The Little Mermaid. I had to be taken out because I was terrified of Ursula.

Mark Thompson@markreckons.bsky.social

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

For various reasons Trump is not actually a dictator but he behaves exactly as if he were one. There's always the stage where they can't accept any dissent so they bury themselves in toadies and propaganda and become genuinely detached from reality. It never ends well

I've just been reading Albert Speer's Inside the Third Reich for a thing and Trump definitely resembles late-stage Hitler: surrounded by sycophants, rejecting all criticism, denying facts about the war he's losing, making mad declarations, seeing enemies everywhere. Not great

Again he’s really losing it with the AI stuff now

They're polling eight points lower than their general election result, which was itself the worst in their entire history, their leader couldn't explain the big defense policy they opened conference with, none of their big new tax cuts are funded, and yet it's still covered as a triumph

I get the appeal of nostalgia, I really do, but I find it specifically funny to get a leaflet from Reform's candidate talking about how when he was in the Met 31 years ago, he would never have dreamed of lawlessness like the kind we now see in Kings Cross.

Still got it!

(1/3) Congratulations to the GREAT Boeing Company for producing a plane, the 737 Max, that was able to withstand G Forces and Strain far beyond what it was designed and expected to do. It was an amazing show of precise and powerful structural planning and design. It is about

A cash-strapped rural police force struggles to deal with Red Diesel gangs. Until its chief inspector realises can get the Met Police to deal with the problem... ...if he pretends they're Iranian. A new six part comedy starring Toby Jones.

The security services remain tight-lipped about possible motives. Russian sabotage, Islamist extremism and direct action from anti-war protesters were not ruled out. But, given the context, Iran would be an obvious suspect

There is literally no pressure group small or mad enough that the government won't indulge them if they oppose immigration.

Okay Kushner, let's apply that same logic to Iran. They want a nuke, control of both straits, and to maintain their close ties to Hezbollah and Hamas. That is Iran's line of what they want to achieve. If the US and Israel, you know, wanted to withdraw to that line...

Kushner on Ukraine: “President Putin's laid out his line of what he wants to achieve. If Ukraine, you know, wanted to withdraw to that line, then obviously, you know, we have the rest of the deal set up and put together. Ukraine right now does not want to do that.” Putin’s brain cell

A detail missing from The Times story… the woman who took the photo shared it to a Facebook group called ‘South east patriots’.

Mic Wright@brokenbottleboy.bsky.social

The Times has run a story this morning about how ‘polite’ the masked men in Dover were to three white ladies on a train. Propaganda in its clumsiest form.

Quite ironic reading many of the replies to this thread, on the same day the UK’s excellent PISA results are released.

Peter Walker@peterwalker99.bsky.social

Thinking back on the Reform UK conference, one of the big impressions it left was *cosiness*. This sounds odd given the rhetoric, but it reminded me of some Tory conferences and Labour under Corbyn, where it was often a comfort blanket for members, with no beliefs or failures really challenged.

The Raglan, E17. Great local, delicious food, always feels warm and welcoming. The Jackalope, W1G. Great rotating beer selection, incredible Szechuan-style noodles downstairs. The Pembury Tavern, E8. Now a 5 Points pub, still got the old billiards table, and maybe the best pizza in London, Ace.

Ah, go on then, let's make this a thing: - The Ivy House, Nunhead. Weird bands for cheap. Great pizza. Lovely vibes. - Bullfinch Brewery, SE4. There are many good places to drink in railway arches hereabouts. This is the best. - The Dog & Bell, Deptford. Right by the river. No suits or tourists.

Andy Burnham has defended the government’s early release scheme, citing one example with a very positive outcome. “There was this man – let’s call him ‘Keir’. He was sentenced to five years inside. It was a living hell for him.” From the latest Private Eye, out now.

The least likely pundit-brain call/prediction is for Sadiq Khan to immediately quit the House of Lords, to run in a Westminster by-election, to trigger a London Mayoral by-election! He would not want to. The Labour NEC would obvs not sanction it either.
