The most immediate "Hey, if you liked BioWare games, then you'll dig this..." is the RPG project I've been on since this summer, Hunter: The Reckoning -- Deathwish. Its biggest influence is obviously Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, but BioWare hallmarks are there too. teyon.com/games/hunter...

for those of you who don't know the Shopping Mall lore my first RPG was Heroes Unlimited (1E) and the group that introduced me played the intro scenario which is a nice standard "supervillains are threatening the shopping mall and the A-List heroes are unavailable, HELP". It's fine. Decent intro.

I would do that “your first TTRPGs prompt that is going around but all it’s going to do is remind me again that I can never escape the shopping mall no matter how far I go

My first five TRPGs in a rough order I played them, maybe: 1. Lord of the Rings Adventure Game 2. Middle-earth Roleplaying 3. Paranoia 2e 4. Wonderania (my first design at the ripe age of maybe 12) 5. AD&D 2e

My first five ttrpgs in the order I played them: 1. Dungeons & Dragons (blue monochrome box) 2. Basic D&D 3. Sky Realms of Jorune 4. Tunnels & Trolls 5. En Garde! D&D was the big one where we lived in Northern Alberta; most easily available in 1980 when I started. But I got to try others as well.

It is also entirely possible that this list is actually wrong, and Twilight: 2000, RuneQuest 3e, Shadowrun 2e, and maybe some other games belong on the list. It was a long time ago and we had a pretty good public library.

Heidi Wong's Halloween costume (instagram) is as the Shimmer from the Annihilation movie, with a purse using my novel. Really clever, looks good affixed to the purse.

Palantir cofounder is afraid of cooties.

“Palantir cofounder and CEO Alex Karp states ‘AI will undermine the influence of highly educated, often female voters and give it to working class men. We have feminine energy running our cities and our courts,’ he complained.”

This might sound kinda weird, but in feeling sad about BioWare and wanting to avoid EA, I do recommend playing the Baldur's Gate remasters. They're made by Beamdog, so EA doesn't get a dime of it, and you get to appreciate the games that put BioWare on the map.

The intro round at the first lesson of any doctoral school course is always fun. It's like 20 people who tell about their serious work in healthcare or with abuse victims or climate change or something involving tensile strengths and then there's me going "o hai I study fantasy RPGs and vampires".

Criminally under rated film

Movie recommendation for tonight, Underwater Kristen Stewart stars in this sci-fi/horror set in an underwater mining facility, and that's all I'm going to say about it because I just watched this one night without knowing a thing about it, which was definitely the ideal viewing circumstance!

The game dwarf fortress isn’t for everyone, it’s likely the most complex management game ever created. I love it, so I jumped at the chance to work with mightymerch.store to make a 20th anniversary map poster. This one was super fun to draw. #map #cartography #dwarffortress #graphicdesign #games

I'm trying to remember a tv show or a movie I saw in the 90s. I only remember one scene but it's stuck with me... It's a historical story, set during the Christianization of Scandinavia. One character is a monk or a bishop sent to convert the heathens. He gets advice from a Norse person. 👇🏼

While some purists restrict the "OSR" label to games emulating OD&D and/or Mentzer Basic, others consider anything from the hobby's first decade fair game; thus, having first been published only six years after OD&D, under the broader definition you could technically write an OSR game based on this:

“How did you get into TTRPGs?” I no longer even remember. I have always been here.

“How did you get into TTRPGs?” It was the activity my CX friends, art friends, & musical theatre kid friends* could agree on. (We don’t talk enough about the high school Debate Club to TTRPG pipeline) *guess which one I was. you’ll probably be wrong.

We had this talk sometime in the beginning of the year so I'm frankly a little hazy on the specifics by now, but I do remember it was a good time. It's always a good time talking to Cam. Anyway, RPGs are the fuckin' best and I love talking about them.

This post is unavailable.

I mean, I'm not on Instagram because of a deep loathing for short-form video content, but I am glad to discover this has also protected me from cooties.

Given Wizards' abandonment of D&D fiction, it's great to see Hachette Partworks bringing back 100 classic D&D novels—even better, all in a gorgeous HARDCOVER format. If they were more easily available in the US, I suspect I'd be looking for shelving to fit 100 books. 🧵1

1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it). But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that
