I'm not sure how much more blatant it can get that these guys are looting the federal government and then pointing over there and saying "look what THOSE BLACK PEOPLE ARE GETTING AWAY WITH!!!" bsky.app/profile/atru...

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Stephen Miller claims Somali-Americans in Minnesota are "buying Mercedes, buying BMWs, they buy a nice house, all their kids fly first class all over the world" (This is a lie!)

This is something that should be obvious. The South is already the economic & population center of the country and that's only increasing over time. Republicans know how important it is, that's why they're going all in on gerrymandering it. Democrats have to step up now or they'll regret it later

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Warnock: "I worry that Democrats are missing a real opportunity to invest in a serious & sustained way in the South. If we would just lean in and stay in through the election & after the election, the kind of victory you saw us achieve here in Georgia, it is achievable in a place like Mississippi."

"If these people take over Congress, they're going to use its powers exactly how the Founders intended! Can you imagine that? Congress doing its job?! Heaven forfend!"

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Mike Johnson threatens us with a good time: "If this group took over, they would turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body. They'd spend every day investigating the president, the first family, the cabinet, donors to the party, leaders of business ... "

Self-aggrandizing halfwits going back at least to Plato have seen people disagree with them, decided that means democracy is a failure, and come to the conclusion that people with good ideas (meaning theirs) should just be given absolute power because they trust themselves to never do anything wrong

Gil Durán@gilduran.com

“Democracy has been hailed as, like, the holy grail for the last couple hundred years, but democracies are inefficient,” said the crypto billionaire. “If you get a benevolent dictator, it’s actually extremely efficient." Hmm, where have I heard this before? www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/b...

What an impressive set of self-congratulatory mental gymnastics. Everyone on bluesky was falling over each other to find the smuggest way to say they've never heard of the song, but as soon as someone points that out then they're secretly Bubba the racist (despite being an NYU grad & NPR contibutor)

I wonder why country fans are largely afraid of cultures that don't look or sound like they do...

Call me crazy but, seven months in, that we're still not reporting, "HOLY SHIT why won't Trump appoint real experts to negotiate with Iran instead of his family and his crypto business partner" is part of why we're here.

emptywheel@emptywheel.bsky.social

Headline, subhed, and photo: Real government officials are going to engage with Iran. 5¶¶ in: Did we say "aides"? I'm sorry, we meant Trump's flunky son-in-law and his developer buddy, but we won't tell you Witkoff's just his developer buddy. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/u...

Happy 60th birthday to Star Trek. It's too bad it disappeared forever ten years ago and they never made anything after that, but it's probably for the best.

Steve and Dave's@steveanddaves1.bsky.social

Star Trek – created by Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991) – premiered this evening in 1966 on NBC. The opening (bolstered by Alexander Courage’s magnificent theme) was something to behold in this era. Star Trek managed to hang on for three seasons (79 original episodes) – & became a cultural touchstone.

So much of online discourse is semantic arguments between people who make up their own definitions for words. Like this frankly embarrassing collection of posts and replies about "rural culture" where everyone is clearly talking about people who live in places like Dallas or Nashville

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

A really weird irony about the "authenticity" debate wrt rural volk vs cosmopolitan elites is that the actual culture of rural red state America in the 2020s is not actually authentic in any meaningful way?

Or, more accurately, they're openly talking about people who live in the suburbs of those cities instead of actual rural areas. A city with that's 5 miles away from downtown Atlanta and one that's 5 hours away aren't going to be that much alike even if the population is the same

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

Yes. "Rurality" is for many Americans just a costume they put on! bsky.app/profile/mike...

I can’t really articulate why, but Kevin Smith doing a Marvel/Star Wars crossover feels like Tim Burton directing Alice in Wonderland. It’s like something designed in a lab to make sure nothing interesting happens.

Asher HELLbein@asherelbein.bsky.social

Genuinely shocking to me that it took this long after the aquisition for someone to fire this gun. Somewhat less shocking -- but very disappointing -- is the fact that the person deputized to do so is Kevin Smith

I don't see how anybody can watch this and think this guy'll be president. You need that secret sauce to break out if a crowded primary, and this man if profoundly sauceless. Even when he's saying the right things (by copying them from others) he's still so bored even the audience is barely excited

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Newsom: "That $400m Qatari plane? That's not a $400m gift. It cost you $936m. That was what was appropriated as he's cutting food stamps and cutting your Medicaid. He put a billion dollars in the Pentagon budget to retrofit his private plane because that's going with him after the presidency ... "

"It's clear he learned from last time" is one of the few accusations you can't reasonably make about Trump. He doesn't suddenly have more authority, more men, or more loyalty than he did last week, or in 2020 for that matter, to pull off the kind of coup I see people on here keep fretting over

This is a campaign video posted by the Jon Ossoff for Senate in Georgia YouTube account over a year ago. It has garnered only 30,000 views on YouTube. I'm sharing this on BlueSky because I believe it's some of the best Democratic messaging that I've ever seen, and I think it deserves more views.

I have said repeatedly that Russell Vought should be impeached. Congress appropriates and this is a high crime against its powers under Article I. The most important thing DOGE did was take over the appropriations pipes at Treasury. If you wanted to close USAID and CFPB pass a bill.

This post is a perfect indication of the REAL issue here, the idea that being educated/cultured and talking in plain English are mutually exclusive. Obama's a great example of that being wrong since I don't think anybody would argue that he isn't smart, he just doesn't try to prove it when he talks

This post is unavailable.

Anyone who thinks it's anti-intellectualism when you tell others (particularly politicians) to speak plainly are telling on themselves that they think using $5 words means you're smart and the more of them you use the smarter you are, which speaks to a very specific kind of elitism you see online

And that's not to say politicians can't ever use big words, but the idea that it's some sign of intellectual decay that politicians today aren't pretending to be politicians from 200 years ago (who were pretending to be politicians from 2000 years ago) is the exact elitism that's at issue here

In the 24 hours since the Supreme Court's majority ruled to demolish the Voting Rights Act's remaining protections, Louisiana and Tennessee have already signaled that they'll redraw their congressional maps with the clear effect of shutting Black voters out.

To be clear, this is not a problem with "the south," Republicans everywhere hate minorities and would do whatever it takes to keep them from voting. The only reason you don't see this in heavily republican states elsewhere like Utah or the Dakotas is because hardly any non-white people live there

Nathan Goldwag@goldwagnathan.bsky.social

Multiracial democracy in the American South has briefly existed twice in American history, both times enforced from outside, and both times has lapsed the instant the rest of the country lost interest.

"You can only challenge the racial gerrymander if you preserve the partisan gerrymander that was the reason for the racial gerrymander" is tortured logic befitting Redemption or Jim Crow. The court effectively deemed the VRA and the 15th Amendment unconstitutional while pretending they didn't

Michael Li (李之樸)@mcpli.bsky.social

The utter incoherence of Callais is captured in this paragraph (pg. 36). Under Callais, plaintiffs have to show you could draw a Black-majority district that would elect Julia Letlow, a white Republican. That defeats the purpose of the claim, which is to end vote dilution.

It's weird seeing otherwise normal people reacting to encroaching surveillance by going full "If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear" the moment they get to call somebody carbrained

Perhaps Magyar's most important promise, and the one that certainly resonates with voters: "never again a country without consequences!" The crowd chants: "To prison! To prison!" [with the corrupt officials of the outgoing government]

I fully think Elon believes the "Soros bucks" stuff is true and is just mad that he hasn't been able to do it too.
