Tired: Celebrating 1776 by giving guys attacking America $1.776 billion Wired: Celebrating 250 years by giving Iran $25,000,000,000

NYT reporting that a proposed Trump-backed memorandum with Iran would reportedly release $25 billion in frozen Iranian assets www.nytimes.com/live/2026/05...

NATO countries called upon to ensure safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz might propose a deal like this to Trump. - There should be no tolls. But as the US has conceded that already, second best is that at least Omani tolls are waived. But ...

- Only countries that are paying their due to support Ukraine (as a percentage of GDP) get to pick ships where tolls are waived. - All other tolls are collected by Oman and sent directly to Ukraine (minus expenses for managing the tolls perhaps). Trump would get very uninterested at that point.

On another note, just imagine travelling back in time to 2012 and showing this to your average Washington analyst alongside pictures of that Jewish-Ukrainian comedian and the leader of the Syrian Al Qaeda splinter group negotiating arms and trade deals in Damascus

It's a 50/50 coin flip as to whether it is TACO Tuesday or whether Trump is now so high on his own echo chamber supply after the rescue op that he goes for the next escalation

Have thought about the probability of this (nuking Iran): Talk of "unconditional surrender" sounds eerie. Probability that Trump would bring it up goes to 1 over time (if it isn't there already). Conditional probability Hegseth would get onboard = 1. Now what could stop it? ...

Could be connected: Hegseth wants somethng extra-brutal because he is under pressure from Trump or as an order from him. Military leadership pushes back. Worst case: Trump's one-pager on world history has a bullet point: "Hiroshima & Nagasaki = unconditional surrender."

PPPS: Meant "But then Hegseth could purge them until he has promoted a bunch of loser careerists to the top posts who go along." Also thanks to Trump voters for having to put my hope on people like Gabbard, RFK or MTG.

PPPPS: One way it could also get derailed would be delays long enough that Trump TACOs before that, moves his focus to something else, etc. Would also lower the probability. But then, once the idea comes from above, it should be hard to wiggle out, just the normal indecision making of the admin.

PS: Would rather not think through what the knock-on effects of such a decision might be. Pretty likely Putin would take it as a precedent. And thanks to everybody in the US who voted against "warmonger" Harris, so I have to think this through.

PPS: Are we seeing indications for such a course at the moment? Some things fit, but inconclusive in my view. My hunch is there would be leaks. 100% clean on opsec unlikely. Foreign intelligence would also know about it. We have not seen anything so far, so that would contradict it to some extent.

(4) Military leadership (and that might be the next step if plans are not leaked or shared). My guess is they'd mostly be appalled and push back, some even on the brink of refusal. But then could purge them until he has a promoted a bunch of loser careerists to the top posts who go along.

Best strategy to derail it might be to come up with some other ugly thing, borderline warcrimey, a super-macho Wunderwaffe and try to win Hegseth over. Probabilty it would end at this stage: moderately high, but not a given. Probability it isn't stopped at any stage: low, but non-negligible.

(2) Someone leaking it to the media, pushback from the public. Might do it. But depends on where the chips fall. If Fox gets behind the idea or opposes it that would matter. Otherwise even counterproductive if it comes from the wrong people. Moderate probabilty that would work.

(3) GOP: I'd expect the likes of MTG to oppose it, but they have fallen out with Trump anyway. Graham? Maybe. GOP in Congress in general? Could work. But then while they must understand how Trump is dragging them down, they have not mustered any courage on anything. Probabilty low to moderate.

(1) Cabinet: Rubio might understand the problem. But then my interpretation is that the Iran war is some Miller-Hegseth project to outflank him, and he is happy to see them fail. Bessent? I have a suspicion that he is smart enough to play dumb, might also get the point. But stick his head out?

Weirdly I would think that Gabbard might oppose it. RFK to protect the legacy of his family? Like Gabbard, he is crazy enough to happen on the right answer here. Otherwise: the rest will go along and some even blithely. Probablity non-zero, but very low, the cabinet would stop it.

Having failed to secure the Snickers or M&Ms that were my original objectives, sources tell the Washington Post I will now be refocusing all energy on extracating my hand from where it is stuck inside the vending machine and restoring said machine to the working order it was in prior to my arrival.

Just guessing how it developed: Israel had the intelligence to take out Khamanei (plus others plus critical infrastructure re: nuclear program/ballistic missiles), wanted to do a limited strike out of the blue. So they ask the US for backing. Have to act now or the intelligence becomes useless. ...

Belatedly, the admin realizes they forgot to think about almost everything, like Iran striking out at the Gulf states & US bases in the region. Regime does not collapse immediately. Who knew they had Shaheds? And how do you intercept them? So they're now trying to cobble something together.

And they are really grateful at least Israel has a plan when they don't have one. The main challenge now is to save face, blame others for failures as polls show it is not popular. With more support from allies (that were kept in the dark), it would have been a huge success? Obama? Hunter Biden?

Can't agree on anything: boots on the ground and not put boots on the ground because that is toxic even with their base. Do regime change, but also not do regime change because that is toxic even with their base, too. Also perfect opsec where they alert Iran with a megaphone something is imminent.

The Israeli side gets nervous: Time is running out, can't wait much longer. Ironically, the ham-fisted US approach puts Iran at ease because they can't imagine such disastrous planning. Israel has to wait until the BIG ships are there. Then they do their thing and the US tags along. ...

Enter the clowns. While the idea would be that the US use their veto in the UNSC, pressure the Gulf States to allow Israel into their airspace, etc. - it is big FOMO in Washington. Trump has to be the real winner. So they delay the Israeli operation to conjure up one of their own. ....

Hegseth wants to send BIG ships, easy to win Trump over. Jared & Steve offer their expertise with failed negotiations. The CIA has a few ideas what to bomb. The prince convinces them the regime will collapse by itself, so they don't have to do anything. And surely Israel has a plan. ...

Wow, was not aware of how early it started, that it went up massively against Canada already under Biden. I guess the view of Europe is coming down from a peak during Trump I. Also weird how there's some traction with Democrats who I'd have expected to polarize in the opposite direction.

Dave Keating@davekeating.substack.com

And the trend goes both ways, by the way. The US government is telling Americans to hate Europeans and Canadians. And many have dutifully changed their opinions.

PS: Someone in the comments makes a good point. You can also answer "unfriendly" as a matter of fact. It is true that Canadians or Europeans have become unfriendly, but as a reaction. Does not mean you have to endorse the unfriendliness from the US side. However, this does not work for "enemy."

Just my personal experience. For many years, I was willing to engage with an American perspective, glossed over the ignorance with: Maybe there's a kernel of truth in it. By now, it is: Please add an "unsubscribe" button. It's like trying to get a second opinion from Scientology or Bigfoot hunters.

On the upside, it will make even those organizations suspect that accidentally align with their goals without receiving money. Would compare it to how it was with Soviet front organizations. Plus once the money stops, the whole sector collapses and never comes back as it is addicted to the inflows.

Belately, the administration is beginning to realize how much soft power the US used to have and that they have totally shredded it. Now it is: Oh, let's buy some back. - No, that's not how this works. I can do without the condescension of someone trying to kick me around.

PS: And it is not just narrowly MAGA that has tanked with me. Also seeing the NYT disaster, the lame response of people who have freedom in their genes when it is taken away, bla bla bla. Not everybody, some remain worth engaging with, but I am now extremely selective.
