Every friend group has that one friend that's just a ghost that hasn't figured out they're dead yet. If you don't know who in your friend group is the ghost then I'm sorry buddy but I've got some bad news for you...

There's growing experimental evidence¹˒²˒³˒⁴ that LLMs are unusually good at talking people out of entrenched false beliefs and conspiracy theories. ¹ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39264999/ ² pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41179846/ ³ sciety.org/articles/act... ⁴ connecticut.adl.org/resources/re...

Unpopular opinion: LLMs are generally deradicalizing people whose beliefs are based on pure propaganda. I've been watching this happen slowly with some people I care about. ChatGPT is one of the reasons they finally accept that the NRA, OAN, and NewsMax are lying to them.

My fourth consecutive bedtime reading a book called Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site and I think I'm just about ready to come out against child literacy. I'm going to become the reverse Dolly Parton and devote my fortune to taking books away from children.

Not geography but I will never get over sitting next to a guy in the dining hall freshman year at an elite university bragging about how he kept kosher as he chowed down on bacon. But you're eating bacon, I said. "Bacon isn't pork," he said. That was 41 years ago and I hear it like it was yesterday.

I told my partner the common factor in songs I love to sing are archipelagos, music that hops around in intervals like islands, then remembered that it's arpeggios, and since I studied music he trusted me and I'm too proud to admit I'm wrong so I appreciate your help in sustaining this complex ruse.

One mathematician closing in on proving X. Another mathematician closing in on proving Y. X and Y together entail Z, famous million dollar conjecture. Each mathematician slows down their work, racing to be the slower, to earn the million dollars and life of acclaim.

When I was a kid, I thought that the way it worked was obvious. Now I have to think about it. I blame society

I write for a living and I do everything I can to avoid using “lay / lie.” It’s just too much pressure.

Thank cod

Trevor A. Branch@trevorabranch.bsky.social

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

This too. What I love about this one is it actually generates like an inverted version of the illusion where the lines (to me) appear at first glance to be equal lengths but aren’t.

No one actually has anything bad to say about the policies enacted by Caligula‘s horse-consul, so we have to assume that the old girl was a wise and just governor of men.

Reading about a painter called "The sodomite" who did a painting called "St Benedict repairs a Broken Colander through Prayer" where the saint is a side character because the actual focus of the fresco is a self portrait with a pet badger Iconic tbh en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Il_Sodoma

"Newton . . . has become for me wholly other, one of the tiny handful of supreme geniuses who have shaped the categories of the human intellect, a man not finally reducible to the criteria by which we comprehend our fellow beings," Richard Westfall

Pwnallthethings@pwnallthethings.bsky.social

tbh newton would be a bottom-10% tier researcher as a scientist today. He is (rightly) celebrated for his early work, but part of the /reason/ he is foundational is because his work was done in a far earlier era of science!
