When they tell us "there is no alternative," what they mean is "stop trying to think of alternatives." To imagine radically is to move beyond the helplessness of prediction: a radical imagination dares to insist that history is what we make, not what happens to us.

This is what I need denialists to understand: the AI evangelists' wildest fever dreams (sentience, the singularity, whatever-the-fuck) don't need to be real for the tech to be hugely consequential. A machine gun doesn't need to be superintelligent.

Here's a small thing you can do for the future: 🌐 Find a webpage you care about. 💾 Save it. ✔️ That's it. One saved page becomes part of the web's shared memory. Try it today 👉 web.archive.org #ToolsYouCanUse

I recently built a custom @kiwixoffline.bsky.social hotspot using a Raspberry Pi 5 and a 3d-printed case. When powered on, it creates its own WiFi network that ~12 devices can connect to simultaneously, to freely browse offline copies of Wikipedia, Project Gutenberg, iFixit guides, and much more.

Full list of what it serves: all TED videos, iFixit, Khan Academy, MDWiki, Project Gutenberg, Ready.gov (in English and Spanish), Stack Overflow, Wikipedia, and Survivor Library. Here’s a look at the interface on mobile:

Additionally, and one of the coolest things (at least I think), is that it is somewhat self-replicating. It also serves up Kiwix mobile and desktop apps that can be downloaded so all of the content can be downloaded and taken on-the-go as well. #freeinformation
