I just saw a piece in @thebookseller.com about this fundraiser - to protect and share a collection of over one million Black books in the UK, a labour of love by one collector, Baba Pepukayi, but a vital resource for the nation. www.gofundme.com/f/save-1-mil... Please share, and donate if you can.

Happy 78th Birthday to the NHS 🥳 Nye Bevan’s vision of universal healthcare became reality on 5 July 1948 "Illness is neither an indulgence for which people have to pay, nor an offence for which they should be penalised, but a misfortune, the cost of which should be shared by the community"

Something really joyful about having someone really well informed explain a thing you'd never have guessed was so interesting...

Since I did do my PhD in cyanobacteria growth and treatment optimization modeling AND work in the water treatment industry, I’m gonna share my theory as to what’s happening here and how to fix it. People are focusing on the painted bottom of the pool increasing residual heat, and while that 1/19

This is what a pogrom looks like: men in masks coming to drive you from your home. This is a collective failure of our political and media class because we did not have the courage to say no, and because too many were allowed to embrace this without shame

#BBCBreakfast: "... families had to be led to safety through the flames.. it wasn't just homes, cars were also torched by young masked men in these predominantly unionist streets, but the target here was immigrants.." This is what the likes of Reform are inciting.

Listening to Radio 4 this morning horrified by way they are normalising far right talking points in Belfast. Such a relief to hear @naomilong.bsky.social speaking to the truth that this is unjustifiable racist violence. I wish England had such smart, clear, courageous leaders at the moment.

This is a vg paper, worth reading if your job involves digitising services. It doesn't mention it specifically but it crystallised a useful metaphor for me: digitised services turn personal relationships into data entry, which has the result of making us more lonely

NHS data should be driving innovation & improvement – it’s an amazing resource We just published the sequel to our 2021 "Road to Hell" paper on using NHS data for research... things are worse! Buckle up for a long 🧵about *how COMPLETELY mad* system is for accessing NHS data for research 1/20

This is a great read: really interesting connections between the things Joshi learnt and the wisdom needed to engage effectively with health disinformation more widely.

FRIENDS Here's my great big story about my experiences deep in the guts of the "wind turbine syndrome" debate. What I fucked up, what I learnt, and what it tells me about the growing fears around data centres and inaudible "infrasound" Make some tea, sit down, have a read (thread coming later) ❤️

This is a really interesting read from a UK perspective. Good to be reminded that these issues are international, and push back on suggestions that a privatised model is any kind of solution. It lays out how the financial pressures in the US system drive up long bed waits.

This is such a joyful read. Simultaneously nostalgic and inspiring.

This is the best product review I’ve read: samhenri.gold/blog/2026031... It doesn’t matter if you’re interested in the MacBook Neo or not; this is the kind of essay that makes you think about the potential of technology and the joys of exploration.

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

The responses to this are just what I needed on a Monday morning. Some things are getting better!

Please give me an unironic list of things that have gotten better over the last ten years because I’m spiraling. I’ll start: you can buy an enormous TV from Costco for like $100 bucks now.

Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on. slate.com/technology/2...

I learned a great deal from this (very long) thread, definitely worth a read to try and understand what the new pope might mean (inc that this US pope won't/shouldn't please JD Vance and his ilk)

rahaeli@rahaeli.bsky.social

Pope Leo's first sermon and, uh, his using the phrase "be ever more fully a city set upon a hill" and cf'ing it to Rev 21:10 instead of any of the others before saying "many baptized Christians" are "living in a state of practical atheism" is. Well. Shots fired! www.npr.org/2025/05/09/g...

For every like I will post 1 UX fact (I'm not doing a meme image for this, UX fact #0 is that content is more important than visuals)

Really useful article on how to think about making clinican interactions with AI useful and avoid turning clinicians into 'liability sinks'. Look forward to seeing more coming out of this project.

A quick thread on schools and phones. I'm quite in favour of older kids having phones and managing their own social relationships/travel/finances and learning about how to be good digital citizen. Seems sensible and useful preparation for more independence and autonomy.

This is a great piece of writing, and shocking because - if this is our big debate, our big issue, that people are just asking “questions” about - we should be hearing this argument all the time, from the other side, as a mainstream take. That’s who was crowding the streets. Speak for those people.
