I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
Steam Next Fest recommended demos thread, because why not. No GEN AI slop recs at all, and only fun interesting new stuff.
Highly recommend Home Paige from Steam Next Fest. One of those 3D platformers where once you grasp the mechanics, you can get zoomin. Has a lot of personality for such simplistic, but stylized art. I'm a fan. store.steampowered.com/app/4098960/...
Ladder Lad is maybe my favorite demo so far. You play as a lad, with a ladder. You can tilt the ladder, and climb, and feed frogs beetles. There is a zany fun narrator. The humor and charm is so great. It has THE SAUCE.
At Fate's End. An adventure game that reminds me of Disney or like Steven Universe but even more serious. Beautiful animation, but kind of clunky combat and investigation bits could use some QoL. Still, it's a worthwhile piece of art for sure.

Talaka - hand-drawn Brazilian mythology Dead Cells with Hades-like upgrades. Love the theme.
Moadra, a grim dark Metroidvania (emphasis on the Metroid bit) that instantly puts you into an interesting story and world where it feels like you're playing as a predator from Predator. Really high quality graphics and animations too. Game is out now, actually. Kinda steep at $25 compared to others

Demi and the Fractured Dream is a pretty cute 3D Zelda-like that feels like its going to be compact. Clearly wears its inspiration on it's sleeves and that's okay. Zelda slaps.
Last Moon is a top-down Zelda like (action RPG) that can be played in local co-op. Hand-drawn and reminds me a bit of the old Hobbit cartoon and/or Alex Kidd in a way. Seems pretty promising.

Hela: Of Mice & Magic is a cozy 4 player 3D platformer with mice wearing magical frog backpacks that sing and allow you to whip around the outdoors like Spiderman or something. Very cute and relaxing, and thankfully very sign posted if you want it to be.
Hellforged is a more graphically advanced Halls of Torment (which just got a new DLC today, btw) which is basically what if Diablo 2 was an extraction Survivors-like. Neat.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...
The only thing that trickles down are layoffs. Universal high income (that the AI tech bros preach) will never happen. Dragons don’t just decide to give out wealth.
I feel obliged to once again reiterate that lay offs and closures are not a reaction to the economy, but a failure of leadership. Each wave of closures and layoffs should be looked upon as a consequence of greed and incompetence. If you can't keep your people employed, you are bad at your job.

I also wanted to pull out a special part of the piece: fuck Jensen Huang. By forcing customers to take early delivery of GPUs to boost quarterly revenues, he artificially inflated the price of RAM and every consumer electronic. What he and his hyperscale paypigs have done is morally reprehensible.
Free newsletter: In July, Apollo Economist Torsten Slok said that "AI better work out, or we have a problem." Facing ever-growing high-interest debt, negative-EBITDA AI labs and $200bn+ in warehoused GPUs, that's exactly what the AI industry has. www.wheresyoured.at/ai-had-bette...
@paultassi.bsky.social Have you tried Mycopunk yet? The gunplay reminds me a lot of Destiny. And the way you unlock ‘perks’ for guns and grenades as random equippable drops is just so satisfying.

This one just left early access, and cheap at 50% off. Like a mash-up of Deep Rock Galactic & Helldivers, but your enemy are procedurally generated messes of fungal growths and industrial machinery with physics-based movement and locational damage. Tearing apart bosses limb from limb is pretty cool
Mycopunk Mutates out of Early Access to Bring Deep Rock Helldiving FPS Fun to All
Most video game journalists don’t have spines because all the ads on their sites are paid for by the publishers, and to be denied review copies in retaliation isn’t unheard of. Warner Bros. threatened to blacklist Destructoid at one point for our reporting on its misleading season pass statements.
Opinion: Xbox already has a marketing team and (unless I'm mistaken) journalists are not on its payroll A conveyer belt of toothless Asha Sharma profiles have shown one thing: reporters who get access must do better

Derelikt. Commits to the PS1 bit better than any other game I've played, up to including legally distinct boot logos and sounds, and a loading screen with a disc icon and I believe the sound effect of an optical drive loading. Really nails the Alien vibes too. store.steampowered.com/app/3810510/...
Guns 'n Goblins. A (singular?) tower defense incremental FPS Vampire Survivor's like. This game has the sauce. store.steampowered.com/app/4671750/...

Half Grip. A roguelike racing game where you have only a right hand. You basically manage steering, shifting, boost, manually loading bullets into your gun, and shooting other drivers. All in gritty PSX like graphics in first person. I promise it isn't half as stressful as it sounds. Real fun.
ALTEREDBLOOD+ [AB+] Ultrakill inspired FPS, story driven. You're a robot at the center of the known universe really super far in the future. The center of the universe is Mother. She built you to kill the rest of the surviving humans. You live and thrive on their blood. Enjoy.
