Bikes, birds and beers… not necessarily in that order. “A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It’s where the rich use public transportation” - Gustavo Petro

This video camera study showed that less than 5% of people on bikes broke traffic laws while riding bikes, yet 66% of people did so while driving. And perhaps even more importantly, if you REALLY want even MORE bike-riders to obey laws, build more protected bike infrastructure. Via @carltonreid.com

Time to show up Toronto bike friends. Be loud and demand this safe street infrastructure remain. The cost in lives is too much not to mention the 48M$ price tag. No improvement to traffic flow is the other outcome…so why do it? For votes. For perception by the Ford fan base. Urban vs suburban
It’s actually happening. Ford is ripping these bike lanes out Tuesday. Be there if you can.

Hey Vancouver friends, PLEASE sign this petition to save the traffic calming that has made my neighbourhood much safer for my kids and everyone else walking and rolling through it. It’s under attack by a vocal minority with the ear of the media and 2 municipal parties (TEAM and ABC, fyi). 1/
What a great thing for kids to help keep them safe from cars (drivers) on the most dangerous night of the year. I’d support this and other measures from our municipal government. @lucymaloney.bsky.social @seanorr.bsky.social
NYC is opening 160 car-free (but treat-filled) streets and plazas to enjoy fun and safe fall festivities this spooky season. Find one near you at nyc.gov/trickorstreets.

Please don’t assume anything, Alberta. Vote against the Russian and American-fuelled separation self-sabotage. Send a strong message to the rest of Canada that we’re in this together. Foreign actors want you to vote for your own Brexit or Trump… or to help them win by just staying home.
Antithesis of another artists most recent release…Check out new banger from Tegan and Sara. Vancouver love song? Great vibe for a Friday afternoon youtu.be/ak6ozFtEimM

I’d like to know which mayoral candidates / parties commit to bringing back our lost cultural events (like All Souls Nights) that were axed under the current council @ptfry.bsky.social @rebeccaleebligh.bsky.social @kareem42.bsky.social @colleenhardwick.bsky.social
Deeply disappointed to see @cityofvancouver.bsky.social terminated the All Souls Nights at Mountainview Cemetery. This event has been a tradition for us for the last 6 years, and the event has been going for 20. I’ll quote the statement from nightforallsouls.com In a thread:

One of the big lies that the foreign disinformation campaign targeting the Alberta Separation movement spreads is the claim that a yes-vote doesnt really mean separation, it just provides a stronger negotiation position within Federation. Tell that to the people who regret voting for Brexit.
“Both Russian and pro-Trump U.S. actors are amplifying and spreading misinformation about Alberta separatism in the hope of fraying Canadian unity and sowing distrust.” An overt attack on Canadian sovereignty, meant specifically to manipulate Canadians. That’s what’s fuelling Alberta separation.

This is my neighbourhood & this reporting is lousy - as are the people leading these efforts. The traffic calming here was well-advertised, involved extensive consultation, and does not barricade anyone in their own neighbourhood. It has made the area much safer for people walking and rolling. 1/

The walk to school is often a child's first step towards independence & it should be a safe one. School's back Sept. 8, so slow down in school zones & watch for kids. With ICBC & local communities, we're making streets around schools safer for kids, one crossing at a time. @lisabeare.bsky.social

To have any chance at all of dealing with climate overshoot past 1.5 C in a timely way, we must cut CO2 emissions AND make extremely deep cuts to methane. But people are sometimes surprised to learn that most of our methane emissions come from the food system. drawdown.org/insights/we-...
One of the frustrating parts about the climate crisis is that the solutions can seem out of reach. However many are low tech and relatively simple changes to the way we grow food or deal with waste and compost for example. Check out these folks for solutions if you are tired of feeling powerless.
Enhanced rock weathering is a practice that removes CO₂ from the atmosphere by accelerating the natural chemical and physical breakdown, or weathering, of rocks. https://bit.ly/4cfb5bB Project Drawdown covers this "Keep Watching" solution in the Drawdown Explorer.

IMPORTANT: If you support how GRANVILLE STREET in downtown Vancouver was transformed this summer into a PEDESTRIAN STREET & PEOPLE-PLACE, THEN TELL CITY HALL! They have a short survey below going on until Monday Sept 7th asking how u felt about it. The survey will be open until Monday September 7th!
Given the unusual timing & challenges, Vancouver’s Granville Street pedestrian zone 7-Week extension since the World Cup ended is one of the most important street transformation pilots in North America. The public support for the street has been remarkable. This week/weekend is the last. Come see.

Oakland is the latest city to show that speed safety cameras really do save lives: “The number of motorists going at least 11 mph over the speed limit fell by 70% at 18 locations since automated speed enforcement cameras went up.”

This raised intersection is @leniann.bsky.social’s magnum opus I watched multiple families on their way to the park cross here, and drivers fully complied with the law. Something shockingly rare at stop signs.

Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users. ALL ROAD USERS. What about painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them. Via @usa.streetsblog.org @nyc.streetsblog.org
Heads up Toronto fams. This isn’t over until it’s over. They will try again and again. Keep up the good fight!
Carney will approve jets at the Island airport. He's just not going to do it until after the Beaches-East York byelection at the end of August. Right next to that airport, David MacNaughton (Liberal bagman and Prez of Palantir Canada) is building a big ol' secret something at Ontario Place.
