New protected bikeway triggers mass sidewalk parking - normal city

Miser@misernyc.bsky.social

It's crazy how often you hear about "bikes on the sidewalk" when this is the actual reality in NYC

If you're free on Saturday, come down and heckle the dozen or so nuts that show up for this.

The folks who were going to protest the Bergen St. bike boulevard and bus redesign on Thursday are now doing it on Saturday morning. The white women organizing this have coopted BLM imagery, and they've dropped the fact that they're protesting against "fast buses" from some versions of the flyer.

I’ve been released from IDF custody with a “warning,” apparently because of my public profile (I told them I wasn’t even a congressmember yet, just a nominee). But several dozen rabbis & participants harvesting olives with me are still in detention.

Who the hell would develop this method? I saw officers doing payment enforcement on Munich subway (whole system is proof of payment). Plainclothes, only making a few inquiries per car. Not disruptive but still creates a sanction/disincentive

Stephen Jacob Smith@stephenjacobsmith.com

These MTA fare inspections on buses look like a total clown show. Bus stopped, extremely slow to inspect each fare, arguing with riders rather than just fining them, letting people go back to pay before you check them. I do not have faith in the MTA to really pull off citywide proof-of-payment.

🚨 BREAKING: Elon Musk personally proposed slowing down Ukraine’s Starlink access, and Trump agreed, The Telegraph reports, citing four sources. Musk reportedly later feared backlash from European customers and publicly denied responsibility, blaming the White House instead.

The Port Authority put out a strategic plan for improving cycling in 2017 that helped guide a generation of bridge projects Promise at the time was 5 year updates. But nothing has been forthcoming since - I was looking fwd to a 2022-3 plan pointing to more bike friendly airport access

Anyone know if DOT/DDC are still erasing the 4th Ave bikeway in places where it is doing capital work on the medians? (Haven't been on 4th in a bit) The Ydanis DOT had a totally bullshit rationale for the practice

Sharing the first of a few Oonee updates; as many of you know this year has been interesting but the good work must continue. We've begun pre-construction on the city's first Dutch-Style Bike Hub, that entails selecting a GC, confirming revised drawings and selecting components. More 🧵 ⬇️

Some news: This winter Team Oonee is launching NYC's first Dutch-Style🚲 parking hub in Brooklyn's Sunset Park. The Hub will provide free parking for 100+ bikes/scooters, and will include safe charging, and appt based repairs + lite service. This will make history in several ways. More deets in 🧵👇🏾

I dug into EIA data and found a growing divide between electricity prices at investor-owned utilities and public power providers. Then @michellema.bsky.social and I visited two towns that show what that divide means for customers on the ground. Read our story here! www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

I've had a couple of idyllic rides across Astoria's 31st Ave recently. The design is very cool, as are intersections w protected lanes on Crescent, 31st St, Vernon Interestingly, when I went to capture it, I had a much more typical NYC experience

This stuff is just never gonna work as intended here as long as the free for all for truckers & shitty 🚘 drivers is allowed to go on An observation - 31st Ave signal timing doesn't work for the easy cycling pace the design seems to call for, so most cyclists run most of the lights

Northern Blvd is a perfect application for protected bike lanes - important arterial whose traffic will otherwise deter most bike riders. But if you have to be prepared to ride *in traffic* - or weave in and out of the lane, which may be worse - every time you go, is there a point?

September was the only month in history we've seen an average diesel price over $6 per gallon, and we're likely to break that again in October with average prices currently at $6.287 per gallon.

💥Many batteries on the street or in the disposal cycle are “simply exploding due to age or damage”

Streetsblog NYC@nyc.streetsblog.org

Early efforts by the city to curb battery fires focused heavily on charging safety. But it turned out that 59 percent of the lithium-ion battery fires in 2023 started when those batteries were *not* charging, according to the city. The issue now, experts say, is with disposal. buff.ly/OypXR5V

What does this episode say about the AI industry LOL? "the appearance of Adams..only added to the sense of distrust and suspicion around the project"

Who thought getting Eric Adams to pitch a Wisconsin data center was a good idea? What did the former mayor of NYC do in the Badger State? How did it go so wrong? We traveled to Wisconsin Rapids to find out: hellgatenyc.com/eric-adams-w...

Looks like the $3 million + that James Dolan raised for pro-surveillance gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman wasn't enough. Dolan is holding a $10K/head fundraiser for him at MSG, per the @nypost.com. At a Knicks pre-season game.

The government *still* isn’t tracking how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens. We are. 500+ Americans have been handcuffed, held at gunpoint or held against their will in Trump’s second term. Our tally is almost certainly an undercount. THREAD (content warning: violence) ⬇️
