Final reading list for my AI course follows, week by week. UC summer sessions are 5 weeks, compressed from the 10 week regular quarter (already short). So, teaching Comm/Media undergrads an upper division class on this, during the summer of the constantly moving AI needle was⦠a challenge. Still:
Pinned 𧡠-- a Critical AI reading list I'm building in conjuction with a course I'm teaching this summer. I'll be adding to this during the summer, both scholarly works and non-academic public writings, beginning with the Brian Merchant article in the post below:
My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.
We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps:
-Itβs βsleight of handβ
-Itβs βbated breathβ
-Itβs βlo and beholdβ
-It's 'buck naked'
-Itβs βbrass tacksβ
-Itβs βfree reinβ
-Itβs βtoe the line'
When JD Vance says Abdul El-Sayed should express "gratitude" for what America has given him, Vance is really saying he's lower on the American hierarchy than "heritage Americans" are.
I asked El-Sayed to respond to this point. Here's his answer:

Me: Recycle Bin -> Empty Recycle Bin
PC: Are you sure you want to permanently delete 20 items?
Me: Yes
PC: Deleting 4,121 items.... Done! (window disappears)
Um.
Meta took down the No Kings instagram; TikTok banned the Musk documentary account for supposedly violating its political posting policies.
A reminder that platforms are owned by the wealthiest of people, control the means of media distribution, & put their thumbs on the democracy scale as they wish
The 5 at Camp Pendleton is fully closed again thanks to the Henderson Fire, which started yesterday. Thereβs also a new fire nearby called the Scales Fire.
People traveling between San Diego and Orange County are not going to have a fun afternoon drive.
3 hours, IT person at Sega (yes, them) in Chicago, 1994. First day of work and (unsurprising) Katrina's first day at daycare. She was upset. They called me to talk to her, so I did, for about 10 minutes. Boss man said I wasn't the kind of person who could do the job and fired me.
Funny/not funny sequel: I'd paid for daycare with rent money and now I had no job, so I went to a temp agency (they're fast, right?) and they sent me to sub for an Exec Asst at Solo Cup, and Solo told temps no thanks after 1 day bc they suspected I was "into recycling" and didn't share their values
Michel Foucault Centennial at Duke University PressΒ (2026)

"in full agreement with Sally, we have taken the decision that we can no longer supply her works in the UK in any format," Faber said.
The move comes after Rooney β¦ announced last year she would be donating proceeds of her books to Palestinian Action, which was controversially banned in the U.K.
It is insane that nationstates have given control of communication networks vital to military operations to a racist white nationalist oligarch. This is science fiction levels of idiocy.
Starlink should be nationalized by Europe, taken by eminent domain

i know people think this is just bluster, and ill grant thatβs probably most likely, but i donβt think we should understate the chances that a gutter racist president has staffed the DOJ with gutter racists that are going to try and denaturalize a sitting congresswoman cause they hate somalis.
BREAKING: Justice Department issues subpoenas in investigation into progressive Rep. Ilhan Omarβs immigration status, including to members of her family.
Some research I did today brought me to this interview, which contains a shockingly good insight into why Western leftism's relationship to Russia has always been weird and occasionally painful, for me. Here, maybe you'll find it interesting: www.fpri.org/article/2025...
They're making a mistake imagining that some artificial consciousness(es) will turn us all into batteries because of some supremacist goal. It's far more likely some rogue accounting script at some car parts store in the midwest will turn the planet into goo for no apparent reason.
What a weird world we live in - Ukraine hits a data centre deep in Russia - Irish twitter users see racist posts about IPAS centres in Offaly fall off a cliff
You can kill as many people as you want, but you target a beautiful precious data center? The one that hosted all 40,000 Sexy Ladies For Ken Paxton accounts?
π π New paper officially out in @nathumbehav.nature.com!
In 2023, Change.org built an AI-assisted writing tool into their platform. We offer causal evidence that access to the AI tool changed petition text (word count, language)... but may have actually hurt outcomes (signatures, comments).
"I am even a Prometheus apologist" ALMOST kept me from sharing this, but I will anyway, because it's a really fantastic list. There is even a film here I haven't seen, and I might now despite its subject matter ("The Invisible Man"). open.substack.com/pub/bloodint...
Prometheus though. π«£ Look, I maintain this is still the first and last word on that piece of... media that you'll ever need to read: m15m.livejournal.com/23209.html - @bcmerchant.bsky.social if you've never read this, you might actually love it too.
This is vile, disgusting, perverted to such a degree that my insides have been roiling. I cannot fathom it. It's bad enough we still kill people in this country, and try to sanitize it and make it polite, as if such a thing makes it okay. This is just pure horror.
I predict a vast audience.
OneDrive just sent me a slideshow of "silly moments in your history" that's just a long series of photos taken sitting across various tables from my daughters. I really miss having them both in front of me at the same time :(
Whoa. @haleaziz.bsky.social has the scoop on a truly insane plan to use some military training ships for deportations, with people presumably shackled or locked in cells for days at a time as they transit to Central and South America.
Each journey would be staggeringly expensive β and dangerous.
What actually happens in this kind of situation is that mom curses under her breath and takes over, because she knows that reading to a child is about the *experience* of parental engagement, not the mechanics of hearing a voice. He feels clever and smug because heβs unloaded the task either way.
A new Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology has just been published, in which it is claimed that the human species is polytypic: not only is race biologically meaningful but the races are distinct enough to be considered subspecies. Published by Elgar. In 2026.

Even if all these parents were angels, this isn't new. A random comment on a reddit post the other day reminded me that we used to be able to do this much more effectively before the internet. It was called "moving out of state."
The best article I've read on the subject is still Natalia Roudakova's only a couple of years after the murder. It's a bit of a time capsule now, but the context it describes is a useful and instructive one to know, given the intervening years and Russia's media systems now. doi.org/10.1080/1058...
Novaya Gazeta reporter Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in her Moscow apartment building on Oct. 7, 2006. Twenty years have passed. A memorial plaque outside her home has been destroyed repeatedly by vandals this year.
Also today, Putin turns 74.
