You can do the same thing, buying a house and borrowing against it—ha ha, just kidding, normal people get taxed annually on their wealth via property taxes, the "you can't tax wealth, the economy will collapse!" rule applies solely to the super-rich.

Steven T. Dennis@steventdennis.bsky.social

For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

Not a big story, it's just the Attorney General working with an imprisoned pedophile to help cover up the pedophile President's crimes conducted with his best friend for 15 years, a pedophile who the President sent, as a birthday card, a drawing of a naked adolescent girl.

This report is genuinely overwhelming, in terms of the evidence both against Trump and of a ham-fisted cover-up. Including one instance in which Ghislaine Maxwell was actually about to mention one of Trump's young accusers and Todd Blanche told her to stop talking. The media response is "yawn."

The elections are on next Tuesday, and so much is at stake, including the soul of the Democratic Party when it comes to transgender people. I am asking you to leave a very small number of races blank in which a Democrat has embraced extreme anti-trans hate. I make my case here.

Note the key phrase "so many people." Yglesias thinks it's fine—good in fact—that American billionaires are very interested in foreign elections and routinely influence them to promote corruption and fascism. His concern is that filthy plebs like you and me might want better things for everyone.

Yes well it does require things like “empathy” and possessing a basic understanding that all of our lives are interconnected

Everyone is correctly pointing out things like "empathy" and "caring about what happens to the rainforest because it effects them" as reasons why Matt is very stupid, and he is, but I want to propose an alternative take: "The Practice of Democratic Self Government" has always been fake.

a couple days instead of after years. Of course, this means that any effort to shut down the trains for a day will only preserve your presidency for a day, because the next day when you turn the trains back on, people can go to the office and change their vote. Obviously, in 1795 no one was going

to be able to run such a system, but it's not 1795, so maybe it's time to admit that we can just have a running vote total for politicians at all times, subject to constant change, and if they lose their majority, that's just a vote of no confidence from the people, instead of the parliament.

by shutting down public transit that day. So why on earth should we maintain systems with single point in time elections? If everyone everywhere in the entire country could walk into a DMV type location or a country registry office and change their vote at any time, then there would be no specific

month to unload a billion dollars in ad spending. It wouldn't make propaganda impossible, but it would make direct election propaganda a lot harder to manage. Likewise, if people feel betrayed by their candidate, they could change their votes the next day, ending a "we were tricked" presidency in

The lesson is quite clearly that "democratic elections" as the US concieves of them aren't and have never been democratic, and that there needs to be work to create a new system for democratically determining how a country will be run.

To provide a limited example: "election interference" takes two primary forms: 1) billions of dollars of ad spending or media manipulation around election dates to trick voters, who then immediately regret their votes. 2) preventing people from appearing at polling locations on election day, such as

they are able to overcome to the United States of America, which puts it's own desire to rule Brazil over Brazilian self-government. So has the rest of the world. The United States Presidential Election decides which millions of people we will kill in the next four years, so lots of other people in

other countries have good reason to care about US election results, and many countries do take steps to influence them. The lesson to be learned is not "wow, it's so sad that leftists are happy that Brazil was able to overcome the US election interference machine designed to proxy state Brazil."

Matt is a guy who lives in the United States of America, which has decided who gets to be in powers in most countries at most times since 1946. the point isn't that we should do this of course. the point is that the constitutional crisis isn't around the corner, isn't just over the horizon, isn't even ongoing. it's over. the constitutional order is done. it's just a question of whether one has accepted that fact in their heart yet.
