The satellite that watches the eastern United States for storms went blind for 20 hours in July. NOAA cannot yet say why. Its backup sits weeks away from taking over. This is what a warning system looks like after the people who ran it were cut and its research arm marked for the axe.

Given the news that Trump has just appointed Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence, it feels timely to revisit the three different episodes of financial impropriety by Pulte that I’ve reported on in the just last six months! Let’s recap:/1

NEW: lots of you have sent me this article asking for my thoughts. I’ve been able to confirm it. Just as she says, Trump’s administration is staging vote.gov on a non-government cloudflare account under the EOP where there’s no oversight or accounting. 1/ open.substack.com/pub/thedreyd...

Why is Trump so enthusiastic about destroying Iranian civilian infrastructure? It won’t win the war. It is likely for another reason: to provoke an Iranian response that Trump can use for his own purposes. (2/17)

I want to be clear: it would literally be IMPOSSIBLE to conduct a legitimate election in WA state in November 2026 in compliance with the SAVE Act. We cannot do it. No way, no how. Same for OR and other vote-by-mail states. Better to refuse to comply and confront the Constitutional crisis head on.

“He does not consider the wider implications of his decisions. He does not take responsibility when these decisions go wrong. Instead, he acts on whim and impulse, and when he changes his mind—when he feels new whims and new impulses—he simply lies about whatever he said or did before.” 👏👏👏 Anne!

Trump does not think strategically, historically, geographically, or even rationally. He does not connect actions he takes on one day to events that occur weeks later. Allied leaders know that if they help him in the Gulf, he won't be grateful, or even remember www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Yes. And we have to talk about this now, because talking about it is the first step to making it seem like a callous crime rather than a surprising emergency.

In competitive authoritarianism (US right now) there's often a "loyal opposition" that's essential to the regime. They are so wedded to "decorum," they go along with rites & rituals that help regime prop up veneer of normalcy, undermining clear view of regimes actions & aims.
