*Long sigh* Yeah it seems like this is exactly what's up, actually. This new "NaNoWriMo" 2.0 is AI all the way. prowritingaid.com/novel-november Their website tries *real* hard not to mention AI, but then you catch stuff like, "...ran it through Plot Analysis" and yeah that's kind of a giveaway.

The Marge Simpson "that's true but he shouldn't say it" meme gets used ironically but it's a pretty normal social convention that there are true things you don't say to people in rough emotional states

Sometimes I feel like I'm useless as a lawyer and contribute nothing and then I remember that even if I AM a garbage lawyer and my complaint ends up being pretty low quality I'm still forcing ICE to spend time and resources responding to it. So that's pretty nice. Also, you know. Imposter syndrome

Too many trans women hide behind the various abuses we suffered while growing up and the TERF phrase “socialized male” in order to avoid unlearning toxic traits patriarchal society inculcated in us.

what is an *actual*, *specific* opinion that you hold that will be unpopular on bluesky ? Mine is that Javier Milei is horrible but probably did a better job in fixing Argentina’s hyperinflation crisis than any of his opponents would have

Holy shit. That really was a year, wasn’t it?

Why is AI-generated language so hard to understand?

arxiv.orgWhy is AI-generated language so hard to understand? There is a widespread sense that AI-generated text has recently become harder to understand. In this study, we investigate a set of psycholinguistic features that are known to correlate with human processing difficulty (e.g., object relative clauses, long syntactic dependencies, low-frequency n-grams). Using a novel corpus of AI-generated text across diverse domains, we find that AI models use these difficult features more often than paraphrases generated by round-trip translation. Compared with human writing, all nine frontier and near-frontier models use more inanimate subjects with animate verbs and more low-frequency n-grams, and most also use longer dependencies, more stacked nouns, and more reduced object relatives in conversation; we also demonstrate substantial variation across model families. We propose and test a hypothesis as to why: while human language is optimized for successful communication, AI-generated text is increasingly optimized for other goals like math, code, and reasoning, in which there is a pressure for \textit{information density} rather than successful communication. We provide a proof-of-concept for this hypothesis by fine-tuning a language model under a length penalty, which leads to a divergence from human-like linguistic behavior. Our findings highlight the axes of misalignment between linguistic processing demands in humans and LLMs, and point toward possible remedies.

I’m an AI skeptic verging on an AI hater, but I haven’t gone back in time and retroactively started to despise Google Translate. This is a horrible move from the moderators and should be slapped down by Reddit admins.

hooooo boy we don't like this no we don't > If you don't speak English, you need to find a different community. We cannot distinguish between AI-written and AI-translated. Since you don't speak English, you can't even verify yourself if it translated correctly. www.reddit.com/r/opensource...

yeh tbh if AI is so great you should be proud of it, you should disclose it everywhere and put a bunch of stickers yourself that you used it for your project showing everyone how cool and cutting edge you are, no? like, it's the future right? you love it right??

Anyway I still think the most trans ttrpg ever made is CHANGELING THE LOST and if you disagree with me that’s totally fine and I absolutely understand your viewpoint but you need to understand that you’re wrong

Every aspect of life as a gay man is unimaginably better than it was when I was born in the mid 80s. We beat the plague that was killing us by the hundreds of thousands and then won broad social and civic equality.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

This is my innate response to sexuality in ttrpgs. I can think of one character I RPed who was not either explicitly or functionally aroace in the past decade. It makes for pretty funny interactions with people, though.

“So your character gets locked in a dog kennel.” “That just seems uncomfortable” “It’s degrading and hot” “But my character isn’t into any of that” “But they’re embarrassed” “I mean yeah I guess but they’re probably mostly just unhappy and hungry?” “It’s sexy!” “It’s not sexy” “Is too” “no”

Not as good as last year’s jaunty crawfish but still quite nice as a mark of Civic Participation™️

I'm reminded of Hogfather, and Terry Pratchett's observation kids understand that stories have blood. It's the parents, the adults, who avert their eyes, who sanitize these stories for themselves.

The best children's writers (aka the ones kids like and remember fondly) know childhood isn't a perfect paradise and write accordingly. The ones parents like most and kids don't pretend it is.

I don’t want to hear people say “eat the rich” so much as I want to hear them say, to the rich, “To the law, your money is of no consequence whatsoever. It will shield you from the law the same way empty air would shield you from a blade: it is irrelevant. No favors, no exceptions.”

“Don’t worry, Ravna. We’ll dedicate part of R00 to this mission. If their antenna swarm works properly, the Riders should have a thirty Kb/s link to Relay.“ -A FIRE UPON THE DEEP by Vernor Vinge Great book, but the little anachronisms of the early 90s are both delightful and a bit sobering.

And finally keeping at it, year-in, year-out demands not ironic detachment but sincere, even 'cringe,' commitment - of the kind that feels like vulnerability. It is not enough to be angry all the time, you must also be grieved and sorrowful and even sometimes joyous too.

It turns out that choosing the lesser of two evils is, in fact, a moral imperative. And some folks want to wait for the Revolutionary Perfect, but I would equally challenge them to demonstrate a single time where a 'start from nothing, year-0' revolution has turned out well for most people.

One thing AI companies have got to stop doing if they want wider adoption is to give people free tiers that are markedly worse than what you get for paid. “No, no, AI works great if you prompt it in all the ways I have and shell out however much a month I do for the frontier model” is not a sell.

A strong argument that LLMs aren’t nearly as bright as their proponents claim is that they’ve been steadfastly unable to get basic marketing concepts like “don’t give out free food samples with mold on them” down pat

This minithread brought to you by my idle musings on what it would take for me to use LLMs as an adjunct to BARBRI upon moving to another state and taking another bar exam.

I swear to god, where the hell does the "lawyer and attorney are different" thing come from? All three major models are regurgitating the claim, but there aren't any sources that really back it up. Even the ones the AI's cite when pushed don't really stand for that proposition.
