Hi #EpiSky! I work on theory, stat, & molecular methods of intergenerational, life course, & family health equity (repro/perinatal/peds) I care about raising & supporting folks who do & care in non-Western/indigenous ways: community, lineage, environment (vs atomistic, ahistorical, self-centered).🙏🏽

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

As recently as last month, the Alt National Park Service was amplifying election misinformation. For god's sake, don't trust them. They're just click farmers.

AltWatcher@altwatcher.bsky.social

Extremely interesting piece from @cip.uw.edu at the University of Washington. Long story short, they identify the Alt National Park Service as a key amplifier of conspiratorial misinformation about a "mail dumping" news story last month.

My students found out about Tyler VdW recently (from TikTok no less). If cautions against unrealistic assumptions won't dissuade them from causal mediation analyses, this surely will.

Just handled a paper with hallmarks of LLM: Vapid rhetorical flourishes. Non sequiturs. Credit to the authors, they clearly disclosed it. Listen, non-native English speakers: I get the appeal. But these models are writing things you didn't intend & if you can't strongly edit, it's not serving you.

I think that most college professors have gone through something like this at some point. Craig's response was the right one, I believe.

Today in class I saw, again, a student just on their phone scrolling through videos. I have a no phone policy in class. This happens every day. I teach college. Honestly, I didn't know what to do. I stood there shaking in confusion for a while until I started talking again.

Is everyone else getting human verification screens when they just open a normal journal article url? Not downloading the pdf, just clicking to the article from a TOC email say? I feel like this is new this year, and probably reflects what @carlbergstrom.com is talking about here.

When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped. I can't even use google scholar from my university or starlink because they send too much traffic.

Public health researchers might only know how to use logistic regression, but at least that means they'll never use MANOVA

Cameron Patrick@cameronpat.bsky.social

Does anyone have a good reference for why you should (almost) never use MANOVA? I swear I had a paper saved but can't find it!

They want these rules/policies/culture because they want to normalize policing girls and women. No women are safe when female-ness must be inspected, regulated, and adjudicated by the state.

it’s wild that the heritage foundation wrote in text that the assault on trans woman particularly in sports is their first step in their efforts to completely abolish all Title IX protections and liberals still don’t believe it’s about more than trans women in sports

Jon Huang reposted

This "going rogue" framing is nonsense. These are still just text analysis models. It's openAI that is "going rogue" by giving a computer program complete autonomy to make decisions without human oversight. That's a danger whether it's a fancy new LLM or an old-fashioned SQL database.
