As I watch the Israeli election results from the outside, I am struck by two realities. The elections are, indeed, very high stakes. At the same time, on the key issues that are at the center of external concerns about Israel: apartheid and genocide, there is perhaps less here than meets the eye

nytimes.comA Trump Die-Hard Is Suddenly at Risk in an Upstate G.O.P. District (Gift Article)Blake Gendebien, a Democratic dairy farmer, is trying to flip a House seat in upstate New York, and his opponent’s loyalty to President Trump may be helping.

Mr. Gendebien, 49, a second-generation dairy farmer, attributed the tightening of the race to his message of bringing down fuel and fertilizer costs resonating with voters. “We’re thrilled we’re hitting all the right notes,” he said in an interview last week.

I agree with this in broad strokes, but the underlying connective tissue here is more of a character problem: this administration is simply bad at authoritarianism. Their policy judgment and execution has been ham-handed and incompetent because *they* are ham-handed and incompetent

"Balance" And the GOP has been playing the mainstream media since the Nixon era.

David Roberts@volts.wtf

The political media is visibly chafing at the current situation, where Republicans are glaringly awful, fucking everything up, running deviant candidates everyone hates, and Dems are just being normal & winning. The force is out of balance. They are viscerally eager to go after Dems about something.

In case anyone thought Israel's preference for far-right authoritarian leaders like Orban, Bolsonaro, Modi and Milei would end if Netanyahu gets voted out, think again. It's baked in now for a variety of reasons. The only illiberal authoritarian they don't like is Erdogan.

I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

I mean, I think it is pretty clear at this point that they are just attention whores who really don't care about much of anything beyond "engagement"
