Dark lol at doing a curiosity gap headline for this. MLB spam "Texas Rangers reach minor league deal with former Blue Jays pitcher" ass. Respect yourself a little bit.

I was starting to feel bad about entering middle age but hey, no worries! I've apparently got *many* years of youth left in which to perform indiscretions.

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

So hard to pick a favorite part of this article. Pretending that sending unsolicited dick pics at 53 was a “youthful indiscretion” is good, but don’t sleep on the argument that his wife forgave him for subjecting other women to unwanted nude photos so everyone else should too

what is extra depressing is that this is so common that it’s clear “oh thank god this guy isn’t going to send me unsolicited dick pics” is a point that a lot of women reach with guys that should be worth zero points! that should be baseline!

the actual reason is that the media likes Trump and wants to help him. They didn't like Hillary and they didn't like Biden and wanted to hurt them. That explains why Hillary's emails was covered as a nuclear-level scandal and "Trump is a violent rapist who is best friends with Jeff Epstein" isn't

one of the most surprising lessons of You Can See Anything, which you don't get until the film is like halfway over, is the importance of a long-term skin care regimen

Not every occurance in a sports event should be a "lets check the tape in ultra slow motion" opportunity for litigation. Sometimes just have an experienced, knowledgable guy who was watching it make a determination.

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

like this? this is the whole logic of deplatforming, en toto. if you were wondering why center-right liberals and blackshirts were horrified by deplatforming as a strategy and quailed about 'cancel culture', this is why: because it works.

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.

There's no reforming this; it needs to be torn up by the root. Police departments *must* be reformed (declawed) and ICE must be destroyed

Chris Ingraham@cingraham.bsky.social

Kavanaugh stops in action: ICE tackled a non-verbal kid near his school, left him with injuries requiring surgery, and then left the scene when they realized he wasn't the person they were looking for www.independent.com/2026/10/23/i...

"California hates cars" is such an obvious tell that somebody watches too much TV/is too online. It's so obviously untrue! Driving is what connects Californians. It's why they'll freely give directions; they are fellow motorists

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Larry Kudlow, interviewing Trump, claims that Californians "hate cars"

Holy shit go see Wildwood. It's a literally astonishing work of art and it's a good movie with fantastic performances

These wnba finals have been such bully ball. It's probably great to be there but it's admittedly not the best TV

I say this all the time: media access. If you ever think "man there's no good music/movies/tv anymore" I want you to know that it's a skill issue on your part

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Genuinely I've never understood why people like bigot chicken. They think "pickle" counts as a spice! It's just so many sacrifices to the food gods - it's fast food, it's barely seasoned, and the owners are shithead bigots

When I got my masters in 2015, people asked the same thing about a PhD. Meanwhile, an advisor of mine was the only new tenure prof I had met and his stories were not encouraging. He was out of the academy w/in 5 years. I love history, but there's just no money in it

Patrick Wyman@patrickwyman.bsky.social

I did the math on my rough chances of getting a tenure-track job in my field of history in 2013. Best case, it was about 6 percent, so I essentially gave up on academia and pursued other things. Writing MMA articles for a couple grand a month was a wildly more promising career path.

yes. and this is why people need to can it with the "we can't afford XYZ because of Trump" routine I hear on here sometimes. we could dial up the tax take by 10 points of GDP and not even be close to the Nordics

Bobby Kogan@bbkogan.bsky.social

I also think this is a very powerful graph. Most people don't know it, but the US is a *very* low-tax country. We tax below average and we spend below average, among rich nations. Fixing our fiscal situation entirely through taxes would still leave us *very* low tax. bsky.app/profile/bren...

As much as I joke about it: I want to defend Michelle Obama’s when they go low, we go high: she was simply noting Black women in public life cannot be angry without consequence. But what is also clear—Lisa Cook is a mild-mannered economist—for a set of people—black woman cannot be in public life.

Good morning, folks. My latest essay for @atrupar.com Public Notice is out. In it, I argue that, to succeed, a new generation of Dem fighters must *heed* one party mantra…but, more importantly, *ignore* two others: open.substack.com/pub/aaronrup...

Good read. When people ask if Japanese is a hard language to learn, I always say "it's more annoying than difficult" and this is why

Unseen Japan@unseenjapan.com

Most kanji carry two kinds of reading: on'yomi, borrowed from Chinese, and kun'yomi, the native Japanese word. 水 is sui, from Chinese, and mizu in Japanese. Why has Japanese kept this two-layered reading system that other languages dropped?

And finally keeping at it, year-in, year-out demands not ironic detachment but sincere, even 'cringe,' commitment - of the kind that feels like vulnerability. It is not enough to be angry all the time, you must also be grieved and sorrowful and even sometimes joyous too.

Travis Knight is the best rich kid: the kind who finds a niche passion and spends all of daddy's money on it. These are the only ones that should get a break on an inheritance tax

Rory Blank@roryblank.bsky.social

I mean I don't know that Travis Knight, Nike scion, is hurting for money, but Laika movies are extremely time and labor intensive endeavors and they spent $100 million dollars making a stop motion movie, and by they, I mean also he's the producer and head of the company that produced it.

I genuinely think part of Trump's magic is he is so shameless that he just *asks* for stuff. The rest of us, those capable of shame, wouldn't even consider it an option. This jerk thinks it's a secret trick to getting what he wants and, sadly, he's kinda right

Too many democrats are still fighting off the ghosts of Ronald Reagan. Education funding and the concept of government services being a net good are the biggest, but far from only, facets of this

Do Democrats not see that the effort to build civic centers using taxpayer dollars and private funding at public universities is an effort to shape future voting preferences against them? Why aren’t rich Democrats counter the Right and funding normal humanities departments?
