My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

I know absolutely nothing about Lula except that i saw someone share a clip on insta of him in celebration kissing a trans woman politician on the cheek and oh my god is that a radical act for a politician in 2026 so lets fucking go

Some more context: a black trans woman, congresswoman Erika Hilton, is a key reason why Brazil is reducing its working week from 6 days to 5; and she currently lives under 24-hour protection at a top secret address. english.elpais.com/internationa...

Incredible gender difference in voting intention in Brazil.

Not that you’d know from this whitewash, but this is a cheerful travel article encouraging readers to visit Palestinian territory in the West Bank that is illegally occupied by Israel, and all these tourism entrepreneurs and cafe owners are settlers who are living and working there illegally

#New on #OCIANA - 2000 years ago, a high-status woman named Gobb died. Over fifty people, including her father, came to a tall hill to build her a commemorative structure called a ṯiyyat and inscribe their love for her. Explore the site here: ociana.osu.edu/sites/990

They have no gods. They work magic, and think they are gods themselves. But they are not. And when they die, they become dust and bone, and their ghosts whine on the wind a little while till the wind blows them away. They do not have immortal souls.

This long Der Spiegel piece interviewing 10 IDF Gaza veterans does a remarkable job describing in detail from a first-person perspective the looseness of ROE, especially during the opening stages of the war, both for air strike cells and ground forces. But I don't see an English translation, so...

An outrage. Israeli forces in the West Bank have arrested the publisher and founding CEO of Profile Books, Andrew Franklin, along with a large group of international visitors supporting the olive harvest. They are currently detained and en route to an interrogation centre for possible deportation.

Friend of mine is currently on his 26th bout of Covid. Banging head like bad flu. Last time he had to have a toe amputated, suffered heart tremors and lost clarity of vision. He’s vaccinated up the wazoo & has been studied for years by baffled specialists. Reinfection is not a good idea. Wear a mask

Perhaps. I doubt it. My scenario is that it discredits the Greens as a credible challenge to Labour, and hence removes pressure from Labour to move left on Palestine. The only upside is that Miliband seems to be invested in sanctions on settlements regardless of political manoeuvring.

The policy adopted at conference has stimulated continued mainstream discussion about what form a post genocide Zionist state can take, where a weaker policy wouldn't have. The leadership need to continue/start explaining the policy (alongside their disagreements with it) rather than condemning it.

I would like women to have whatever colour hair they'd like. I would also like accurate data on: 50+ female unemployment rates; number of 65+ single women on/below poverty line; percentage of 50+ women unpaid carers; impact of austerity on all the above. And for that data to be headline news.

We’ve lived through the nearly complete systematic unwinding of the postwar public university, which for all its faults, was premised on the idea that not only aristocrats could be intellectuals, & that having non-aristocratic intellectuals was better for knowledge & therefore better for everyone

They are, as they were in 2024 1. Europe. Move towards the Sm and CU 2. Planning reform. Build those pylons. Dig those reservoirs. The energy generation and storage needs are acute, as is housing. 3. Tax reform. Why is nothing being done? Is it a treasury thing? Is it just too hard?

Peter Whitewood@pwhitewood.bsky.social

The Times supports the Russell Group idea of letting the ‘best’ universities charge more, a proposal for running institutions into the ground if they haven’t benefitted from accumulated prestige. And ‘best’ according to what? Teaching quality would produce a different list than assumed here.
