So hard to pick a favorite part of this article. Pretending that sending unsolicited dick pics at 53 was a “youthful indiscretion” is good, but don’t sleep on the argument that his wife forgave him for subjecting other women to unwanted nude photos so everyone else should too

In my base model, 2027 revenue is $108.6B, but that's still producing only a 5.1% operating margin. Their upcoming contracted compute is really expensive! Anything but a bull case for them makes their IPO (and even their Series H) way overvalued.

Greg Linden reposted

I agree with that. I don't question Anthropic's viability, I question the market vibe that it will have explosive profit growth. For the next 5 years they're more like an oil company than a software startup: a lot of cash and likely revenue, but a ton of $$$ committed to building/running wells.

2/ Also of note: over history, elite tax evasion is a good measure of a failing state. At times of dynastic change in traditional China, for example, when provincial elites managed to escape central gov't tax collection, that was both a symptom and a cause of diminishing state capacity. /fin

Capital gains should be taxed when the assets are monetize, whether that's via sale or via loan

Steven T. Dennis@steventdennis.bsky.social

For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

Greg Linden reposted

FWIW, Anthropic admits its current margins may not be representative. There's a bit of lucky timing here: big revenue growth while on the tail end of cheap compute contracted more than a year ago. Their future compute is... not so cheap. (1st pic their S-1, second are my graphics based on S-1.)

The unit economics here are frankly shocking they're so good. This is wildly stronger than I expected tbh.

I'm wildly biased on this front, but I continue to believe the last decade of self-driving technology remains one of the best ways to understand how "AI" will and will not have a lasting impact

Regime Accountant, CPA ☠️🎢@regimecpa.bsky.social

AI really does change the speed at which you can do things but every product is still very 80 / 20. Getting to the MVP feels really good and goes really fast, getting the UI to actually work in a sane way is going to require a lot of annoying and frankly boring testing / use.

The case opens the door for other federal employees to sue to get their jobs back. This is not an ideal process since it is costly for all concerned to go to court. That is why we used to have a credible and bipartisan appeals process. But the Supreme Court has allowed Trump to gut it.

In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story: www.404media.co/chatgpt-keep...

404media.coChatGPT Keeps Telling People 404 Media Can Solve Their Tech Support ProblemsBecause big tech doesn't do customer service, we are being inundated with AI-generated emails begging us for help.

I find the Anthropic IPO a bet against where I think AI tools are going to go. I think the Chinese strategy of low cost models is going to win, specialized narrow models, like distilled coding assistants only for Java or only for Python, that are small and run at low cost in production.

Greg Linden@glinden.bsky.social

Overall, the risks seem enormous. If you invest your money, you're buying a piece of a company with no shareholder control and massive legal liabilities and regulatory risk at a price that starts with an assumption of x100 growth while somehow maintaining high margins that survive all competition.

Sure, a lot of the Anthropic IPO is just a momentum play, pure speculation, where you don't want to be the last one out, left holding the bag. But it is an interesting question whether these companies can get the growth and high margins they require given the competition.

I'm curious how many more of these AI agent math proofs we'll see over the next few months. It could be that there was low hanging fruit for these new tools where applying them resulted in quick wins that are now all gone. It may just be incremental gains from here.

Similar question for many AI hacks. There's a lot of sloppy code out there and idiots with weak default passwords. New types of brute force search, like script kiddies did at one point, will reveal new ones. AI agents may have just done that, finding low hanging fruit that is now mostly picked.
