Are the "other priorities" keeping people from finding out how bad measles is so they don't start vaccinating their kids and turn against the movement?

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

The CDC denied a request from California, Hawaiʻi, Oregon, and Washington to validate a high-volume measles test, citing “other priorities.” 🤨

I'm pretty anticarceral in general, but I do think if you donate a puzzle with a missing piece to a puzzle exchange, you should go to prison. Especially if it's an edge piece. You can share a cell with the person who doesn't take the puzzle apart before donating it.

Also this.

Okay, so I was very excited to see that Libby has introduced new controls letting you filter out AI content! Yay, I want to filter stuff! But where's the metadata? My books are marked as "author has not disclosed if AI was used." Most books are, even Moby Dick! If they're going to filter stuff,

This is going to be such an annoying email to have to write on Monday morning. (Do the thing, and if you feel so moved, you can also contact Overdrive to let them know that their inclusion of AI generated materials sucks).

You should not vote for fascism because fascism is evil. But also, you should not vote for fascism because fascism is stupid.

OK yes, I was late for work. HOWEVER. It is the first cold, rainy morning of fall, and both cats were snuggling in bed with me, so actually I am a hero for being here at all.

Just read this out loud to my Bic lighter software engineer 🤣

grateful I had the foresight to marry a “I’d rather make toast with a Bic lighter than own a toaster with a touchscreen” software engineer, and not a “honey the new microwave records us constantly and has access to all our banking information, isn’t that great” software engineer

The machine did not "go rogue." The machine belongs to and is the responsibility of the people who own it. Hold those people accountable for their goddamn machine.

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

I just received a clearly AI written email about how a coworker had used AI to fuck up a document, and offering to use AI to make it even worse. My human brain had to take the time to explain why the changes were wrong, instead of doing my own work. This is not an improved workflow.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

The good news is I finally got to pull out my fuzzy sweater at work. The bad news is, that's because the high today (in Colorado! In October!) is like 90, and the AC is raging.

Me: Ugh why does my sinus itch so bad?? I better not be getting sick! Me earlier today at the barn: *makes joke about how well the ragweed crop is coming in*

Goddammit. The contempt these people have for everything wondrous and good and *human* is so grotesque.

"Before Stonehenge was raised, before Egypts first pyramid broke ground, before the Nazca people drew their famous lines across the Peruvian desert, someone in what is now southern Arizona shaped a 272-foot fish into the earth On April 23,2026,"a border-wall contractor drove heavy equipment across it"

The GI disease kitten I couldn't save was named Woodstock. It's been over a decade and I've worked with probably thousands of cats since, but I remember him and I hope my donation helps another cat have a better life than he did.

I have a Big Ask from our community. Many of you will remember our graduates Pikachu and Eevee, who were adopted together. Eevee had dealt with some very challenging chronic diarrhea while she was a kitten, but before adoption, we figured out a food that worked for her & she was all better (thread)

I brought my coffee outside to drink on the deck (because why have suburban house if not enjoy suburban rituals), and it could almost be described as brisk out here! This is very exciting.

Professionalism is looking at the Fat Bear Week bracket with your boss during work hours, but not referring to any of the bears as a "boss bitch." Even if they are.

Thank YOU. I believe profoundly that the only correct response to pleasure is gratitude rather than guilt

Just saw an older dude walk down the creek path fully reading a paperback. Just nose-down in a book, out for a stroll. Living the dream.

Oh yay I can stop watching it on YouTube! This show is so good it cured my fear of my flying (I watched it on a plane and forgot to be nervous).

Oh my God Taskmaster has hit Hulu. I repeat all seasons of Taskmaster are on Hulu. If you've never watched Taskmaster go start watching it literally right now

Got so excited for fall (it was technically in the 50s when I left for work!) that I wore a cute sweater today. Had to ditch it within half an hour of arriving at work. Climate's haunted.

it’s nice to know that, as a nerdy and insufferable kid with good standardized test scores, I could really have turned out a whole lot worse

Here is Eliezer Yudkowsky explaining (like a very normal person who absolutely does not have some kind of acute personality disorder) why, on the basis of his childhood test scores, he is a special genius uniquely qualified to change the world: web.archive.org/web/20010309...

My last job interview was in 2020. My cat attended. I got the job. It is so annoying to me that we still want to treat job applicants like they are being granted an audience with super special royalty.

I desperately need to know what KIND of worms. In the absence of an answer, I am going to imagine petstore mealworms. Like a hedgehog.

Got my updated flu and covid vaccines! Very appreciative of my state and my provider both being like "yeah, vaccines are good actually, vaccines for everyone!" Simple walk-in visit, nice chat with a nurse, protected. Done.

I truly, deeply, sincerely do think the guy flipping burgers at McDonalds should be able to afford rent, bills, and groceries with his paycheck alone. That's kind of the whole point of having a job and I can't believe this is considered a radical position.🤷🏽‍♀️
