Thank you to @mayor.seattle.gov for letting Lake Washington Boulevard better serve the community this summer. The boulevard is most accessible when it is closed to car through-traffic, and OPEN to people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to enjoy as the 3 mile public waterfront PARK it is

Cars have a geometry problem. They’re incredibly spatially inefficient.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars. Even if those cars are electric. And then there’s all the parking. OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money, emissions, pollution, noise etc. Choices. Simple.

riding bikes is also vastly more pro social than driving a car. you pay so much more attention to the world around you and are so much better enmeshed in your community.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

Riding bikes is 10X more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities. And that’s just the climate emissions. Doesn’t include the massive public & personal cost difference, the air & noise pollution difference, the massive space difference, etc, etc…Via @theconversation.bsky.social

A few years ago, I calculated the heat emitted by cars in New York City as patio heaters, to give people an idea of scale in a measure they could understand. Every day there are 157,000 patio heater equivalents running around New York. Turn them off! www.treehugger.com/cars-add-hea...

treehugger.comCars Add a Lot of Heat to Our Cities—It's Time to Ban ThemLearn how cars are worsening the heat wave and why it's time to reassess their place in cities.
How-Sen Chong@how-sen.com

Cars are one of the reasons why cities get so much hotter. An average gasoline car can produce 3.9 MJ of waste heat for *every kilometre* it drives. That’s enough to raise the temperature of a 665 sqft apartment twenty degrees centigrade.

Great effort by the councils active travel department and Everybody Cycles, organising this event to improve accessibility to everyone regardless of ability to get active and get cycling!

For millennia, humans have been using decoys to lure birds to particular places, usually to eat them. But decoys can also be used for conservation: Artists & scientists are creating realistic fake birds to attract puffins, terns, and other seabirds to restored nesting sites. @biographic.bsky.social🧪

Cycling to work reduces risk of death by up to 20%. Copenhagen gives cyclists tax incentives to commute because their productivity is higher (less days off sick). This stuff should not be controversial. Politicians really need to step up on active travel #cycling

Son conseil : " le but n'est pas de remplacer 1 million de véhicules thermiques par : - 1 million de véhicules électriques mais par: - 250000 véhicules électriques. =MOINS DE VOITURES qui conduisent MOINS"

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

As I put it a few years ago in my blunt advice to Irish cities, “Your goal SHOULDN’T be to replace a million fossil fuel vehicles with a million electric vehicles. It should be to replace a million fossil fuel vehicles with 250,000 electric vehicles. The main answer MUST be FEWER cars driven LESS."

“In 2025 — yes, after the games — Parisians approved another referendum to pedestrianize and plant 500 additional streets, removing another 10% of Paris's on-street parking; about more 10K spots…no one calls these car-free streets, rather, they're rues-jardin— literally, garden streets.” #UrbanTruth

The Mayor's Office just confirmed with me that the plan is for Bicycle Weekend closures to start around 7pm Friday night and extend through Monday morning. The days of one sunset ride along an open Lake Washington Boulevard per weekend look to be in the past.

Ryan Packer@typewriteralley.bsky.social

This is huge: Katie Wilson's office just announced a significantly expanded schedule for Bicycle Weekends on Lake Washington Boulevard, after years of the program being stifled under Bruce Harrell. In addition to more weekends, we're getting our long holiday weekends back.
