I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

My first 5 TTRPGs: 1. D&D 3e 2. Warhammer FRP 2e 3. Pendragon 5e (my first "completed" campaign) 4. Star Wars d20 RPG (2002 Revised Edition) 5. D&D 4e

Dr. Emily Friedman@ecfriedman.com

First 5 TTRPGs played: 1. Vampire 2. in Nomine (hiatus I discussed yesterday with one of my doctoral committee members who played D&D & wondered if I had been secretly playing during my PhD. I had not.) 3. D&D 5e 4. Blades in the Dark 5. I truly do not remember? Like, total blank.

LRT: I both regret and resent everything I've come to know about the people and situation that prompted that tweet, not least the existence of the tattoo... but also yeah, that's definitely true about the "partner tattoo" thing.

I'm not going to join a pile-on here, but this was very much *not* the "immigration system before ICE." INS had lots of very serious problems, as did Border Patrol, but the Elian Gonzalez case was a HUGE outlier, the handling of which was so beyond the norm that it outraged millions of Americans.

There's a STRONG argument that Janet Reno cost Al Gore the 2000 election with the violence of the raid. And that's even with the caveat that Elian's uncle was a fascist fanatic who had kidnapped his nephew and threatened to shoot anyone who came to return him to his father.

But that's all beside the point. The reality is that, pre-2003, the American immigration system was flawed and inhumane in a lot of ways, but also substantively less violent and brutal in practice AND policy than ICE/CBP today (which are themselves also bad in all the ways INS was bad).

Cozy, competence-porn murder mysteries. Just a nice, comfortable story about killers who are definitely gonna get away with it because "this is what they do, and they're the best at what they do."

elevated snuff films are on their way out, cozy snuff films are going to be the next hot thing. people want low-conflict murders they can watch without stressing out too much

I'm only half-joking when I say I'd like a breakout category of "obligated to use" vs "choose to use." E.g., I "use" Facebook and LinkedIn but I'd rather not, I'm forced to use Facebook for local/school news and LinkedIn for professional news. I wonder how common that is.

If El-Sayed had gone “I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m not actually Muslim I’m fine with deporting them please vote for me” he would just look weak and convince no one. Anti-trans Dems are falling into the same trap.

Eyeballing Jack Reacher right now. Big guy, obviously, but I don't think he sees me coming. As a henchman, this is the sort of moment that makes or breaks your career. I think I should go for it.

FYI for my Massachusetts people: This is the way to vote on all of our (sometimes intentionally confusing) ballot measures this year. I'm also a No on 6, since I suspect it will get in the way of raising new revenues for environmental protection, rather than boost that protection sustainably.

Jonathan Cohn @jonathancohn.bsky.social

Early voting starts today in Massachusetts! Do you have a plan to vote?

LOL, and she doesn't even have the option of pivoting to the "I was cancelled by the woke mob!" grift, since even if she wanted to make hay out of getting criticized for "being incompetent" and "lying about being a lawyer," she couldn't w/out implicitly attacking Trump for firing her. LMAO.

Kyle Griffin@kylegriffin1.bsky.social

BREAKING NYT: Trump's new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, was fired Friday, after less than a week on the job, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Guys, even if this were real, which it's not (it's v. obviously a stripped-down, low weight model purpose built for this demo, not a road-ready car capable of this), a "flying car" is a vehicle for 2-6 people which can move freely in 3 dimensions. That's it. And we already have those...

Yahoo Finance@yahoofinance.com

"Flying cars are real!" 🚀 Elon Musk and Tesla showcase the new Roadster.

They're called helicopters. That's all a "flying car" is, in practical terms. A helicopter. The people who could afford this (again, extremely fake) car already have unfettered access to that experience. And a world where everyone took helicopters everywhere would be a goddamn nightmare.

Look, I'm not a Dodgers hater by any means, but we do need them to get swept out of the playoffs to deny the owners the "LA bought a title!" argument they plan on using for labor-disciplining changes in the next CBA negotiation.

It's right to point out he was never a "genius" about anything, not even nicknames, but he did used to be basically competent at shit talking his opponents, in a way that made him an apex predator among the especially charmless dorks of professional politics.

Elizabeth Picciuto@epicciuto.bsky.social

Remember when everyone said he was a secret genius at nicknames?

The nicknames, in particular, used to be pretty effective because they pointed at what people already didn't like about the person. Crooked Hillary ("the Clintons are corrupt"), Lyin' Ted ("Cruz is a viscerally untrustworthy slimeball"), Lil' Marco ("Rubio is a fundamentally unserious person.")

The nicknames people tried to do in response ("Dangerous Don," et al.) fell flat because the people who wrote them lacked even the basic showman's instinct that Trump had. Now that's been lost to his advancing dementia, so he's fumbling around with weak slop like "I call him Muhammad."

Is this the special where he bombed at the actual taping and re-shoot so hard that he had a severe mental health episode after? Or did he shoot something else since then?

W.E.D.em Boyz@leftistwonk.bsky.social

This is this promotional material that Netflix is using for Theo Von’s new special. Who is laughing at this?

Every clip I've ever seen (against my will) from a DW movie, it's been immediately obvious that everyone involved was previously a "failed filmmaker/writer/etc." Just a series of incompetently constructed shots, high school student film dialogue, and incomprehensible editing.

This is part of the reason why every Medievalist's favorite Medieval movie is 'A Knight's Tale.' Because it's so stylized that nobody in the non-expert press would call it "accurate," which gives the experts room to gush about how well it portrays the *spirit* of the era.

Cartogriffi@cartogriffi.bsky.social

I attended a medievalist conference this past summer, and I was curious if folks were going to be nitpicking such details in games. In general they were very chill about it - unless the media made a big deal about accuracy. That's when the criticism came out, albeit fairly playfully.

It seems pretty clear at this point that the Twitter Nazis running this attempted ratfucking were operating under the assumption that the Lindner Center wouldn't issue a flat denial. That HIPAA would require them to say "we don't answer questions about whether or not someone was a patient."

It's not a "Russia plague," it's good-ol'-fashioned Yersinia pestis. Already endemic in the US (don't sleep in a room full of prairie dogs, no matter how cute they look). One person died b/c she was studying Y.p. in a lab in a part of Russia where it's also endemic. Literally nothing to worry about.

Fred Guttenberg@fredguttenberg.bsky.social

Yesterday Trump said "we have some big surprises coming up in a few weeks." Something about this Russia plague is feeling way too familiar. Don't be surprised if this Russian plague shockingly comes to America in around 10 days and Trump shuts everything down before the election.

For further reassurance: There are ~7 cases per year *in the US alone.* Those very, VERY rarely result in deaths, since the disease is treatable with antibiotics (especially if prophylactic treatment begins before symptoms).

The paterfamilias of pedocon theory has passed, leaving Donald Trump as the Senior Pedophile in the Republican Party.

Dennis Hastert — the former House speaker who was later sentenced to prison time over hush money payments made to cover up sexual abuse of teen boys — has died at age 84.

If you know anything about the history of Southern Italy, you know that Jimmy Garoppolo is the synthesis to the thesis and antithesis of Tommy DeVito and Athan Kaliakmanis. No, I won't be taking questions at this time.

lol. Pete Hegseth jumping straight from the War of 1812 to the Cold War. Because he's certainly not gonna say "Send me to fight the Confederates or the Fascists."

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Hegseth: "Send me to right the Redcoats, send me to fight the communists, send me to fight the Islamists. Send me."

Changing the line to "Wherefore art thou fucking Romeo" would probably make it easier to parse correctly for modern readers who don't know what "wherefore" means.

Mark Wallace@wallaceme.bsky.social

Ok don’t let’s get carried away but I found something genuinely good on Threads.

Mamdani's style to this point has been largely "non-confrontational" on stuff like this, but he really needs to step in as the de facto leader of the party in NYC and say he won't work w/ any Brooklyn Dems officers elected or appointed through this corrupt framework. Declare them persona non grata.

Greg Pak@gregpak.net

This Brooklyn Democratic Party County Committee meeting was an anti-democratic disgrace. Shame on the leaders of the party, who ignored legitimate questions from reformers, tried to get the cops to eject people, insulted dissenters, and pushed through Bichotte-Hermelyn's power grab. 📷🧵

There's two interpretations of this headline. In one, DicussingFilm and/or THR don't know what "Old/Olde English" means. In the other, Robert Eggers is making an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet where they speak like Beowulf. I know which is more likely, and I know which one I'd like to be true.

DiscussingFilm@discussingfilm.net

Robert Eggers is set to direct a new film adaptation of ‘ROMEO AND JULIET’. The film will feature the actors speaking in Olde English. (Source: www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...)
