Trump 2.0 has been marked by an increasingly wide and obvious gulf between media elites and the general American public, which the elites themselves seem oddly confused about.

This week’s main story is about how more and more white nationalists, antisemites, and Nazi sympathizers seem to be integrating into the Republican Party, how some of them are currently running for office, and how old you can be for JD Vance to consider you “a very young boy.”

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Lina Khan on Mamdani: "One thing we saw the mayor be very attentive to is all sorts of daily nickel and diming -- taking on junk fees, subscription traps. Those can seem very micro and targeted, but in the aggregate I see those as really designed to take on unfair methods of competition."

One of my more mean-spirited post-2024 election ideas is that people **say** they want help and will vote for the party that helps them, but they don’t actually mean it. They hate getting help from Democrats. They **like** getting kicked in the teeth by Republicans.

The other thing about this is that in addition to the basic dishonesty, Jolene Riessen et al will always say shit like "I don't see Democrats doing me any favors" and then you'll look back and see stuff like "Joe Biden personally authorized the Free Money For Corn Farmers Initiative in 2022"

Why is that? I don’t know. My working theory is that it’s related to the gendering of our political parties, and is more or less the same phenomenon that in children we call “being a spoiled brat”

Meanwhile, one of the most harmful policy movements in America right now is a property tax revolt that is shifting us away from our most economically efficient tax, all so property owners can have a little more in their pockets next month.

Ethics aside, this take could use some contact with reality. Biden's expanded CTC didn't motivate recipients to vote to maintain it. Trump offered $5000 checks and it hurt him in the polls. The empirical claim that welfare creates single issue voters just doesn't hold up.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

Personal tip: if you, like me, find certain kinds of happiness impossible to achieve in the current moment, see if there’s a song you can find that makes you want to dance.

I really need to point out that the last point is essential. They want you miserable. Being happy is THE ONLY WAY you'll be able to do the rest. Also, being happy does not mean to not be angry. Be happy AND angry

one of the really useful takeaways from fukuyama's political order books is a clear conceptual understanding of what corruption *is* in its fundamental nature. and the answer... is patronage networks organized on personal connections! corruption is *inherent* in these discretionary systems!

looked at in longer perspective, it's striking how much this resembles the premodern system of exclusion, rents, and personalist connections, which was--and this part's important--radically worse than the modern system of impersonal rules and general taxation

Boston’s chief planner is a true believer in the San Francisco model, in which you make it impossible to profitably build apartments by-right so developers are forced into a politicized discretionary negotiation with the city, which relaxes the rules in exchange for below-market units.

It was about 20 years ago when I learned about PGPR because we were cleaning up after a Halloween party and noticed an astonishing number of chocolates that were half-eaten.

Nobody had said to us the previous night “hey, what’s wrong with the chocolate?” Maybe they didn’t even consciously notice a change or a problem. But they had clearly been less interested in eating it: the evidence was unmistakable.

Putting Chekov in perspective, imagine if Star Trek: Enterprise, which premiered right after 9/11, had introduced a Muslim officer in its second season. Typical with Trek of this era, Enterprise would address 9/11 only through metaphor.

Stephen Robinson@playtyperguy.com

In Star Trek, Chekov represented a future where the U.S. & Russia were allies (though the TOS Earth was clearly not one government, as Kirk would often mock Chekov's biased Russian history). In TNG, Worf represents a future where the Federation & Klingons are allies. It's less overtly political.

I think the lesson from Lula is not never talk about the opposition; it's articulate a positive vision that's basically, We Can Just Do Things. That's why Mamdani-ism is so popular - voters have an intrinsic sense that their electeds have agency they're not using

I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

She’s obviously old and not very attractive, she looks kind of raggedy and toothless, and her voice is harsh and sharp while she’s saying mean things about her daughter. Her whole presentation is strongly reminiscent of Momma in “Throw Momma From the Train.”

I think if you’re going to use a woman to activate misogyny against another woman, you need to have the activator be a woman who is pleasing to the misogynist gaze: young and attractive or warm and motherly. Not a mean and slightly pathetic old lady.

Not only does the magical “prices go down and jobs go up” button not exist, but if it did, Trump wouldn’t push it when he can push the “money goes to me personally” button instead.

I also think there’s a reason that the ads with Amy Acton’s mother aren’t hitting the way they wanted, and it’s a reason that I haven’t really seen anybody talk about: her mother comes across as a viscerally unpleasant person.

That strikes me as an accurate assessment. If you’re selling the fantasy that Trump has a big red “make prices go down and jobs go up” button that he can push, you can really only sell that AS a fantasy, it collapses as soon as the reality sets in.

Everyone should read these threads I did about industry lobbyists and the EPA and understand them. Take the time to see the unambiguous evidence of what's happening now at this moment inside the EPA. Please retweet them. Please read them. Each one of the threads. It's happening in slow motion.

Closely related to my observation that whenever a commercial tries to show AI being useful in an everyday end-user way, they end up showing how you can use it to do something like “find a canvas tote bag.”
