I do not think we should have a death penalty. I don't think it is any kind of deterrent. I think it's barbaric. I think it makes us all worse people. All of us. And we just don't have to do this to ourselves. We could abolish it, and we should.

I just saw someone admonishing someone trans to shut up about trans rights because there are concentration camps in the US, and you know who I see overwhelmingly and disproportionately on the front lines standing up against concentration camps? Trans people.

Book bans have already changed the conversation. Now some leaders are questioning whether libraries themselves deserve public funding. We explored this troubling shift & why defending the freedom to read means defending the libraries that make it possible www.freedomtoreadproject.org/beyond_book_...

freedomtoreadproject.orgBeyond Book Bans: When the Target Becomes the Library ItselfBook challenges are increasingly evolving into challenges against libraries themselves, threatening funding, services, and communities' access to knowledge and opportunity.

This is how I feel whenever other librarians say they use AI to generate book recs. Why would I outsource the fun part of my job to a plagiarism machine that’s going to make stuff up? #BlockGenAI #LibrariansAgainstAI

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

Can you imagine never having the fun parts of your job and instead you have to spend all your time making sure that the AI doesn't switch up people's jobs or motivations on you? (They don't do that part, by the way. That's a thing they don't do.)

People of color > me on this so if they correct me, listen, but Say Her Name is reserved for Black, Brown, and Indigenous women BECAUSE they suffer state violence but will never be remembered the way Renee will. Renee died horribly. Her whiteness will guarantee a legacy women of color DO NOT GET.

The financial instability of The NewsHour is a civic crisis. PBS’s flagship nightly news broadcast can’t fund a weekend broadcast or keep its last bureau — Phoenix — open.

PBS News notes this Sunday will be “PBS News Weekend’s” last due to federal budget cuts

Reading Ari Baran’s Delay of Game and they’re just bros! Who just really want to win a cup for their best buddy! And also maybe suck each other’s dicks for good luck! And just like. Keep it bros and not be weird! These oblivious sweet traumatized chuckleheads are making my heart hurt.

And just in a practical sense, don’t discount the mental health benefits of Doing Something. Just—and please listen to Grandma Liz here, who has been Doing Activism for a very long time—let go of the expectation of seeing results. This fight is endless. There are gains and losses. But it still helps

My attitude on this is that I'm not calling them because I think I can change their minds. I'm calling them because it is unthinkable to let them do this without hearing how evil and awful they are. My spite powers me. If I can get just 500 people a day to join me, we could fuck up their day.

this is such an important thing to recognize and call out the fascism is mostly done being nice at this point, but it got here through well dressed men politely asking questions while the rest of us were scolded for pointing out where those questions led

The sleight of hand is getting people to agree that there are kinds of people who should be punished, surveilled, treated as lying or incompetent until they prove otherwise.

Anna Holmes@annabookwriter.bsky.social

I’m not talking about the people who enjoy punching down. Obviously that comes from somewhere darker. I’m just saying that if you haven’t noticed ever dared say “no one is free until we are all free” and didn’t quite mean all in your heart of hearts— You’re helping the darkness.

Statements like this? Are why minorities don't trust White people politics. Because it communicates that if the switch-up is juuuust right, you'll trade our interests for whatever you think is worth more. After all, "there are no permanent friends and no permanent enemies, only permanent interests."

Max Berger@maxberger.bsky.social

Politics is not fan culture—none of these people are your friends. There are no permanent friends and no permanent enemies, only permanent interests. We can be grateful that MTG is against Trump without liking her or thinking of her as a long-term ally. The anti-Trump coalition must be huge.

It. Doesn't. Actually. Understand. A. Single. Word. Of. What. It. Is. Fed. It just chops up sentences and calculates how often words follow each other. That's it. Nothing more. It can't summarize material for you because it doesn't understand that material.

Ian Bicking@ianbicking.org

What about this is controversial? Beginning an inquiry by using AI to survey material is a very normal and appropriate use.

I really do not care if the guy who has raped kids is from my political party. My moral philosophy is that you don't rape kids, and there is nothing you can do that earns you a get-out-of-raping-kids-free card.

The thing that really gets me is back in 2014 I think bigots in NC tried to pass a bathroom ban & it blew up in their faces & when these same people came back with "fairness in sports" too many people took them seriously when it was an obvious change in tactics!

Thank you to everyone who called today. I know calling feels useless sometimes. But without these calls, even more Ds might have folded and the future would become even worse. This isn't the only way we fight, but these calls still matter.

This is just five minutes. Please watch this and share it with anyone you think might be moved by it. And then call your US rep and tell them to vote AGAINST all of the anti-trans bills Republicans are pushing this week. Find your rep at reps.fyi

I'm not sure I've ever seen anything with a larger disconnect between the executive class and the general public than AI - there have been cases where executives want to push something they know is unpopular, but on AI it's like the backlash hasn't penetrated their bubble at all
