where....were the ads run

Matt Burgess (WIRED)@mattburgess1.bsky.social

NEW: The San Francisco City Attorney has hit Meta with a cease-and-desist telling it to stop publishing ads with AI-generated child sexual abuse. The letter asks Meta why the same ads keep running. Meta says the ads didn’t run in San Francisco and they are outside the city attorney's jurisdiction

Toronto is putting on a “Kids Vote Weekend” in October, where kids will go to polling locations and vote for one of five candidates running to be Tree of the Year. I will be cancelling all my coverage of the mayoral race and focusing exclusively on this contest. www.toronto.ca/city-governm...

Apple and Google aren’t really your problem here. Neither are the civil servants at the USGS who maintain the GNIS. Use Mapquest if it makes you feel better, I guess. The problem is the country reelected this vicious, spiteful, corrupt old fool.

The last time the Americans tried to claim Lake Ontario in 1813, we intentionally lured them into Fort York and then blew up our entire gunpowder magazine to kill as many Americans as possible. A foundation part of Toronto history is "blowing our own fort to smithereens rather than being American"

Trump allies himself w/Kim Jong Un against South Korea: “Based on my very good relationship w/Kim Jong Un, I am not happy that the US has agreed to Joint Military Exercises…I recently asked the President of SK if they would like to join us in the Denuclearization of Iran, & they said, ‘No thanks!’”

It's me, a Telegraph columnist, taking a break screaming bloody murder about fairness in the women's sports I wouldn't be caught dead watching to wax lyrical about academic integrity in sociology, a field I consider to be fake, at institutions I consider to be communist indoctrination centers.

Eventually I am going to post triumphant pictures of Yuzi and I's wedding, but meanwhile I think we look cute in this. A bbq where my family and her family hung out together, and my dad had hung up flags for all the countries represented there which I thought was nice.

🌟Recommending a sensationally great tv (Netflix) limited series from Korea called Notes From the Last Row. Adapted from a Spanish play, it’s a fascinating story, brilliantly told. The entire company of actors are phenomenal. (Choi Min-sik OMG he’s genius!) Brilliant work from all departments.🌟

Sorry that your Mad King keeps threatening to invade my country, I also find this all terribly distressing but between the two of us you're the US Senator with actual powers of office.

Canada's boycott of California wine is causing devastating harm to winegrowers. I'm urging the Canadian government to recognize that California doesn’t agree with these tariff wars, to lift these restrictions, and increase consumer options to strengthen both our economies.

there is a cohort of men who resent the responsibilities and obligations of adulthood — of the fact that you owe things to other people. it is a fundamentally childish impulse that they have reconfigured as the height of masculinity, and i think it informs the parasocial attraction to platner.

Sort of spurred by this: I still think that part of the whole Post Pandemic Social Settlement should have been a huge (inter)national effort to properly ventilate our spaces and that should have included ACs and heat pumps for places in Europe, and it's just a shame we generally didn't do this.

"Digitally handmade" is a useful, vital distinction. Collage work of existing images, authored in an image-editing platform (and done within the bounds of fair use) is the actual remix culture. Typing "make me an image in the style of this creator" into a generator trained on unlicensed art is theft

Sharon O'Dea@sharonodea.com

I see the AI Art Is Theft bores are out again. Remixing, referencing, riffing, recombining, that's the entire history of the internet. And of culture, full stop. Clay Shirky documented it exhaustively in Here Comes Everybody. Every meme, fanfic, and parody account operates on exactly this logic ffs.

Uninterested in leading a pile-on but no, AI does not “have access” to everything ever published. Not archival material, obviously, but not secondary material either. Nor across times nor languages. AI is not human knowledge personified. It’s exactly not that, in fact. It’s not even a search engine.

The best stock photo sources these days are very specific people who take photos of very specific things. This guy takes pictures of trains. All trains all the time. Only trains. Do I have to worry that one of these photos is AI? Nope. He would never disrespect a real train in that way.

Google search was once so good and so successful that the products of companies which tried to ape it, such as Microsoft's Bing, became instant punchlines. Do you know how rare that is? Do you know how many companies would KILL for that sort of dominance? Yet Google is pissing it away. Unreal.

Personality cults are just so cringe if you are not in them. That is, I guess, genuinely a functional aspect of them - it makes it harder to leave once you are in, since it's legitimately embarrassing to have been taken in by this sort of tacky kitsch.
