Why am I so unimpressed by these strikes? Israel and the US have failed to target significant elements of Iran's nuclear materials and production infrastructure. RISING LION and MIDNIGHT HAMMER are tactically brilliant, but may turn out to be strategic failures. 🧵 1/17

1/ Here’s the line of questioning I hope the MSM takes when WH officials or R’s come on their shows and insist that POTUS had to launch this strike: 1) Iran wasn’t within weeks of having a nuclear weapon. Netanyahu has been saying this for decades (roll tape).

2/ The DNI testified under oath just weeks ago that Iran didn’t have this capability(roll tape). 2) Under what legal authority did Trump launch this strike? This is clearly an act of war and Congress didn’t declare war. The US was not under imminent threat (see 1 above).

3/ 3) Trump claims that Iran can’t have a nuclear weapon but he canceled the JCPOA treaty that was preventing that from happening. His maximalist pressure campaign failed. Isn’t this a case of the arsonist wanting applause for putting out the fire he started?!

THIS JUST HAPPENED: Brad Lander walked through the fire, got burned, and came back with a fucking gasoline can. ICE arrested him — now he’s escorting migrants right past them, again. Most politicians wouldn’t show up. He showed out.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

And people ask what’s the big deal if Trump nominees just do what the boss wants?!….

Ashton Pittman@ashtonpittman.bsky.social

National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard was under oath when she told Congress in March that Iran was not building a nuclear weapon. But now that Trump claims otherwise as he pushes to join Israel's attack, she says they're "on the same page" and claims the media misconstrued her testimony.

To paraphrase a Jesuit saying: “A world view that can’t stand up to the scrutiny of other ideas, is not a world view worth having.”

What's happening to libraries in Florida should frighten everyone. Spurred on by Moms For Liberty, the AG is threatening librarians with felonies for stocking LGBTQ+ books and overruling established processes for removing "harmful" material. It's a full on censorship campaign by the government.

In the spring of 2008, I feared America was on the verge of war with Iran — and, believing that it’s good style to get to know people before you bomb them, I made “Rick Steves’ Iran,” a one-hour special that could (and would) only debut on PBS. Sadly, this special has become pertinent again today.

Lander just got detained by federal agents as he tried to escort a man out of the courtroom. Lander was taken in an elevator with masked agents, along with one member of his NYPD security detail.

The Minnesota assassin appears to be a hate-filled right winger. So can we stop walking on eggshells about MAGA's legitimization of political violence? Yes, Republicans have also been the target of inexcusable violence, but this isn't a "both sides" issue. 1/ A🧵on the danger.

Some thoughts about the military parade in my hometown of Washington DC today -- specifically, the route. Military parades in DC are quite rare. But when they happen, they have always begun, symbolically and geographically, at the Capitol and moved outward. 1/

Donald Trump and his fascist movement fetishize political violence and treat it like an acceptable form of discourse. This is the result. These people want to kill their opposition. And they feel justified in doing so bc they exist in a conspiracy unreality. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Sen. Alex Padilla, who was just forcibly removed from a DHS press conference, is the ranking member of Judiciary’s subcommittee on immigration, citizenship, and border safety, which has “oversight of federal agencies with citizenship, asylum, refugee, and immigration enforcement responsibilities.”

@schumer.senate.gov @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social What are you going to do about this? We need you to use every lever possible to grind Trump’s agenda to a halt. We need a constant stream of filibusters and floor speeches until the American people understand that this is authoritarianism.

A few words about “peaceful protests.” 1. At least 5% of people are uncontrollable assholes and will behave badly in any situation, let alone a high-tension one. So a large protest without ANYONE throwing shit, yelling slurs or for violence, etc. is likely not achievable. /1

We don’t need to back off the American Gestapo and we don’t need to respect its agents. People exercising state violence are not entitled to anonymity. Nor are the people directing the state violence.

MIKE JOHNSON: From the people who mandated mask wearing for years, it's absurd. They need to back off ICE & respect our agents Q: So you're ok w/agents not identifying themselves when they're arresting migrants? J: Why, so they can target them? So they can put names and faces online and dox them?

THIS is why due process matters. Because when ICE has to actually prove to an independent adjudicator whether someone is actually a member of a gang or not, they often fall flat on their face and judges are SHOCKED at how ramshackle and shoddy ICE's work on this stuff is. They get it wrong a LOT!

I can't stress enough how wrong and disingenuous the most recent wave of COVID revisionism is. The *only period* when Democratic counties had higher death rates was April-May 2020. From June 2020 onwards, Republican laxity and denialism were the most powerful force driving deaths.

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

And they never argue that the mistake was not to force more people to get vaccinated, which is what caused the second wave of maskings, lockdowns and cautions during the delta wave, where a huge % of people killed were either unvaccinated or caught the virus from unvaccinated people.
