.com story about how researchers are coping in the midst of current events: If you're a PhD or other academic who's struggling to focus with everything that's happening in the world and would like to be interviewed for this story, please get in touch ASAP!
tomorrow, StandWithMinnesota.com will hit a million site visits and over 650,000 unique visitors.
i made it 10 days ago with $600 from you guys for hosting and cloudflare.
thank you. thank you.
I don’t want to hear anything from an elected official unless it’s a plan to defund the DHS and impeach Noem, Bovino, etc. No texts. No emails. No talk about the economy. Step up or step off.
Alex Pretti was a colleague at the VA. We hired him to recruit for our trial. He became an ICU nurse- I lover working with him. He was a good kind person who lived to help and these fuckers executed him.
White. Hot. Rage.
Per his colleagues: The victim’s name was apparently Alex Pretti and he was an ICU nurse caring for severely injured veterans at the VA Hospital. He was acting as an observer, filming the raid. Any suggestion that he was there with violence on his mind is horrific gaslighting.

Minneapolis Police Chief O'Hara: "The video speaks for itself. We have identified this person - 37-year-old, white male, resident of the city. The only interaction that we are aware of with law enforcement has been for traffic tickets and we believe he is a lawfully gun owner with a permit to carry"
This video filmed by Ben Luhmann shows the moment a federal agent sprayed chemical irritants directly into a man's face in south Minneapolis.
Three agents already had the man pinned to the ground when a fourth agent walked up and sprayed the irritants.
"Liam’s teacher, Ella Sullivan, teared up when thinking about Liam. 'He’s a bright young student,' she said, 'and he’s so kind and loving. His classmates miss him.'"

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.
