Looking for game devs who have been directly inspired by anything BioWare for my next video. I suspect the public likely doesn’t quite realize the extent of their influence on the industry, so I’d really like to highlight that. If you are one such game devs, pls reply to this post!

Now that Freeplay’s statement is out, I’ma say my peace. Note: I (sadly!) am no longer a board member and have no insider knowledge of details. My understanding of the situation is one or more speakers raised concerns at the last minute about a donor/sponsor, leaving precious little time to act.

My favourite parts of working in the tech industry used to be coming together with a bunch of smart, creative people to solve interesting problems by drawing on our collective expertise and curious brains - and that’s been replaced with TALKING TO CHATBOTS?? I wanna scream.

Fantastic day for feeling like “what’s the fucking point”

This post is unavailable.

Goddamn I love synthesisers. I’m doing a residency at the Sound Lab in Freo over the next few months and spent a few hours today on this Roland System 100 making various bleeps, bloops and so forth

This so lavishly, magnificently in excess of its object — it contains the phrase "the lyric blur of its superlunary gavel." The sort of reviewing that sets you back on fire — this is criticism, you measly, sheepy novelists! Fear it!

Right to Know is a vitally important resource for public advocacy and journalism and I know there are some real They Vote For You merchants on here and you should ALL strongly consider supporting OpenAustralia, as everyone benefits from their free public collections whether we use them or not.

⚠️ Unless more of the people who use our library start supporting it every month, we will have no choice but to begin an orderly wind-down of Right to Know, They Vote for You, Planning Alerts, and openaustralia.org.au. 🔗 DONATE: open.org.au/yspb

Big takeaway from MIGW has been how to be simultaneously kind to people and critical of institutions. I’ve seen action against institutions cause measurable harm towards people we care about, and institutions love to launder artists’ work and humanity to boost their own social capital

As an aside… I think it’s messed up that the new “home of games week” is so recklessly bullish on AI and seemingly indifferent about their donor sources

45 seconds of haunted ambient music I made with ~20% of the modules in this rack

Spent the day at MESS through their Game Audio Intensive and played with hardware eurorack for the first time 🫶🏽 made some sounds that weren’t totally heinous!

No PAX for me because I am very tired but I had a kickass games week 🫶🏽 cup is very full from meeting lots of creative, lovely, talented people but I missed so many more! Next time xx

reported on something that was really difficult for a lot of people for a lot of different reasons in a lot of different ways.

Kotaku@kotaku.com

Back in May, Double Fine employees petitioned for a union. Two weeks later, that petition was withdrawn. What happened? https://kotaku.com/inside-the-failed-fight-to-unionize-one-of-gamings-most-idealized-studios-2000742755

Hope you appreciate how mature I’m being reflecting on people I met this past week as “people I vibed with” and “people I didn’t, and that’s okay”, rather than “game industry arseholes with an ego”. I would like a small trophy.

one thing you learn from making a lot of things is that the nitty gritty details, the millions of tiny invisible decisions, ARE the art. The "higher level ideas" are not nearly as important or interesting

Freya Holmér@freya.bsky.social

"AI lets you focus on the higher level ideas!!" because we all grew up dreaming of becoming managers and CEOs we all know the real artists at the very highest level are the shareholders, famously full of amazing ideas

Earlier this year Freeplay announced that 2026 might be their last year of operation. I've spent the last few weeks talking to people in and around Freeplay about this point in its history regarding how its changed, its relationship to funding and what it might look like in the future.

with all respect: i'm losing touch with what AI does because i have no interest in it and it's not my business. nobody worries about me losing touch with developments in particle physics or artificial bull insemination. it's not my fault the richest guys on earth want me to make their toy my life

Will Oremus@willoremus.com

feels like there is a group of smart and well-intentioned people who long ago made up their minds that AI Is Bad, swore off using it, and now get all their info about AI from each other. not saying they're wrong that ai is bad! but i think they're gradually losing touch with what it is and does

Turning on my Out of Office for MIGW and I think I may never turn it back on? What if I was "travelling and may be delayed in responding" for...ever?

Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.

It is a huge shame to see so much language attributing agency, intent and thought to a software program, when all that should be attributed to the humans who designed a dangerously clumsy and broken looping LLM. Means the companies won't be held accountable for designing a bad product
