Oct 26, 1954 Reuters silent newsreel of Roy Bergo trying to sail from Edmonds, WA to Alaska in a children's bathtub. Without charts/maps, he instead said "I will rely on my own judgement." He made it 12 miles before a very annoyed Coast Guard had to rescue him. #alaskahistory

a thing i'm curious about: is there a way to create a Planetary Impact Status for certain types of projects, including private ones, that could trigger a much stricter, multinational review process? cuz maybe we've always needed it but we need it tenfold now

So that Bond villain plan to launch mirrors into space to reflect sunlight back at earth at night? It's already happening, and thanks to the oligarchs and their rubber-stampers in the federal government, there's not a whole lot we can do. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

i know that's an absurd lift and unlikely right now. i'm just trying to imagine what kind of structures you would even create to stop / vet the startups that are already impacting weather and obscuring the stars.

still receiving push polls from shady Outside pollsters/campaigns, taking them even though i already voted to express my irritation thru their data interestingly, they ask how I'll rank 2nd-4th place candidates without offering any "none of the above" option. you don't have to rank everyone!

part of me wonders if that's the point of the push poll I just took, making Alaskans feel as if they have to rank politicians they hate to complete the assignment. but we don't have to do that.

Happy Monday, everybody! This week, have you considered voting early (if you can) and voting in person (if you can)? It's fun! Try it if you can!

the data journalism Alaskans need: "A sample from the 1930 Census showed the territory was home to twice as many Dans as the national average rate, while WWII enlistment files show Dans holding strong at 1.8 times the national rate."

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won Brazil’s presidential runoff, defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and securing a fourth, non-consecutive term as president. The result was confirmed by Brazil’s electoral authority. www.reuters.com/world/americ...

You want to talk about lessons learned? Fine But I'm not giving into the idea that it was the "excesses" of the movement to blame and not the highly visible and successful coordination of large segments of the US oligarchy and police state to crush said uprising

Idgaf what AOC says I refuse to accept the framing of Woke 1.0 what you had was one of the largest uprisings against racism in US history that reverberated throughout the social structure to the extent that businesses that otherwise didn't give a shit had to at least look like they cared

please please vote before election day, and tell your circles to. Republican mayors and governors are watching this unfold and getting ideas.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

Apparently, some Houston voters are putting their I Voted stickers on the Lorenzo Salgado Araujo memorial. Stephen Miller is ALREADY trying to scapegoat others for losing whatever races they lose in Texas and elsewhere. This is a vivid testament that for some voters, his murder squad is the reason.

Every time I hear some cis person say "it's just sports, that's not a human right," I think about this poast and a little bit of me dies inside. "I am tired of being discriminated against and having things I love and sometimes need taken from me because of hate and ignorance." 💔

1/ This was so difficult for Emily to do. Having to tell her team she is banned by the FA at the end of the month from playing football just because of who she is. It tore her apart telling them. She then had to pull it together and play football, which she did. On the way home we both cried a lot

i am singing in an unstaged version of a brand new locally written opera this afternoon at the local arts & culture center. sometimes small town life rocks for artists. it's SO hard for a young composer to get a reading of a full orchestral/choral work; here we're just DOING it.

i did particularly enjoy watching the pianist play in Xtra Tuffs every night up until now; absolute Juneaumaxxing. we'll see what the footwear choice is today for concert dress.

They want to ban trans people from swimming in college athletics but they also want to ban trans women from getting changed in the locker rooms at your local community swimming pool also. Denying us this kind of space is a route to denying us health and life.

Anti-trans Democrats are spreading poison when we can least afford it, during elections in this ongoing fascist takeover. As a strategy, it’s a recipe for failure. As a moral stand, it’s reprehensible. PS I’m the father of young trans woman and I’ll never forgive anyone who makes her life harder.

I found a nest of transphobes who need to hear this and now will not because I am on a blocking spree but I'm going to say it for any I miss: If someone's physical body disgusts you, that is a problem with YOU.

1) Shit's tense now in Europe, yes, but when I was a kid Germany was split in half by a wall and the concept of a European Union was unfathomable. 2) Famine and starvation were far more common than they are now. We were afraid we could never feed a growing global population, but we figured it out.

Also, as I have recommended multiple times: Go vote with someone vulnerable to the voter fraud conspiracy theories. Friends with a trans person who will be under suspicion bc of their ID or a brown person who speaks mostly Spanish? Don't make them go to the polls alone.

Celeste Pewter@celestepewter.bsky.social

If you haven't already, 1. Make a plan to vote, 2. Study your ballot this weekend, 3. Help your family and friends make plans too (e.g. can you take them to the polls/vote centers or drop off their ballots?) 4. Ask them to pass it forward.

I'd like to see more cis allies grapple with the crazy making environment trans ppl are living in right now the way that Hauser grapples with that here. There is no one right way to understand this, in part bc there's no one way all trans ppl experience it. But really sitting with it is important.

I try to imagine it—hearing a vicious, down-is-up simulacrum of my lived experience wielded as a tool & a weapon, every single day, on the heels of all the other ways, implicit & explicit, I'm dehumanized by my society, culture, & politics—& I can't. I only know how it looks from here, & it's vile.

In a little-noticed webpage update, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced a plan to decommission its online web archive at the end of the year, a move that would wipe tens of thousands of publicly available environmental resources from the web.

People with food allergies/sensitivities can socialize without risking life and limb. No one thinks I'm weird for wearing earplugs at concerts. The concept of extrovert/introvert, tired as it is, makes for more thoughtfully planned social gatherings, and makes saying no to them less painful.

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

Dear DOJ, this applies to you, too. Elections are the states' responsibility, especially since you gutted the voting rights act. Feds out of Alaska elections.

We don't need outside direction. This is our goddamn election. Try to buy us -- you're bound to fail. I co-wrote a song with Josh Fortenbery with help from @pat.alaskarobotics.com. We have THOUGHTS about billionaires spending for Prop. 2 in Alaska, and we will be voting NO. youtu.be/W0u7nS1_O_4
