Fantastic thread, but what really resonates with me is just how self-destructive these studio annihilations are. I don't know how we effectively inform investors that this is just straight up malfeasance.

Thomas Marrone@thomasthecat.bsky.social

One of the most insightful comments about game development came from a former boss. He said “Making a game is like starting a band. You can’t throw money at a new studio with random AAA veterans and expect it to crank out a hit.” 🧵

Technology is the explained and magic is the unexplained. If your scifi has hi-tech doodads from a foregone time that nobody knows how to fix or reproduce, that's magic. If your fantasy novel knows where the magic comes from and has gotten spellcrafting down to a science, that's technology.

I didn't realize it was an actual setting, I thought something had messed up with my install. Turned it off and all is right in the world.

this is roughly one possible interpretation of the Fermi paradox. what if other intelligent thinking beings are out there but operate on a very different timescale? what if their speech-cycles are a millisecond, or a millennium, and we're either missing them or mistaking them for static equilibrium

The only reason why people can think a brain is "thinking" is because of the illusion of an instantaneous response. If people performed the same neural state changes over a few centuries using paper & pen, at no point in time would anybody believe there is thinking going on.

i already wrote everything remotely smart or interesting i have to say about llm consciousness and this cleansed me of the desire to continue talking about it

Executive and dopamine disfunction. I've spent SO much time avoiding the discomfort of work, and also fucking up whole days because I gave in to pleasure-seeking too early in the day.

If you have ADHD (diagnosed or very strong suspicion) I have a question for you What ADHD symptom/quirk/characteristic has been the most detrimental to your life to date? For me, it’s my challenge w attention to detail & my terrible memory. I’ve lost more jobs than most ppl work their whole lives

I seriously wonder what comes in the next era of software. More specifically, I wonder if corpos will try and stomp decompilation and custom software etc. under their boot like they did with P2P sharing, because as much as they may try again, we're talking a very different ball game.

So I'm expecting a much more diminished resistance by corporations wrt AI empowerment of the user, or at least a much more divided resistance. How much will people be able to get away with while corporations hem and haw? Genuinely no idea here. Future's wild.

Like, do you see what I mean? This looks almost diametrically opposed to the music industry's reaction to P2P sharing. One way or another, it's gonna be interesting times ahead. bsky.app/profile/kira...

isn't it fucking insane, that Micro$oft, fucking Micro$oft of all companies is pro-remix culture now? total Free Culture victory babyyyyy

With P2P it was still about power to the people, about apps available to everyone to easily disempower corporations. The part that has no precedent is how today companies are using the very same tools as their single growth story and growth drive left to put on the table.

Even taking aside all the hype on the subject, if companies successfully cripple AI by legislation, it would amount to shooting themselves in the foot. We're not riding the shockwaves of the dotcom anymore, they don't have any other means to keep the Line Go Up trend, or at least to justify it.

Use reference. I’m serious. I get it that somehow you or someone convinced you that using reference is “cheating.” It’s not. You are just hindering yourself.

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

It feels impossible to me to conceive of what the software industry will be like in 5 years, what with decompilation becoming so readily available. Some are saying software will move to the cloud, but that's already happened. We have bled SaaS dry as a concept well before any AI got into this.

For all its numerous flaws, this is still the most interesting development in technology in the last 20 years. At at economic level it's an enormous bubble, but so were trains and the web. Nipping it in the bud would be an unheard-of political maneuver.

It's starting to genuinely feel to me like we're on the cusp of a great turbulent period, after which the world of software will be largely unrecognizable from present circumstances.

Some foresee government intervention but like, it would take a catastrophically heavy hand to stop people from eg. running open models on their machine. Plus the governments do not want to stop the forward motion, between the excitement and the hysteria and the competition between nations.

There is no counterargument that satisfies his followers because his argument is elaborate question-begging and him and his followers don’t know enough about the real world to see this. There is no counterargument to “a malevolent supernatural entity would be very scary and dangerous”. It would!

rich@theresrich.bsky.social

I'd think if Yud was wrong about AI being a potential threat, *someone* would be able to construct an actually decent counterargument against him This "what a weirdo", "haha so dumb" shit would obvs exist either way, but there would *also* be, like, somebody who could formulate a coherent rebuttal

The thing about "stochastic parrot" is that it describes the parts where it has trained on our corpus (parrot) and it uses a probabilistic distribution to select the next token (stochastic), but doesn't describe how it gets to those probabilities, which is the rest of the fucking owl
