A wee heads-up that @sarahlaurenson.bsky.social & I are organising a symposium on the cultural and material history of peatlands, 18 Nov at the NMS. There are still a few places available so tell your peat pals: my.nms.ac.uk/25176/25177

!!! I am a big big fan of @historyworkshop.org.uk so it's a real honour to have them publish this piece on radical history, print culture and walking. With many thanks to brilliant editor @sophie-turbutt.bsky.social and @btwhite.bsky.social for the encouragement 📚
'My favourite thing about these books is the way writers, publishers and events reappear across time.' @kamackinnon reflects on the Glaswegian radical print she has collected, and her experiences sharing it with the public on historical walking tours (@radicalglasgowtour).
Reminded of this when the Guardian's France correspondent manages to oddly make what's happening in France all about how lovely things are in the UK by comparison www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

There is no official number of injured in Toulouse, and info is trickling through the politicised shit bit by bit. Here, a British pensioner visiting Toulouse had part of her calf blown off and plastic shrapnel from the grenades lodged in her knee. Was taken car of by street medic and restauranteur

The new militarism, and its accompanying discourse of national virility, is capable of taking us to a very dark place indeed.
Interviewing a govt minister Hazarika shows a graph comparing young people claiming PIP to the size of our armed forces & declares it "tells a story about modern Britain" I can't even make a sarcastic comment about our fearless fourth estate, because Hazarika is a Labour politician
For those outside the UK: The interviewer on the left is a member of the upper legislature, the House of Lords, to which she was appointed, for life, by the last Labour Prime Minister. The interviewee on the right is a member of the House of Commons, and a Labour Government minister.

The government had been promising images of urban warfare, and nothing delivers better than riling up everyone. And I mean EVERYONE. There's not one segment of toulousan population that wasn't swearing at the police yesterday. Remember this is rugby town, and the other party wasn't playing fair.

So what happened at the landing point? The people holding the Union banner (CGT-FSU) were targeted by grenades. And are now recovering in the hospital. This is not how you garantee the freedom to peaceful assembly nor free speech. www.ici.fr/occitanie/ha...

the march was arriving at it's final destination Saint Cyprien, and riot police started charging and gassing the head of the march. The unions. In effect creating a humungous trap. People stuck on the bridge (pont des Catalans) that was packed. Here, supposed to be heading to the right (gas clouds)

Everything is gender as you can see by this graph we are spending more on effete social care than masculine warmongering, as such the tale of modern britain is that we’re girly and gay what do you say minister???

This is what the Labour Party is. Yesterday I burst out crying when someone said the scary thing is that Reform might get in. Some of us are already living under fascism. Some others of us don’t care enough to have noticed.
It’s helpful to have an actual Labour MP saying right out that it’s not what transgender people do or say that is the problem: it’s their presence that she objects to, their existence. Yes, this is what it always was, and these people just keep winding each other up and up to ever more extreme views

one last call...
Looking for a charity or agency in Southwark / Lambeth that can pass on good quality white goods (specifically a 2 year old electric cooker) to those in need. Several charities provide grants or loans to help people purchase, but does anyone take 2nd hand cookers? The answer may be "no"...
