Wow, this is beautifully done. Encourage library & archive folks to take 20 minutes to explore this story and learn more about Indigenous cultural heritage—there's a lot here that's new to me! 📚
Travel across North America learn how the efforts of a new generation of digital librarians are returning indigenous knowledge to its rightful stewards. See The Map That Roared and much more in this digital story from LF intern Thomas Gagnon-van Leeuwen. www.libraryfutures.net/post/indigen...
IGNORE THEM
I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
When I try to explain to non-nerds how much our internet civilization depends on a few random smart people who maintain code libraries I wind up standing on chairs and yelling.
70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Just read this crucial, thoughtful new article by @mishiebhat.bsky.social. "Why Do Academic Librarians of Color Stay in the Profession?" is a great question to ask; the survey provides some surprising results. Extremely worth a read! 📚 muse.jhu.edu/article/1002...

I love this as an example for how to end something that's sprawling, complex, and beloved. Thoughtful stewardship of the digital materials, and celebrating what this organization did with a sense of pride and accomplishment, without any shame of the "if it's not forever it's a failure" trap. 💖
Today, we announced that HASTAC is closing as an interactive social network after 25+ years of innovative, exciting, and equitable learning, scholarship, and community focusing on technology and its impact on society. educational-cultural-institutions.hastac.hcommons.org/2026/09/29/s...

If you've got some time in the next few days, the September #Wikipedia editathon to show solidarity with the new Wikimedia union is behind its goal of editing 10,000 articles. You can help by registering, finding a relevant article, & making it a little better! 📚 meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:W...
Librarians are also very good at helping you obtain articles for free. Just ask them!
Have you ever tried to read a scientific journal article and been told “you don’t have access, pay to download this article?” Did you know that the author of that article gets $0 if you pay? Instead, you can email the author and ask for a free copy! I’d be delighted to help and answer questions!
Three library folks always worth listening to.
Government information was meant to be distributed, & libraries play a key role in making the public record available. On the Future Knowledge #podcast, Merrilee Proffitt, James Jacobs & Christopher Marcum discuss why preserving it matters. 🎧 futureknowledge.transistor.fm/episodes/the... 🧵
All of this. As the granddaughter of a 5th grade dropout and factory worker who managed to earn a PhD without mortgaging my future…I don’t know if my type of journey is even possible anymore.
Fascinating and sad. Tech capital enables the type of self-actualization and cultural knowledge for elites at the very same time as it destroys the possibility of achieving any of that for the masses. www.wsj.com/business/spa...
Dr. Cottom is correct. I’m in my 50s and at no point was Wikipedia considered “slop” in higher ed. Admittedly I was at a place (U of Illinois) with a strong cs program and good library school. But Wikipedia was considered in context of the human community around it.
This is not what slop refers to. I'm not being purely academic about this. The conflation does matter. Because this is a type of conglation that people do to make any reasonable critique of "A.I." seem overwrought. "Oh they said the same thing about the internet!" And it is not true.

Occasional reminder that Muslims were among the 1st responders, among those killed, & among those sent to fight our forever wars. That there could be any kind of ~criticism~ of NYC's Muslim mayor attending Fri's ceremony is grossest bigotry & dehumanization. It's a disgrace that reflects on us all.
This is somehow still going, and it’s not just a few random families now; it’s also a former mayor of NYC and governor of New York. There is, again, no way to reason to argue Mamdani shouldn’t attend this commemoration that isn’t fundamentally bigoted

New solo-authored paper from me - first in a while. "Digitization, Conflict, and Crisis: Institutional Urgency and Digital Cultural Heritage". Jan 26 I sat and wrote about the relationship between heritage digitisation and climate crisis. Then watched the world burn. muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/articl...
I spent a week with my mom earlier this month right after the elections. She is a dedicated MSNBC viewer and I can count on one hand the pundit rants that were *not* about Hasan Piker that entire week.
It’s mind-blowing that we have literal white nationalists in the White House carrying out unfathomably cruel, abusive, white nationalist policies, and the punditariat has spent the last two weeks debating if some people were too intemperate after a Black man was murdered by cops six years ago.

Major kudos to MIT, who just put out a report about AI on their campus that lucidly explains the threat posed by AI to cognition and the student experience, while at the same time prioritizes learning, students, and the value of education. 1/x aiandeducation.mit.edu/report/

NEW: For the second day, the Census Bureau's homepage, census.gov, features an unauthored report with analysis that @npr.org found was conducted not by career civil servants, but a team that included individuals affiliated with a President Trump-aligned think tank, the America First Policy Institute
I spend a decent amount of my time reading Census Bureau documentation 🤓 and this does not read like Census Bureau work.
Census issued a "study" claiming that 24,000 noncitizens voted in 2020. Unlike every other Census research publication, it was unsigned. Some other more subtle things missing too, like error bars (is 24k statistically different from 0?). If you have info about this study, please reach out.
Wondering how the end of project support at OSF will affect researchers….
#HigherEd #science #sciencesky #EduSky having difficulty complying w/ #openscience #openaccess mandates? Particularly as an #ECR or limited-funding researcher? Looking for a couple of panelists for a conference who can share their experience. DM me and share! #PublicHealth #publicPolicy
This is an excellent read.
OPINION: "As a politics scholar who has written about history and law, I believe that years from now, when Americans look back on Trump v. Barbara, it will be (Justice Ketanji Brown) Jackson, not (Chief Justice John) Roberts, whom they remember," Austin Sarat writes. buff.ly/BYmEhMa
The author notes Justice Brown’s reference to the conventions held by Black Americans leading up to the passage of the 14th amendment. There is an excellent DH resource that has made accessible those primary sources from the conventions.
It would have been great if the 404 piece included a conversation with just ONE librarian. In the meantime, it might be a good time to remind folks (or see for the first time) what consortial shared print agreements look like among libraries.
