California judge rules that a report on police in Vallejo bending their badges to mark fatal shootings can remain secret. The judge also closed the hearing to public and press and locked the door to the courtroom. openvallejo.org/2024/10/02/f...

Boss: "Ok team, the midterms are one week away, we need our next poll to include questions which will inform the public of key trends to expect going into Election Day."
Some guy with his chin between his fingers: "What's the dumbest 2028 horserace scenario imaginable?"
I emailed Patrick Healy, assistant managing editor for standards and trust at NYT, to ask why their story about a House report with new details of rape allegations against the President of the United States included neither those details, nor a single use of the word "rape."

Evidence "shows that Trump lied about kicking Epstein out of his Mar-a-Lago club," according to a new report from the House Judiciary Dem staff.
The report also reveals for the first time Beatrice Keul's account of allegedly having been raped by Trump.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."
Seeing how little coverage that house report that added another rape accusation to Trump's tally got today, I looked back on just the front page Benghazi stories (there were many, many more inside over these months).

What I said when this announced. Jeffrey Lurie is unquestionably the best owner in modern Philadelphia sports history, but having the team honor him tonight on national tv still feels weird.
On the one hand, Jeffrey Lurie not only is the greatest owner in Eagles history, but almost assuredly the best owner any Philadelphia sports team has ever had.
On the other: dude, you own the team. You have two Lombardi Trophies. You don't need to honor yourself at halftime of a MNF game.
The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.
Beyond disgusted by even more rape allegations against the President of the United States.
"In total, more than 25 different women...have independently accused Donald Trump of rape, sexual assault, or other sexual misconduct."

I dont know if it's because they love republicans and want them to win but holy crap is this an embarrassment. the equivalent of reckless disregard in terms of journalism fuck ups. Just the simplest damn googling.
There are only two explanations for the NYT's habit of presenting GOP operatives and donors as true swing voters:
1. Their reporters and editors are somehow incapable of running a simple Google searches, showing just a staggering level of journalistic incompetence
2. They want to the GOP to win
I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

It is both very unlikely Trump will personally succeed at establishing a full-blown dictatorship before he's gone, and also the case that Trump's tenure in American politics has massively increased the chance this country will have a full-blown dictatorship at some point in the next 30 or 40 years.
The powerful executives who cozied up to Trump didn't oops accidentally forget about pendulum swings. They either:
1) Like the fascism
2) Calculated it was here to stay, so going along was savvy
3) Saw no real downside, no consequences when the pendulum swung
Crucial to show them 3 was a mistake
Not great when a prominent BlueSky member with 261,000 followers tries to make a point with a post that is at best misinformation-adjacent.
Yes it’s foreseeable that Alito and/or Thomas could retire if the GOP keeps the Senate. No, they haven’t telegraphed their intentions via a leaked announcement
NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report.
Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.
There was a question, at the time, why the unrest of Minneapolis hadn't spread to the entire country
The answer may be "because Trump lost the Battle of Minneapolis, badly, and so there was no need"
I do think when historians look back the period the exact moment where it flipped and started going the other way won’t be anything any politician did but my Minneapolis neighbors weathering the worst of the regime in the streets, rallying together, fighting back, and winning
Is all this really feasible? Won't Trump refuse to sign anything like this? Won't he litigate it? Won't it lead to government shutdowns?
Yes, yes, and yes. But it's still absolutely doable and necessary. Here's why:

This is one good example of how appropriations hardball can work if you're willing to not blink first. Another: take your pick for demands and restrictions on funding Executive Office of the President. Yes, literally defund the White House. EOP is the central hub of the assault on the Constitution.

Over 2,000 alumni from Vivek’s all-boys catholic high school in Cincinnati have signed and circulated a petition demanding that he pull the ad and issue a public apology for “ignoring the moral responsibilities” of his Jesuit education. I think he’s pretty cooked.
AK's had more notice but CA is more worrying. Equally insane and delusional as litigation, but CA tells us something: It doesn't have any close races so it's not about flipping a seat or two. There's only one reason to target CA: it has enough House seats to cover the margin of any Dem majority.
“The Department of Justice is putting its formidable thumb on next week’s elections in a way that seems clearly intended to call into question the legitimacy of any result that is especially unfavorable to Republicans—before those results have even come in.”

I live in a downtown area of São Paulo so I see every march and every protest up close and they had more people on Avenida Paulista two weeks ago than I have ever seen. And then they did that again yesterday. *Right now,* spontaneously, just celebrating, there's a huge crowd.
Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

Baylor will pay Dave Aranda $12 million to not coach their football team. As per my usual standing offer, I would be willing to not coach Baylor’s football team for a small fraction of that amount.
I can simultaneously not coach Baylor, NC State , and Maryland.

NC State will be paying Dave Doeren almost $10 million to not coach their football team. As per my usual standing offer, I would be willing to not coach NC State’s football team for a small fraction of that amount. I’m a bargain!

If you had told me at any point in Lula's 1st or 2nd term not only that I would be rooting for him in the future ... but also that I'd be rooting for his *4th* term, when he's *80*, after multiple corruption convictions... and that I would think it was of *urgent global importance* for him to win...
So you go from the 1500s Italian game "mallet ball," or pallamaglio, to the French "pallemaille," to the English name "pall-mall," to an elongated area where you would play pall mall being called a "mall," to a walking area being called a mall, to an indoor shopping area being called a mall.
The most maddening part of this -- which is saying something -- is that the cop who has torn his town into shreds thinks the remaining residents are cool with him because they smile at him when he walks by. Mind-numbing levels of cope. www.propublica.org/article/depo...
Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.
Early this year, I visited Ingram, a TX town of ~1,900, to check out a tip.
The area was starting to recover from its worst flood in a century.
But as Latino workers drove to jobsites to help rebuild, the tipster said, a cop in a black Dodge Charger kept stopping them ... 🧵
It’s hard to imagine a more cruel and evil act than raping a child. There is no betrayal greater than the betrayal of a child by a parent. And then Ramaswamy compounded that betrayal by wielding that evil mother as a weapon against her own daughter.
The generality principle of the Rule of Law is its most essential concept. A class of people outside criminal law is incompatible with a law-based society.
