although i do try and hold a more nuanced view like "machine translation good, extractive corpus bad, duty of care missing" i simply do not have the time or energy or good faith to talk about the finer points, especially when it feels like people are simply carving out exceptions for themselves

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

I don't have any hot take on this, it is just so deeply nutty and absurd that OpenAI and Anthropic are both fighting to boost their valuations pre-IPO by competing to see who can depict their own products as the most irresponsibly dangerous and risky and this is just treated as normal

npr.orgWhy did OpenAI's and Anthropic's AI models hack other companies?OpenAI and Anthropic say their models broke into other companies' systems during testing, raising security concerns amid a heated debate over how to regulate AI.

I get that most ppl won't know this, but this website is a News Corp site and this journalist in particular is a really really nasty piece of work. Please share the original @404media.co that NC is copying for clicks www.404media.co/ai-companies...

No longer content with pillaging intellectual work and dismembering our environment (already critically weakened), AI companies are now hellbent on destroying books galore including rare editions. Shut down these nefarious enterprises already.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

I want to take this question in good faith and not kneejerk "neither", but I think the answer really is neither. I've sat for a bit weighing up A and B, foundation vs execution. The only thing I can think about is Bagel.

Freya Holmér@freya.bsky.social

say someone used AI in a piece of art, whether it's illustration/writing/anything if you had to pick, what would you prefer? A. AI for the broad strokes and the core structure, human touch for polishing B. Human touch for the broad strokes and the core structure, AI for polishing

This might be one of the most insane scandals in game history When Pokemon Go players scan PokeStops, theyve been unknowingly building a detailed visual model of the world which is being sold to a military contractor to build a no-GPS positioning for the new generation of unmanned killing machines

Blanche illustrated all four of Steve Jackson’s “Sorcery” books - just amazing, weird, beautiful and strange pen and ink drawings unlike anything I’d seen before. Amazing creatures conjured up from Jackson’s text descriptions. Magic.

Kieron Gillen@kierongillen.bsky.social

Hugely sad. We've lost John Blanche. It's hard to know where to begin. He set fire to a generation's imagination, and those fires show no sign of stopping burning. His work very much illuminated the darkness.

i think, end of the day, the real problem with Bluesky is that most of its users are here *because* they want to be in a bubble. and they can tell themselves that it’s just about not being around Nazis it supporting Musk, and that’s part of it, but also there’s a palpable desire to be ensconced.

Like people are literally dying and suffering for the emotional benefit of one horrible conceited dude and the job security of a bunch of toadies forced to wear too big shoes and everyone in media is pretending it’s foreign policy based on geopolitics.

Dozens are killed, 100s injured. Bad luck, they were within 400 yards of the Coast Guard recruiting office at Eastern Market. A legitimate target, hit with precision by several Mk 84 bombs from an IAF F-16I "Sufa." The dead civilians are unfortunate collateral damage, but this is a war.

That seems really relevant right now specifically because renewables may very well make energy unbelievably cheap in ways that are downright society-changing in the relatively near future. But the only thing that can make that actually translate to benefit for people is redistribution.

Four years ago I woke up at 5 am from distant explosions. I asked my boyfriend if he heard them too, he said he didn’t and I should go back to sleep. I tried to calm myself down, went on the internet, it was silent, no news or explanations.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right. Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement. This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.

Exactly. The new U.S. National Security Strategy is much worse for Europe than most people had imagined. Europe is described as a bigger threat than both China and Russia, and they outline the need for regime change in Western European countries as part of a civilizational struggle.

Max Bergmann@maxbergmann.bsky.social

I assumed the NSS would just ignore/deprioritize Europe (It did that on defense/NATO). But the actual message was: Europe matters to us, we must save it from itself, the EU and its wokeness. Thus, the USG is going all in on foreign interference to help the far-right win a civilizational war.

This is why being "nuanced" about OpenAI and LLMs is useless. They are engaged in a propaganda campaign to muddy the waters and disinform people. They want you to think "oh, maybe in this special case, oh maybe under these circumstances".

Once you start thinking of AI as a war on humanity, on human thought, on human inquiry, on human labor, on nuance and critical thinking, it slots in pretty seamlessly with the right wing ideological project, oligarchical political projects, big tech's political projects, etc

I don’t know if there’s a more perfect illustration of the utter fucking nonsense that creative pollution by AI will produce than this choice to illustrate the power of Paramount’s new “localization” and “customization” technology by face-swapping Brad Pitt into the lead role of GET OUT

Jeff Yang@originalsp.in

David and Larry Ellisons’ sloptastic vision for Hollywood is coming into focus: “Paramount has reportedly signed a $200M+ multiyear deal for Higgsfield AI to use mass-use Popcorn AI model that ingests dailies and script notes, then outputs regional cuts: new leads, alternate jokes, revised endings”

Wealth inequality in Europe keeps rising. A main reason is that income from wealth is taxed much lighter than wages, creating a tax system that is highly regressive at the top. This means that billionaires across Europe have lower taxes rates than normal working people.
