Basically, I think Trunk or Treat teaches people, or encourages them to lean into, in most contexts the worst kind of "stranger danger" fear of neighbors that is corrosive of community and often grounded in entirely Urban Legend level dangers associated with Halloween.

Three moments broke Trump 2.0: 1) Kimmel and other attempted censorship after Charlie Kirk. Made public see the attack on speech. 2) Minnesota anti-ICE protests, Goode and Pretti killings. Made public see the attack on rights. 3) Iran war. Made public see bad foreign policy affects them directly.

I do think when historians look back the period the exact moment where it flipped and started going the other way won’t be anything any politician did but my Minneapolis neighbors weathering the worst of the regime in the streets, rallying together, fighting back, and winning

The key takeaway for the two EU Member States who are about to fight the hardest 🗳️ battles in 2027 - France and Poland - is that the rule of law matters (something Polish centrists forgot about during the 2025 presidential election) and that young, angry people are a force to be reckoned with.

really great thread about mobilization in brazil both on the streets and on social media:

I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.

Lula is to my left. Magyar is to my right. And I don’t care in the slightest, because they are the candidates of democracy against autocracy.

I’d love to get back to a timeline where elections were about “I think Joe has better policy ideas than Bob,” rather than our current “THE FATE OF DEMOCRACY IF NOT LIFE ITSELF REQUIRES BOB TO LOSE MY GOD WHY ARE MORE BILLIONAIRES FUNDING BOB?!” elections of today.

Jacob T. Levy@jacobtlevy.bsky.social

If you had told me at any point in Lula's 1st or 2nd term not only that I would be rooting for him in the future ... but also that I'd be rooting for his *4th* term, when he's *80*, after multiple corruption convictions... and that I would think it was of *urgent global importance* for him to win...

most people here already know this but it’s still worth underlining. we live in a world where our fates are tied together; our politics have to accommodate that

Laura Bassett@lebassett.bsky.social

Lula has called for the arrest of two officials in connection with the election sabotage and asked to extend voting hours in places where the vote was suppressed

Laura Bassett@lebassett.bsky.social

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

while this is good, this only matters if the executive branch faithfully executes congress's demands.

❗️Reuters reports that if Democrats win both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterms, they could move to approve new aid for Ukraine. Such legislation would likely have the two-thirds majorities needed to override a Trump veto. #Ukraine

NEW on @zeteo.com — Venues are *pulling out* of hosting Vivek Ramaswamy for his bus tour across Ohio in the closing days of the election. “We’re getting calls that people don’t want him there,” a top Ohio Republican says. “It’s that damn ad.” From @andrewperez.bsky.social and @swin24.bsky.social:

zeteo.comVenues Start Canceling on Vivek Ramaswamy Over His Disgusting Ad: ‘People Don’t Want Him There’Businesses have begun pulling out of Vivek Ramaswamy’s bus tour with other GOP candidates. ‘It’s that damn ad,’ a top Ohio Republican tells Zeteo.

i also grew up in a family where certain restaurants were for special days.

I grew up in a lower income immigrant family and we ate at Red Lobster for "special days." But we also understood the White House should not look like the inside of Red Lobster. It's condescending to assuming working ppl are culturally illiterate bc their experience is shaped by their limited means.

the thing to focus on is how few democrats are actually doing it. the vast majority of democrats running this fall are not cutting bigot ads, which is good because it means we can crush these people in the future

If you want to understand the "red undertow" theory, it is likely a product from the northern tier states being less diverse so they're not seeing as much as a Democratic shift as the more diverse southern tier states, which are seeing big turnout increases among communities of color

Hispanics under the age of 30 have not only exceeded their total turnout at this point in 2024, they have almost doubled it.

Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

reading books is an act of resistance!!

The attack ad against Acton is another in a long list of right-wing gotchas that have blown up in their face -- Eric Schmitt's attack on Jack Smith, the conspiracy that Talarico was in rehab, Tommy's heckling of El-Sayed, etc etc. Their echo chambers keep convincing them to do incredibly dumb shit

There was an annoying trend #onhere when someone would say that white evangelicals aren’t “real Christians” or something and get flooded w “yes they are, you have to own them!” replies. But their views are legit outliers, when viewed across denominations.

you dont have to be some sort of religious scholar to get this. im a barely christian who mostly knows about the bible from some stuff i learned as a little kid and from my mother. jesus is empathy, empathy is jesus. that's the whole point of the entire book. the entire faith.

there is no rational way for a sentient human being to be a part of a religion where jesus christ is arguably the most important figure and be anti-empathy. no possible way. at all.

Hungary's April 2026 elections presented a pretty clear choice: continue down the path of becoming a vassal of Putin's Russia, growing more and more like it, or reject that path. It seems to me that American voters are increasingly facing a similar choice.
