I wake up in the morning and think, “Again?!” Code by day. Write by night. Scuba all the time.

an outdated system in a salmon farm using PHP was found to have been breached, allowing the attackers to perform remote cod execution

I’m regularly flummoxed by people assuming I will be interested in or appreciative of their copy–pasting LLM output prompted with the topic in reply to me. If I was interested in that, I would just do it myself. What value could you possibly imagine you are contributing

Matt Weiner@mattweiner19.bsky.social

"directly" is important here. using a thoughtfully designed thing that someone else has coded with an LLM can be fine! there's a bunch of those at fangraphs but I do not want to hear what the LLM has to say. The "Tilly Norwood" responses in that interview were physically difficult to read.

To be a writer is to burn with the need to put words to page. To not just want to write but to **need** to write. After particularly satisfying bursts of writing you think you'll be sated for a while; but you're not. It will build up after 3 or 4 days. Go two weeks and you feel like a failure.

The EA movement *thinks* it's being rational about charitable funds, but what's really happening is that it's paring down charity to the simplest and most legible metrics in very poorly controlled ways, resulting in inefficient allocation, because they aren't charity professionals.

The horse carriage industry is coming to an end in New York City. Our administration will make sure workers and owners are protected and the horses are safe.

Ever wonder why an Italian had to go begging the Spanish crown for money to fund his voyages? Yeah, turns out lots of bankers and nobles in Italy knew Columbus was: 1. a loose cannon 2. not great a math, which made his nav skills suspect so they sent him packing.

By the end of Book 24, the “menin” is over. He stays because thats where he’ll achieve “athanatos kleos”. Patroclus dying is WHY he went back on the battlefield but not why he stays. The whole damn poem revolves around Achilles being salty about being dishonored near the end of his life.

AHHHHHHH THE ONLY REASON HE EVEN STAYS TO DIE AT TROY IN THE ILIAD IS TO AVENGE PATROCLUS. IT'S A POEM ABOUT HIS RAGE. THE OPENING LINES ARE PRETTY CLEAR WHY CAN'T A SINGLE DEFENDER OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION READ A SINGLE THING FROM THE WESTERN CANON AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

instead of having one quiet train car, they should have two “loud” cars and that way people who have loud phone conversations or are juggling kids who want to sing songs, can do so and the rest of us can be in peace.

I'm at the point where I'm ignoring tech guides written in the past year. They're uniformly slop. I'd rather read something slightly out of date than another "Here's the thing..."

Classics & Religious Studies degree here. I partnered with an early OCR effort because the programmers couldn't tell if things had scanned correctly. In the end, it was a lot faster to teach me some Python than to try and teach them some Attic Greek.

History and International Relations degrees here. I learned to program because an Econ prof didn’t want us to have to pay for Stata in grad school.

I'm sitting in one of my favorite haunts writing. Me: Ugh. Why is dialogue so hard? Barista: Why do you think I went to school for poetry?

Musk should be forced to use his personal wealth to clean it up. Clean the moon, you dead eyed haddock-faced bitch. What do you mean it's too hard? you were going to have a city living on Mars as soon as 8 years ago. Do it by Tuesday.

Now taking recommendations for noise cancelling headphones that work exceptionally well on airplanes. A bit of engine noise is good, but I need something capable of drowning out a herd of screaming 3 year olds.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.
