I can see one immediate potential issue there

Parents tell older siblings this because they need the reassurance. All youngest children (especially those of us born after long age gaps) know that parents continue having children until they have the good one.

this is absolute nonsense and I'm severely judging anyone who actually believes a production car could do this.

I dont actually think it'll play out this way. call me an optimist- and I am ready to be sadly wrong in four weeks - but I think the midterms are going to be such a bloodbath that the maga coalition disintegrates and there's an opportunity for a candidate willing to say "burn all this to the ground"

it still sounds silly but all it will take is federal troops sent into say illinois and pritzker saying - as he's hinted at already - that state troops and police will get an order that ICE etc are breaking state law and action is ordered. then someone on either side gets an itchy trigger finger

that's how it happens. goons in masks dressed like terrorists raid on the streets, only takes one order to say, rightly, that the state law needs to be enforced. state troopers are told, by someone with fuckin balls, to step in to an ice raid. someone shoots first. that's civil war. it's that easy

tldr is: ossoff front runner now but it's another ten or eleven months before shit actually starts to gear up. unless the midterms start an actual civil war in which case we're talking about who's the president of Independent Cascadia when they get invaded by the New Mexico Southwest Alliance

Not in the running: newsom [looks like a snake, bad vibes] shapiro [boring] beshear [I mean. maybe. lot to prove before he can make the big leagues] buttigieg [personally I like him but he wants it too much] harris [there's no way this flies and they know it and it's not happening]

wildcard: chris murphy [honestly could come out of nowhere if he doubles down on the "these people need to go to jail" but I personally dont think he has the juice

ugh I'm gonna have to write the 28 sweepstakes piece. I'll do it after the midterms but for me right now it's: Ossoff [handsome, normcore, angry] AOC [angry, colossal fame, prob actually going for the NY senate seat] pritzker [angry, standup comedian funny, hard as nails when chips go down]

nicky woolf reposted

Ossoff is one of the very few people adequately channeling Evelyn Normielib these days the base doesn't want to hear entreaties to our better natures, they don't want to go high while the other side goes low, they want someone to come on the TV and go "these people are garbage" he's good at it

Bill McKibben@billmckibben.bsky.social

Figuring out why Ossoff is so effective is an interesting task. I think he's mastering a kind of stern dignity that is uniquely compelling in contrast to the clownish cruelty of the other side. I think the other person who's kind of hit on the same thing is AOC, though in a different register

Is there a work of art that was created well before the current era that you feel explains Trump and MAGA and everything better than anything contemporary? For me it’s Assassins (1990) but I’m curious if other people have one.

Ossoff and El-Sayed took different tacks tonight vs their opponents—El-Sayed was more of a subtext of “you dumb fucking racist jackass” while Ossoff’s was more “if you fell down at a gas station I’d toss a lit match on you”—and I don’t think either of those is a bad choice tbh

My takeaway from Trump's remarks was not that he was "inviting" Iran to nuke LA, which I genuinely don't think he was, and they can't do anyway. It was that we shouldn't have a president who is so mentally fried that we have to talk about whether he actually invited Iran to nuke LA or not.
